Chapter 73: Chapter 68: I Feel Like You’re Insulting Me
“The demons from Hell are rampaging all over the streets; you’re not needed, you bastard!”
Zhang Su spat on the ground, then turned to the people next to him and said, “Go!”
Without waiting for the zombies to finish their meal, Zhang Su grabbed his weapon and charged forward, followed closely by Zhong Xiaoshan and Wang Guangjun.
“Give it back to me!”
Zheng Xinyu found herself empty-handed and snatched the baseball bat back from Pan Ru, then rushed forward.
While the zombies were eating, they seemed almost sedated, much quieter in comparison, showing no reaction to people approaching; this relieved the pressure on Zhang Su and his group, almost like a sneak attack.
Thud, bang.
In a flash, Zhang Su and Wang Guangjun each took down a zombie, while Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan’s attacks were slightly weaker, but they also managed to kill two after a few blows.
By the time the remaining two zombies launched another attack, it was too late; in less than a minute, the four of them had wiped out the six zombies entirely, leaving them lying lifelessly on the side.
“Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle…”
Covered in blood from multiple wounds, Ma Xuechuo was not quite dead, staring at the few people in front of him with fish-dead eyes, a tinge of regret inexplicably surfacing in his heart.
Regretting why he had to go against such formidable people…
If he really chose to kill zombies, could he have become one of their companions and lived on well?
Unfortunately, there was no chance to redo it, and ultimately, he unwillingly closed his eyes.
“In this world now, there’s no room for sympathy at all!”
Zhang Su looked coldly at the dying Ma Xuechuo and said to the people around him.
“I didn’t expect this, I thought he was full of morale and really going to kill zombies, but he backstabbed us. Such a person is terrifying.”
Zhong Xiaoshan held a bloody iron plate in her hand, a hint of incomprehension on her face, as the twist of human nature constantly challenged her mind.
“He’s definitely not the worst!”
Zhang Su gave Ma Xuechuo one last look, then lifted his head to look outside; the zombies on the street were cleared, and those farther away were about a hundred meters away; this gas station was temporarily considered safe.
He turned to Pan Ru, who was shivering in the back: “You can go, adapt to this new world. Oh, by the way, that Q5 reeks, I don’t want it, you can take it.”
Pan Ru looked desolately at the unfamiliar and dilapidated street, realizing that Zhang Su was genuinely not interested in her and had no intention of adding her to the team; insisting further was meaningless.
Shivering, she moved towards the Q5, pausing as she brushed past Zhang Su, looking at him.
“Thank you, you’re a good person.”
Zhang Su seemed to be electrocuted, eyes wide as he looked at the woman nearby; he couldn’t recall the last time he received such a ’good person’ card.
“Zhang Su, you’re a real bastard.”
“Zhang Su, you scumbag!”
“Zhang Su, you’re a total jerk.”
“Brother Su, this is pretty heartless.”
These were the comments he heard the most…
Zhang Su chuckled at himself and said, “I gladly accept your thanks, but when you say I’m a good person, why do I feel like you’re cursing me?”
Pan Ru shook her head and gave a bitter smile, looking at Ma Xuechuo’s corpse, she said, “Meeting you guys is my good fortune; you revealed this guy’s true nature; otherwise, I would’ve been sold by him, not knowing where I’d end up dead in some dark corner.”
Zhang Su didn’t deny Pan Ru’s assumption; based on Ma Xuechuo’s actions, it was entirely possible. He raised his hand, gently patting Pan Ru’s shoulder: “Go, and I hope you have good luck on your journey.”
“Brother, can I trade something else to get that watch back?”
Pan Ru said hesitantly, avoiding eye contact with Zhang Su.
Zhang Su raised an eyebrow, confused: “It can’t be eaten or drunk, so why do you want it? And what do you plan to trade for it?”
Pan Ru pointed to the Q5, saying: “Anything from the car, as long as you see something you like… that watch was a birthday gift from my mom, and I want to keep it.”
Zhang Su sighed inwardly; survival for tomorrow was already a question, yet she was still thinking about these possessions, but he thought having such a hope was good as it served as a mental support.
As he was pondering, he felt something tap his arm; looking over, he found Zheng Xinyu handing over a gift box.
“Trade for something useful instead…”
Zheng Xinyu thought they’d be cursed for taking someone’s only sentimental token.
“I’ll go check the car!”
Zhang Su took the gift box and walked towards the Q5.
The stench of rotting zombies was unbearable, but the stink of mixed waste was even worse. Zhang Su, ready to step into the car, withdrew immediately, then went to the trunk, rummaging around, and returned to Pan Ru with a toolbox.
“Do you guys understand engineering or mechanical repairs?”
Zhang Su found a Ph.D. toolbox in the car, slightly bigger than a briefcase, filled with exquisite tools, including an electric screwdriver, hand saw, various wrenches, and hammers.
Pan Ru looked puzzled at the toolbox, shook her head blankly: “I work at a bank, and he hangs around at his parents’ teahouse, probably… came with the car purchase.”
Zhang Su nodded, regardless of its origin, it was a good thing, handing over the watch box to Pan Ru: “A box for a box. Here, it’s got some blood on it, clean it yourself.”
“Thank you, thank you. Thank you all…”
Pan Ru quickly took the gift box, cradled it, her eyes instantly turning red, bowing repeatedly in thanks, and she didn’t forget to thank Zheng Xinyu and the others.
“Take it.”
Zhang Su handed the toolbox to Zhong Xiaoshan, then pulled out a box of self-heating rice and a bottle of water from his backpack, placing them in Pan Ru’s arms solemnly: “Be ruthless, be utterly shameless, that’s the only hope to survive!”
The rare generosity left both Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan stunned; in their minds, Zhang Su was notoriously stingy, yet now he was willing to give up precious food and water, truly rare.
“Could it be because this toolbox is worth a lot?”
Both couldn’t help but think.
In the past, a Ph.D. toolbox with 108 pieces cost less than two thousand yuan, perhaps just over a thousand on some promotion, far from the value of a Cartier watch, but now it’s completely different!
Weapons, food, water, medicines, and tools are essentials for survival!
If industrial recovery could happen soon, that would be fine; if things continued deteriorating, the value of tools would only increase.
The high value of tools was one thing; another was Zhang Su’s message that Pan Ru should take the food and drink and leave quickly; what’s in the convenience store was none of her business…
“Thank you…”
Pan Ru didn’t have too many complex thoughts; she knew it was time to leave, so without further hesitation, she ran back to the car. Although she wanted to grab more things from the convenience store, she dared not make such a request.
Zhang Su didn’t ask Pan Ru where she was going because he couldn’t offer more help; asking was meaningless.
Pan Ru also didn’t tell Zhang Su where she was headed because she didn’t know herself; perhaps she’d first get some warm clothing, perhaps find a decent shelter…
The vehicle started, and Pan Ru waved to Zhang Su and the others as she slowly drove out of the gas station, heading into the unknown ahead.
