Chapter 314: Slaves – 3
So it was indeed as Uraan said… only intelligent beings can be enslaved, Leo thought as he pondered the words spoken by the white-robed priest sitting in front of him, who wore a pleasant smile.
Every official priest was assigned a large, spacious room of their own, with apprentice priests handling the menial chores—bringing in the desired slaves for customers or taking them on tours through the holding areas if they weren’t sure what type they wanted.
As Uraan had said, the priest wasn’t entertaining any questions before Leo threw in some AC. Though he could simply reveal his student rank and make the man spit things out, Leo didn’t want any unnecessary attention.
“But I have killed some considerably ranked wild beasts like goblins and orcs, and they looked stronger than the ones here. So why can’t they be enslaved?” Leo asked.
The priest pondered for a moment, fingers lightly tapping the table, then spoke.
“Beasts like goblins, orcs, ogres, etc can be said to be of two types. One would be the wild ones that you might have come across and killed, and the other are members of a particular tribe that teaches them the way of the world through the gathered knowledge of previous generations. These tribes are tightly knit large families that are formed through wild beasts,”
He continued.
“If a certain beast manages to gain intelligence and decides to form a family and impart knowledge to his family members, those members also become intelligent through that first intelligent individual’s teachings. And just so you know, when a beast attains intelligence, their gene evolves, and their offspring also start having that evolved gene that makes them easier to learn things.”
…
While the priest explained things, Leo raised a brow.
Genes? Such high-level words…
…
“Just like that, generation after generation, a proper intelligent tribe is formed. And if part of their world fuses with human territory, we enslave them. Primarily because they are dangerous to common people, and secondly, for a cheap, strong workforce.”
Leo nodded slowly. Though he still had some questions, he decided to save them for later and asked something more important.
“What if a strong individual gets angry at humans for enslaving their kind?”
The priest seemed genuinely amazed that a student—likely a first year—would ask such a question when most like him would be drooling to get their hands on female slaves.
He shook his head.
“We are not allowed to access core information regarding that, nor are we supposed to talk about it. But I am pretty sure some big shot might know things about it.”
The priest then leaned forward slightly in his chair, and Leo did the same as the priest lowered his voice to a whisper.
“What I can tell you is that something very fishy is going around that I’m not sure of. Just know that no strong individuals of any race would take action unless it’s something personal.”
After that, the priest leaned back and shrugged, ending the conversation worth 5,000 AC.
Leo understood that the last few words were the most valuable things he could have gotten for that money.
Something fishy… Leo pondered for a moment before shifting to the main topic.
“I was looking for elves, specifically wood elves,” Leo stated as they started the main business talk.
“Elves… they are always out of stock. Please come at a later date.”
“Huh? Why?” Leo asked, slightly puzzled.
“You really don’t know? Like the fact that even their average beats the top beauties among humans?” the priest said incredulously.
“Oh…” Leo finally realised what he meant.
“Not even males?”
The priest was taken aback.
“What do you even need males for… anyway, they are just as much in demand as females. Though the only customers for them are females, in my case.”
“At least tell me how much they are priced? And what about wood elves? What’s the difference between normal elves and them?”
“Females would be at least 1 million AC, and that’s for the lowest category ones which include elves with no soul rank. The top ones might go for 10s of millions. As for the difference between normal and wood… the former ones are native to the world of the people from the Aeloria Empire, and they would be good at administrative skills. The wood ones are from another wild world—where the intelligent goblins, orcs, and even barbarian humans come from.”
“They are skilled in making great wooden housing and crafts from natural materials, good at hunting using long-range equipment, and some are proficient in using a dagger. And yep, their price is higher due to all that… and because they don’t even understand what exactly the masters are doing to them at ’that’ time as they leave their homes soon after reaching adulthood to reduce the pressure on the tribe.”
“…People love to play around with innocents…” the priest added slowly.
Leo nodded. He could already see why they would always be sold out, even if they were expensive.
But this expensive? Damn…
“Looks like capturing them directly from a secret realm might be better…” Leo muttered, but the priest caught onto it immediately.
“You are deciding to enter wood elves’ secret realms?” the priest asked, glancing at Leo’s badge once again to confirm he was from the 1st term.
“Though there indeed are some elven secret realms assigned to your term, but… wait, no!”
“You will fall into debt. I suggest you not.”
Leo frowned.
“Why would I fall into debt?”
The priest scrunched his brow.
“Didn’t you read the proper guidelines to enter an otherworldly domain? A professor will be assigned to you or your group, like a shadow, to safeguard you from higher-level danger. And the entry cost in such domains is 50,000 AC per person, of which 80% goes into the professor’s pocket. And God forbid the professor needs to step in to save you in any case—if you were careless enough to let an enemy sneak up on you, or the enemy turned out to be stronger than expected, you need to pay 1 million AC for every person that is saved.”
“And wood elves are said to take out Peak 3-star beasts easily with their coordinated attacks.”
“Why a professor? Shouldn’t the life bracelet be enough?”
The priest sighed, rubbing his temple.
“You really didn’t go through the guidelines…”
“Life bracelets don’t work inside otherworldly domains.”
