Chapter 55: Chapter 52: I Paid for This Apartment in Full
“Brother Su, that SWAT officer is talking to us!”
Zhong Xiaoshan also noticed the situation across from them, but unfortunately, due to the noisy environment, she couldn’t hear what the other party was saying.
Zhang Su frowned tightly, glanced downstairs, and the massive explosion attracted the surrounding zombies. The bewildered zombies were flocking towards the second unit, and the curling flames had already engulfed the fourth and fifth floors. With the wind fueling the fire, it wouldn’t be long before it reached their side!
Thinking of running?
Definitely don’t want to…
Zhang Su had planned in advance to carry portable supplies that could be easily taken along and planned to leave the community only after consuming the immovable supplies. In his expectation, by then, the three of them would have considerable fighting strength and tacit understanding, allowing them to better face the harsh environment.
Unfortunately, plans never keep up with changes!
Zhang Su nodded heavily towards the opposite side, then turned around and said to Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan, “Get the bags, we are leaving!”
“Ah? This, this, this…”
Zheng Xinyu spun around anxiously in place.
Knowing in her heart that they would have to leave here sooner or later, yet so suddenly made it somewhat difficult to react.
Zhong Xiaoshan was better than Zheng Xinyu. She didn’t live in this community, so her sense of belonging was limited. Ever since Zhang Su said they were going to leave, she had been mentally prepared, and her level of acceptance was higher than Zheng Xinyu’s.
“Sister Xinyu, hurry up and get ready!”
Seeing Zheng Xinyu at a loss, Zhong Xiaoshan grabbed her hand and ran towards the bedroom!
Before this, Zhang Su had already stored supplies in his bag as much as possible. In case of an emergency, like now, they could just grab their bags and go!
Soon, six bulging backpacks were brought to the living room, each filled with various kinds of supplies.
Thud!
Zhang Su lifted the box containing weapons from under the bed. Inside was only the finest kukri left; he attached the sheath to his waist, an absolute weapon in close combat!
“Bring the crowbar and fire axe, those will be useful!”
Weapons are crucial resources, even prioritized over food!
The two women knew there was no time to delay and didn’t dare hesitate, pursing their lips and quickly picking up whatever weapons they could attach to their bags.
“No more time, let’s go!”
Zhang Su ran to the window again for a look. The fire was fierce, already burning up to the seventh floor of the next unit. Because of the wind direction, smoke started trickling from their unit’s ground floor!
Without firefighting, it was likely the whole building was in trouble.
“Wait!”
Suddenly Zheng Xinyu called out anxiously, “The armguards, we forgot the armguards!”
Due to the cold weather, the few of them wore more clothing, causing them to forget about the armguards.
Armguards are indispensable protective gear. They hurriedly put on the modified armguards, which covered not just the arms but even the calves, making them look like hockey players.
“Go, go!”
The three donned their protective gear, with heavy backpacks on their chests and backs, each holding a handy weapon, and rushed to the door.
Zhang Su glanced back, noticing a pack of water still in the corner, gritted his teeth and ran back to grab it.
“Brother Su, there’s plenty of water, let’s go.”
Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan, standing by the door, waved urgently.
“Damn it, the house I bought in full cash!”
Arriving at the door, Zhang Su nostalgically glanced back before slamming it shut, then pointed at the emergency exit: “Downstairs!”
Thump thump thump, thump thump thump.
The rapid footsteps echoed in the stairwell. Zhang Su took the lead, almost jumping down the stairs while Zheng Xinyu followed closely behind, copying his every move, jumping forward and swinging her body off the rail to land.
Zhong Xiaoshan had the hardest time; her legs were slightly fatigued from the stair-jumping practice, and now with heavy supplies on her back, she was noticeably out of sync.
She remained silent, gritting her teeth, staring intently at the stairs below, steadily running down, a bit slower but just about a floor behind.
“Hold on!”
Reaching the fourth floor, Zhang Su suddenly stopped, his eyes narrowed, looking down, though he saw nothing, the hurried footsteps couldn’t lie.
“Someone!”
“They must be survivors from the lower floors, great!”
Zheng Xinyu showed a brief smile, thinking that seeing living people was better than zombies at a time like this.
“Go!”
Zhang Su made no comments, his gaze narrowing as he continued running down.
The stairwell was a mess, littered with scattered debris and parked electric scooters, affecting their speed, but fortunately, there were no zombies.
Thud…
As they reached the second floor, they simultaneously heard a heavy crashing sound.
“Damn, might be the PVC windows getting burned!”
Zhang Su didn’t stop, speaking in amazement.
The two women were not as composed as him, keeping their mouths shut, having no time to speak.
Soon the three reached the first floor.
Zheng Xinyu followed Zhang Su closely, expecting him to head out the unit door, but instead, she found him continuing to run downward!
Zhang Su slowed down and gestured them to keep up, adjusting his breathing. Once Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan were right behind him, he whispered, “Those two didn’t leave the unit!”
Meaning those two also went to the parking garage.
“But you said there would be lots of zombies in the parking garage!”
Zheng Xinyu whispered, her heart still pounding from the intense motion.
On the first day of the disaster outbreak, Zhang Su and Zheng Xinyu had deduced from various pieces of information that the zombie outbreak occurred around seven o’clock in the morning, which was the morning rush hour for work and school.
Sheng Qin Home used a human-vehicle separation design, meaning homeowners who drove out left their cars in the underground parking, resulting in more people underground than on the surface!
Zhang Su hugged the wall as he slowly proceeded downward, nodding in agreement, “Yes, it was definitely like that then, but not necessarily now, and we need a vehicle to get out!”
The road conditions were unknown, but vehicles passed through daily, indicating it wasn’t bad enough to prevent passage.
In areas dense with zombies, attempting to cross on foot was nearly impossible; the mobility of vehicles was unmatched.
“My Haranda is parked near beneath the building…”
Zhong Xiaoshan suppressed her hurried breathing, speaking.
Zhang Su nodded, his van was even closer, just left of the stairwell exit, the second parking spot. Buying a house in full granted him the privilege to select prime parking spaces.
Their steps were soft, descending into the dimly lit underground where all lighting had ceased due to power loss, yet faint light shimmered around the stairwell’s final turn.
Zhang Su raised an eyebrow, signaling silence to the ones behind, his ears keenly listening.
“Bro, there must be at least eighty, if not a hundred zombies in that garage. Can’t we find another route?”
A faint, fearful voice uttered.
“Xiaohai, stay calm!” a robust voice replied, “I’ve tried; as long as we move lightly, those bastards have a hard time noticing us. Don’t panic, follow me, remember, absolutely, absolutely, absolutely make no sound!”
The robust voice repeatedly emphasized.
“Bro, I’m still scared, what if the zombies find us?” the faint, fearful voice spoke again.
“Don’t worry, we have weapons. If zombies find us, we attack. I’ve confirmed your theory; just damage their brains, aim for the head!” the robust voice was very patient.
This time, the fearful voice said no more.
