Zhao Xue stood there awkwardly, her emotional intelligence already allowing her to guess the relationship between Zheng Xinyu and Zhang Su. She looked at Zhang Su, bewildered.
“Go ahead, she’s a good person.”
Zhang Su showed a smile full of meaning.
“You!”
Zheng Xinyu rolled her eyes at Zhang Su and helped Zhao Xue slowly walk downstairs.
“Let’s go, let’s grab some food!”
Zhang Su called Zhong Xiaoshan to go downstairs together.
“Have you retrieved the weapons from Yileiwen Convenience Store? So, what’s the plan now?”
Zhong Xiaoshan asked quietly.
“We’re going to Yihe Car Shop to get some guns. That thing is a real weapon of mass destruction. Last night, because that group took my two crossbows, they ambushed us and injured two of our people. If we face off directly, someone’s likely to die!”
Zhang Su said very seriously.
He never really had a chance to use the crossbows he bought; he just fiddled with them secretly. But he didn’t expect the enemy to use them to injure his own people!
Zhong Xiaoshan pursed her lips and said, “It’s so dangerous. It would be best not to have any conflict…”
“That’s impossible… Hey, what do you want to eat, bread or instant noodles?”
In the course of their conversation, they took some food back to the dry-cleaning shop.
“You… yikes!”
In the ramen shop’s kitchen warehouse, Zheng Xinyu was helping Zhao Xue change clothes. When she saw Zhao Xue take off her clothes, she was startled by the scars on her body.
Besides the bruises, her fair skin had many scratches, and the fine blood marks had just begun to scab. She must have suffered a lot of abuse before.
“Don’t tell Brother Su, these little wounds are nothing.”
Zhao Xue had a peaceful night’s sleep, the only restful night since the apocalypse started, and she had regained a lot of energy. She even had the mood to make a funny face at Zheng Xinyu.
Zheng Xinyu felt very sad seeing Zhao Xue’s optimistic demeanor. She softly helped her change clothes and whispered, “Xiaoxue, do you still like Brother Su now?”
“Ah?”
Zhao Xue cautiously put on her pants, which were slightly too big but comfortable to move around in. She looked at Zheng Xinyu in surprise, “I’ve never liked him at all.”
“Eh?”
Zheng Xinyu was stunned. She clearly remembered Zhang Su saying that Zhao Xue used to like him. Could he have been deluding himself?
Doesn’t seem like it.
But why would Zhao Xue say that? Zheng Xinyu suspected Zhao Xue was lying, but she had no evidence.
“All done!” In no time, Zhao Xue finished changing. Stretching out her arms to take a look, she smiled, “Versace jeans paired with an Yifree wool coat; this would have cost nearly ten thousand before. Who would’ve thought I’d be wearing brands I couldn’t afford before the apocalypse!”
“It does look really good…”
Zheng Xinyu nodded in agreement, contemplating going through the pile of clothes to find something too. Then she sneaked over to Zhao Xue.
“Xiaoxue, if you like Zhang Su, just tell him. I won’t be jealous! As long as Brother Su is happy, I’m fine with it. I said the same to Zhong Xiaoshan back then. In times like these, who knows if we’ll be alive tomorrow? I don’t want to stress over it, it’s too tiring!”
This time it was Zhao Xue who was shocked, looking incredulously at Zheng Xinyu, who was around the same age as her. “You guys… well, I really admire you, but I honestly don’t like Zhang Su. Don’t go making matches blindly.”
Zheng Xinyu frowned, peeking at Zhao Xue, not believing a word she said. But she had gone this far, and the other side was adamant. It was odd, but she had no choice.
“Ahem, Xinyu, um, can we eat now? I’m starving.”
Zhao Xue felt embarrassed under Zheng Xinyu’s gaze, touched her empty belly and smiled awkwardly. She was indeed hungry, having not eaten anything for a day.
“Oh, oh, sorry, let’s go, let’s go. What do you want to eat? We have lots of options, chips, instant noodles, bread. It’s a pity there’s no fire, or I could’ve cooked some snail noodles—they’re so delicious, I’m telling you…”
Zheng Xinyu couldn’t figure out what Zhao Xue was thinking, but she liked this optimistic young woman and led her to find something to eat.
After breakfast, Zhang Su gathered everyone on the second floor of the dry-cleaning shop and said, “First, to the two who were injured last night, Chen Hanzhou gets a can of fruit, you can choose peach, strawberry, or coconut. Pei Lan, who was seriously injured, gets two cans of fruit, two bags of pork jerky, and a Swiss roll.”
“Thanks for the compensation for such minor injuries, Brother Su.”
Chen Hanzhou touched the two band-aids on his cheek, nodding blankly as if the smile had disappeared from his face forever.
Pei Lan, who was sitting next to Lu Yubo, immediately stood up after hearing Zhang Su’s words and said awkwardly, “I didn’t even help and caused trouble. It’s not right to take compensation.”
“You and Xinyu successfully disrupted the enemy’s rhythm, trading your injury for our safety. You must accept the compensation. Alright, onto the next thing.”
Zhang Su made the final decision and then gestured towards Zhao Xue beside him, saying, “Welcome our new team member, Zhao Xue. She is meticulous and responsible, never missed charging a customer correctly, and in two years only misused one pack of Whisper sanitary pads. Please keep an eye on her so she can improve quickly!”
“Why do you remember things from so long ago…”
Zhao Xue, who had been smiling at everyone, didn’t expect her embarrassing moment to be exposed, and she felt deeply embarrassed.
She wasn’t like that idiot Wu Lue; after working for a while, she sensed something was up with Zhang Su. After investigating, she realized he was the boss of the Yileiwen Convenience Store, but they both pretended to be oblivious.
“Hahaha, welcome, welcome.”
“Welcome, pretty lady…”
Everyone clapped softly, and the atmosphere was very harmonious.
