Chapter 535: Enhancing the Bloodfiend Artifact Using the Aether Concepts
Aksai studied the spell more carefully, intrigued by its ability to build up gradually without the target noticing right away.
It was subtle and dangerous—the kind of spell that could cripple an enemy mid-fight or leave them vulnerable during cultivation.
These Spirit spells were especially useful for the fiends who had infiltrated the Iron Mountain Sect. They could use them to lay traps with devastating precision.
Aksai made another mental note, saving it alongside the Blood Echo Curse.
He leaned his head a little further into Yelia’s lap, letting out a soft sigh.
Yelia brushed a leaf out of his hair, watching his face with a gentle smile. “Found something interesting?”
“Oh, plenty,” Aksai replied without opening his eyes. “This manual is full of cruel little tricks. The Bloodfiend manuals I got earlier also had some useful techniques I could perform alone.
But this one’s special—it lets me use my puppets to do the “dirty work” while I stay far away from the conflict.”
He chuckled.
“These Spirit spells weren’t meant to fight fair. They were designed to make people suffer before they died. Of course, they weren’t intended to be used through puppets—but I can fix that using techniques from the Heretic Dao.”
With a flick of his fingers, he then summoned a lantern-shaped artifact from his storage ring. It floated quietly above his chest, glowing faintly with a pulsing, cold light. The metal was dark and smooth, with faint red lines running through it like veins.
Tiny runes were etched across its surface, so small that a normal eye would miss them.
Aksai sent out a thread of his Spirit Sense and activated his Neural Link Fabric. The artifact was scanned in seconds, and a spectral screen appeared in his mental space. Strings of glowing symbols and flowing runic data began filling the space, like watching a command prompt unravel a locked program line by line.
“Hmm,” Aksai muttered quietly. “This artifact is not so different from the one I received from the Lakir Clan elder. But this one’s a bit more advanced…”
The Neural Link Fabric cross-checked the artifact’s internal structure with its existing database. Several match points popped up with a low chime. Aksai focused on the highlighted portions.
“The advanced runes make it work on late-stage Foundation Building Experts,” he murmured. “Definitely more dangerous.”
The analysis deepened. Lines of runes hovered in mid-air, flickering as the system decrypted them one by one. Several of them pulsed in red, marked as amplification-type runes. Aksai’s brow twitched slightly.
“I see… so some amplification-type Essence Equation Runes have been used to boost the artifact’s soul impact,” he said.
A fresh set of data appeared. Aksai watched as the screen displayed a 3D blueprint of the internal structure of the lantern. At the center was a core channel, shaped like a twisting spiral—where soul pressure was amplified before release.
He gulped lightly.
“Damn. Luckily, I had a stronger soul at the time,” he muttered. “If I hadn’t… I would have been severely injured. Or worse.”
He opened his eyes slowly and looked up at the violet sky above. His voice dropped to a thoughtful tone.
“Like always, I shouldn’t take any Foundation Building Expert lightly. No wonder that assassin lady looked so shocked. She never expected me to resist the artifact’s effects and use that moment to strike.”
His voice faded for a moment as the memory played in his mind. That fleeting expression of fear on her face right before everything ended.
He let out a long breath and closed his eyes again, the artifact still hovering above him. With another mental command, he instructed the Neural Link Fabric.
“Fully decrypt the Essence Equation Runes,” he said quietly. “I want to understand this thing inside out. Modify it. Replicate it. And prepare it for puppet integration.”
Another panel appeared in his mind. A new task queue began to form as he added another layer of instruction.
“Also… cross-analyze this artifact with Aether cultivation concepts from Acarnis. I want to enhance its functions even further. Let it run on Aether Crystals instead of Spirit essence. If successful, we can mount these on the puppets and set a proper trap.”
The screen blinked in confirmation. Tasks accepted. The decryption and modification process began.
Aksai gave a small nod to himself, satisfied.
Yelia didn’t say anything, but the corners of her lips twitched with quiet amusement.
Aksai let the glowing script fade from his vision and allowed his body to fully relax again.
Soon, he’d start testing these new Spirit spells.
But for now, he had grapes, peace, and a farm full of growling demon bears training their claws off.
All was right in his little world of twilight.
***
After a few hours.
Aksai let out a quiet groan and stretched his arms out to both sides. His legs stretched too, cracking slightly at the joints. He rubbed his eyes slowly, blinking as the soft light of the twilight hit his face.
When he looked around, he realized something.
“Yelia?” he mumbled, noticing that her presence beside him was gone.
He pushed himself up with a lazy motion and sat at the edge of the platform. His eyes scanned the area slowly until they landed on a familiar figure not far from him.
Yelia was tending to one of the Spirit trees near the back edge of the farm. The tree had glowing green leaves and strange, twisting bark. Yelia stood in front of it with both hands raised.
Pale green vines flowed from her arms like mist, gently wrapping around the branches. She whispered something softly as she cast her wood-element Spirit spells with care.
Aksai smiled quietly as he watched her from a distance. Then he looked down from the platform and saw the woodland demon bears.
All of them had collapsed in a heap under the platform, snoring lightly or twitching in their sleep. A few had collapsed mid-stretch, while others still had their fists clenched as if they were dreaming about continuing their martial training.
Aksai raised a brow, tempted to shout at them.
But then he chuckled to himself.
“Let them sleep,” he muttered under his breath. “They’ve earned it.”
Just then, the sharp cry of an eagle echoed through the air, cutting across the peaceful sounds of the enchanted farm. It came from the far side of the Spirit fields, beyond a line of tall mana-infused trees near the boundary.
Aksai’s ears twitched, and he turned his head toward the sound. The cry rang out again—louder this time.
He stood up, brushing off some dust from his robe and gave one last glance at the sleeping demon bears below.
“I wonder if these fat bears will be able to ride other flying-type demon beats some day.”
With slow, relaxed steps, he started walking toward the source of the eagle’s call.
He followed the sound until he reached the far side of the farm. There, in a clearing surrounded by sturdy Spirit trees, he found the source.
Two enormous Bluewind Eagles stood facing each other.
Each one was as large as a small house, their bodies covered in blue, silver, and white feathers that shimmered slightly under the eternal twilight sky.
Their wings were half spread, intense aura and wind-element blades surrounded them, stirred up by their strong Spirit essence.
The male Bluewind Eagle stood tall with his head lowered slightly. He looked awkward, unsure of himself. He let out a soft, pleading cry and took a careful step forward.
But the female Bluewind Eagle had no interest in him.
Her wings were fully spread in a warning display. One of her legs was chained to a nearby tree by a glowing Essence Equation rune carved onto a heavy band of silver metal. Her other leg was raised, sharp talons glinting in the light, ready to strike if the male came too close.
She let out another loud screech—a sound so shrill and fierce it almost seemed to cut through the air. The male winced and backed off, clearly startled. He tried again, raising his head and calling out with a deep, windy cry that shook the branches above.
But once more, the female’s response was louder and angrier.
Aksai raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. He stood there watching the scene with a half-smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
“…This is not going as planned,” he muttered.
The male eagle turned his head and noticed Aksai. His bright golden eyes showed a hint of relief as if asking for help.
This male was Aksai’s eagle—gifted to him by Haitin Blackblood during the start of his Duya Forest expedition. It had been a useful companion and mount.
After the trip, Aksai had returned with an Aether Beast from the Duya Forest. But he had not forgotten about his Bluewind Eagle.
And so, on a whim during his return journey through the Wild Devil Lands, he had met Haitin again and asked him for a female eagle so he could raise a family of them on his farm.
Haitin had agreed easily, though he had given a short warning.
“Pairing Bluewind Eagles isn’t going to be easy, brother in law. They’re stubborn and proud.”
At the time, Aksai had brushed it off.
But now, standing here and watching the female eagle scream in rage at her awkward admirer, he had to admit—Haitin hadn’t been wrong.
Ancient Romans used crushed bugs as lipstick.
