Chapter 353: Luxurious Sheds – 3
“Don’t be in a rush. As a matter of fact, you are achieving nothing by listing things to me. This territory’s management head is Lily, here,” he said, gesturing towards her.
“By the way, what is your name?” Leo asked.
Sylrael, who was looking towards Lily, turned back to Leo.
“Sylrael…” she responded, her voice low, burdened by complicated thoughts.
“So… Sylrael, I suppose you are the leader of all the elves present here?”
“Yes.”
“Good, now hear me. I don’t know what you have been thinking of us, or what you think will happen to you,” Leo said, looking straight into her crystal green eyes.
“But I assure you that nothing will ever happen, nor will I ever allow anything disgraceful to happen to you, your friends, sisters, future territory members, and yeah, future slaves. You might think that I am faking because of the circumstances in which you were brought here, but there is no other way for another race member—as you can see—to live in this place.”
He continued, as Sylrael paid close attention to his words.
“Now you might ask why go to such lengths to reach your place specifically and capture you to bring you here. Truth be told, there was no specific reason; it was your luck or bad luck that you and your people caught our eyes. We saw you had the numbers and strength to satisfy our needs, and we came.” He paused, giving Sylrael time to digest the words.
“Currently, the place where you are soon going to start residing is new and needs competent people to build it up.” He extended both his hands wide and gestured towards Lily, Kaelion, and Miho. Brok already seemed to have departed when Lily gave him that gaze after they landed and dismounted from his eagle.
It was clear Brok still wasn’t a core member.
“These three, including me, are the core members of this territory standing right before you. Just this much.”
Kaelion wasn’t surprised at all. Somehow, he could tell a strange bond had started to form between them.
“And the 4 of us are not the best. Leave best, it would be generous to say we are somehow making things work. If you had listened when we were talking at the temple, my girl—Lily pointed out so many flaws in me that I was on the verge of crying.”
He was not; he was saying all this for effect. Kaelion knew this, but he couldn’t even give a sneer since he knew what Leo was doing was important.
“So coming back, we need competent people to make this territory grow. But tell me, if you have all the competency in the world and the leader knows it—he knows that if you…” Leo purposefully pointed at Sylrael without breaking eye contact.
“Yes, you. That you aren’t loyal to him, and there is this thought in the back of his mind that if you reach an appropriate power status, you have a chance to overthrow him, using his roots for your gains and ultimately making his roots shallow, do you think he will ever allow you to work freely?”
This time, Kaelion couldn’t hold back as he shook his head slowly.
He and his fear of backstabbing people… Sometimes I wonder how he even allowed those three blue-haired girls to come in. Though I can understand…
But oblivious to his thoughts, Sylrael finally started to realise what Leo was talking about. She thought for a while and spoke slowly.
“Slaves… willingly or unwillingly, they are always loyal.”
Clap!
Leo clapped as she came out of the web of her thoughts.
“Absolutely correct, that’s the reason you are here. Because do you actually think me—” He pointed at himself exaggeratedly.
“—who is ranked first in strength, will have trouble gathering a crowd of people to stand beside me? Never. But the main problem is that loyalty cannot be gathered by flaunting myself; it must be earned and given time. But I don’t have time for that when the world is filled with the people you see in your dreams. Because those same people will stab me in the back when a stronger fellow… if that’s ever possible, appears”
“Tell me, will you ever trust any person who has even once appeared in your dreams and acts like a saint outwardly?” he asked, his eyes never leaving hers, as if looking for an answer.
Sylrael’s face hardened.
“Never… Never. Even if they become a god one day and the whole world stands beside them, I will be against the world,” she said resolutely.
Leo nodded; his part was done.
Then he added,
“I won’t ask you to believe in me from the get-go. Take your time to adjust and make your sisters adjust. See what happens in the territory and what our behaviour towards you is, because in the end, it’s our actions that will justify my words. And as for the question when it will happen? We have a long road ahead, and I have plenty of time to earn your ’real’ loyalty, because you cannot—”
“Betray…” By the end of it, Leo saw a hint of a smile appear for the very first time on this sullen elf’s face.
—Brant Quarters—
“They successfully captured 20 elves? And inside a secret realm bordering the strength levels of the Mid Purple Star?” Brant was amazed. He was lying lazily on his comfortable sofa, while Katherine sat next to him elegantly, sipping her tea.
“And like brother Tarun, as you guessed, the boy indeed seems to hold secrets… leaning towards the good side.”
“I knew it the moment I saw a soul talent appear out of nowhere on the outskirts. These things don’t get distributed on a whim.” Brant suddenly shook his head, as if even talking about it was wrong.
“So I guess their territory is safe with those elves?”
“100%. One of the elves is a Low 4-star, and you know about wood elves—they will make you cry tears of blood by continuously healing; immortal bastards. So nothing else to worry about, not to mention that savage beast is sitting right beneath their feet. Sometimes I think Leo might actually make the strongest living city if they proceed at this pace.”
Brant waved dismissively.
“You keep worrying about the future; let’s talk about the present. So it’s safe for Leo to leave the territory now, I think?”
“Yes… to be honest, even if he were to leave alone before, I don’t think the territory would face any problem with K and Lily sitting behind.”
Brant shrugged.
“True, but with that big-ass natural treasure that he flaunts openly, anybody can attack him… though I suppose they will only come when it advances.”
“So where do you plan to take Leo?” Katherine asked.
“Hm? He asked for a place where he could find a good water beast. I will take him to the lake.”
Katherine’s eyes sparkled slightly.
“Lake? The same one where you caught your huge-ass General Rank octopus?”
“That’s a Kraken, you crazy woman. But yeah, there.”
Katherine suddenly appeared in front of Brant and cupped his face, her own face dangerously close to his.
“Say that phrase again, and I will show you what a real crazy woman looks like.”
