Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person - Chapter 144 106: Encountering the Zombie Horde

“The vehicle assignments remain unchanged. Xiaoxue and Luezi, you sit in Old Tan’s car!”
Zhang Su stood by the van and gave instructions, silently calculating the combat effectiveness of each vehicle, reassured only when it seemed balanced.
Then he continued, “We’ll pass by Yileiwen Convenience Store soon, fill up all the empty spaces in the cars! No junk food, grab high-calorie items and water. Those beasts can’t eat much, pack it to the max!”
“Got it!”
Everyone responded one after another.
The consumption of more than ten people is indeed high. We were packed full when we came yesterday, but after two meals, there’s a lot of space freed up, with over twenty liters of water already consumed!
Running out of supplies can make people anxious, and it’s crucial not to miss any opportunity to replenish.
Once everything was ready, the convoy set off again. Zhang Su touched the spot on the steering wheel where the airbag had deployed and thought it was time for this battle vehicle to retire.
After a night passed, a few zombies emerged sporadically on the street that the horde had passed through, already left behind and isolated.
Three or five zombies posed no threat to the group. After dealing with them one by one, the convoy reached the entrance of Yileiwen.
Nearing Yileiwen Convenience Store, Tan Huajun noticed Zhao Xue’s breathing from the back seat starting to quicken. She glanced at the central rearview mirror and kindly said, “Wu Lue, you stay in the car to take care of Xiaoxue. No need to get out.”
“Alright!”
Chen Hanzhou expressed his agreement succinctly.
“Okay, sorry for the trouble…”
Zhao Xue clutched her chest, her expression not looking good. Her darkest days in over two decades were those few days at Yileiwen Convenience Store.
Zhang Su braked hard and parked the van in front of the store. After getting out, he looked around and remarked, “I was loading here the night before the disaster struck; back then, Luezi lent a hand. Now…”
He shook his head, pulled out a key, opened the shutter door, and motioned to the people behind him, “Hurry up!”
Without needing reminders, everyone quickly entered the convenience store.
Roar…
Suddenly, a zombie jumped out from the corner.
“Damn it!”
Lu Yubo was startled, instinctively thrusting a food sampler out in the darkness, but it missed the mark and only made a hole in the zombie’s chest. Unfortunately, such an attack didn’t deter the zombie’s onslaught.
Thud.
Luckily, at that moment, Zheng Xinyu, coming from behind, gave the zombie’s head a solid whack with a baseball bat, allowing Lu Yubo the time to pull out the sampler and land a precise hit on the zombie’s head.
“Damn it, who didn’t finish it off last night, almost got me killed!”
Looking at the fallen zombie, Lu Yubo was full of anger.
“It was missed… you know what it was like last night. Hurry up, deal with the task at hand!”
Zheng Xinyu urged.
The group began to scour for supplies, stepping over several bodies on the ground as if they didn’t exist.
Zhang Su found the convenience store’s inventory to be comprehensive and abundant, far superior to a gas station convenience store. Even though Da Tie and a few others had ransacked it a bit, there was still plenty left.
However, no sooner had they entered the store than a group of staggering zombies appeared at a nearby intersection and inexplicably turned towards Yileiwen!
Zhang Su, on lookout, was leaning against the door with a cigarette. After exchanging a few words with Zhao Dezhu, who had come out first carrying over a dozen packs of cigarettes, he looked up, only to feel his bladder tighten as he saw a horde of zombies already closing in to a distance of forty or fifty meters!
It seemed far, but it really wasn’t.
At that moment, the zombies were in a dazed wandering state, moving slowly. Yet, once they discovered the delicious feast at Yileiwen’s entrance, they would start sprinting at speeds of four to five meters per second without any pressure!
“Quick, get out! Zombies are coming…”
Zhang Su was terrified, breaking into a cold sweat, and quickly called out to the people inside the convenience store, though not daring to raise his voice too high.
“Shit!”
Zhao Dezhu, who was about to toss the cigarettes into the car, looked up towards the intersection, jolted by the sight of a black mass of at least a hundred zombies in the distance. Such numbers could potentially be dealt with only in cover, but were extremely dangerous on the open street!
He hurriedly rushed to the car to grab a weapon.
The people inside the convenience store didn’t dare delay, knowing that if it were just a few zombies, Zhang Su wouldn’t have bothered to inform them and would have dealt with it himself. His urgent warning meant a large force was coming!
The group rushed out, some even discarding what they had, prioritizing survival.
The commotion of ten or so people was not quiet. While zombies have poor eyesight and hearing, they aren’t completely deaf and blind. The dozen or so zombies at the forefront quickly noticed something amiss and let out a strange cry, charging towards Yileiwen.
The zombies following them seemed to sense the call of their companions and also began to run!
“Not good! They’ve spotted us!”
Zhang Su was about to run towards the van when he saw the zombie horde moving, while several people, including Zheng Xinyu, were just emerging from the store.
From the timing, the zombies could reach where the vehicles were parked before everyone was on board.
Even in the best-case scenario where everyone got in the cars, there still wasn’t enough time to start and drive off. At least two of the vehicles would be overrun by the zombies!
Once encircled by the zombies, the car windows couldn’t provide effective protection, and the outcome would be dire.
“Except for the drivers and those injured, everyone else, follow me! Xinyu, you drive the van… take it to the laundromat intersection!”
Zhang Su shouted to the crowd; there was no point in keeping his voice down now. He armed himself with an axe and a machete and moved forward to buy time for his companions to start the car.
They had two choices: abandon the vehicles and flee, or have some hold off the zombies! Zhang Su chose the latter. The four vehicles contained food, water, tools, weapons, a generator, and more — too important to leave behind. They had to make a stand, and if it didn’t work out, then they could flee later!
The situation was extremely critical. Fortunately, no one was inexperienced; the group acted according to Zhang Su’s instructions without panic.
The drivers quickly rushed to their respective vehicles, while Chen Hanzhou, Zhao Dezhu, and Yuwen grabbed weapons and joined the defense against the zombies, even the frail Yu Qing assisted beside her father!
These few dared to follow Zhang Su into danger for a reason.
Except for Chen Hanzhou, the others all realized a problem.
Zhang Su arranged for his four most trusted people to be the drivers, leaving only himself to delay the zombies.
The purpose was obvious: to reassure those fighting alongside him that they wouldn’t be left behind as the cars drove away…
