Chapter 76: Chapter 71: Double Kill by the Fierce Woman
Zhang Su finished using the toilet and tried the faucet, but there was no water. Returning to the convenience store, he saw Zheng Xinyu chatting with a middle-aged woman, Wang Guangjun standing nearby holding a crowbar, while Zhong Xiaoshan was pacing back and forth in front of the shelves counting supplies.
Zhang Su walked over to Zheng Xinyu and asked, “Did you find out anything?”
Zhang Su’s presence startled the woman; she felt that among the four people present, Zhang Su was the most intimidating.
Zheng Xinyu said, “Her name is Tan Huajun, a local from Qin City, thirty-seven years old, living right next to Phoenix International District. The zombie outbreak happened while she was on her night shift, before her colleague could take over.”
“Tan Huajun, right? Come on, sit down and talk.”
Zhang Su gave a faint smile and pointed to a nearby shelf that originally held bottled water.
“No, no, thank you.”
Tan Huajun waved her plump hands repeatedly, showing extreme fear of Zhang Su.
Zhang Su said to Zheng Xinyu and Wang Guangjun, “You guys go move stuff, I’ll chat with Sister Tan.”
“B-brother, hello, brother.”
Tan Huajun almost scared herself into hiccups when she heard the intimidating Zhang Su wanted to chat with her, quickly offering greetings.
“I may not be exceedingly handsome, but am I really that frightening to you?”
Zhang Su was quite puzzled.
Tan Huajun’s face twitched, showing a smile uglier than crying, stammering, “Brother, you’re very handsome, not frightening.”
Zhang Su noticed Tan Huajun glancing intentionally or unintentionally at the sheath on his waist and suddenly understood, “You saw everything happening outside earlier, right?”
“No, no, I didn’t! Brother, my eyesight is poor, I can’t see things clearly, I’ve been hiding in the office all along, knowing nothing, really!”
This statement deeply stimulated Tan Huajun. She denied vehemently, not even realizing she sounded illogical.
Zhang Su scratched his face, furrowing his brow, “If you saw it, you saw it. I won’t kill you to silence you, relax.”
Despite being comforting words, in Tan Huajun’s ears, it was like a deadly spell that made her collapse to the ground, crying, “Brother, I won’t say anything, I really won’t, don’t kill me, I have a father above and a daughter below, please don’t kill me.”
“Did you even listen to what I was saying?” Zhang Su frowned, suddenly feeling that the challenge seemed harder than he imagined; this woman seemed impervious to reason.
“Listening, listening, brother, I hear whatever you say, just please don’t kill me.”
Tan Huajun nodded vigorously, her tear-streaked face greasy.
“I’m kindhearted, wouldn’t randomly kill people! Come on, stand up, I really need to ask you something, don’t be afraid.”
Zhang Su unabashedly praised himself, then helped Tan Huajun up.
Wang Guangjun and the others glanced over curiously, not understanding why Zhang Su was treating this middle-aged woman so politely.
“You must often work night shifts, right? I always refuel here and know your colleague, that Fat Xu, but haven’t seen you, smoke?”
Zhang Su let Tan Huajun sit, handing her a cigarette.
Upon knowing Zhang Su recognized her colleague, Tan Huajun’s panic subsided quite a bit. Seeing the cigarette in front, she instinctively pointed to the no smoking sign but considered the situation now, saying awkwardly, “I don’t smoke, thank you, brother.”
“No one has visited the gas station these past days?”
Zhang Su lit a cigarette on his own, asking.
“Actually, before today, there were at least thirty or so, well, those zombie creatures you mentioned, and around midnight there was an explosion across the way that lured away a bunch of zombies.”
With her mood stabilized, Tan Huajun expressed herself clearly.
“An explosion?” Zhang Su pondered briefly, he had been sleeping hard during the midnight when Zheng Xinyu was on night duty, didn’t hear the explosion, besides many places around had been blowing up recently, indistinguishable in direction.
“Yes, seemed like a car crash explosion, I heard braking noises, and after the explosion a lot of car alarms went off, the zombie creatures roared and ran away!”
Tan Huajun uncomfortably rubbed her hands, hesitantly asking, “Brother, what’s happening outside, where did these creatures come from, do you know anything?”
Zhang Su shook his head decisively and said, “I slept until past ten that morning, woke to find no cell signal; what happened here that day?”
“That morning I was almost off shift, around seven, wrapping up accounts waiting for Xiaolan to take over, but she never showed up. While playing on my phone, someone needed refueling, so I went out once, it was approximately seven fifteen when an accident occurred on the road…”
Tan Huajun recounted slowly, matching Zhang Su and Zheng Xinyu’s earlier assumptions.
“You live across the two walls at Phoenix International? How come you didn’t go back?”
Zhang Su pointed to the nearby district separated by two walls.
Tan Huajun smiled awkwardly; the gas station’s wall was four to five meters high, the district wall was lower but had an anti-climb barrier on top.
“Brother, I couldn’t possibly climb that wall. Initially, I did try rushing out, but ran straight into a zombie when stepping outside; barely handled it, then seeing the street packed with more, horrifyingly dense…”
“I hurried back to hide in the convenience store; there’s enough food and drink, so I didn’t go hungry, just extremely worried about home.”
Upon hearing Tan Huajun’s words, Zhang Su’s eyes lit up, “You’ve killed zombies?”
Tan Huajun nodded dumbfoundedly, pointing outside, “Yes, over by the flower bed, and one in the green belt.”
“Killed two? That’s impressive, how did you do it?”
Zhang Su asked with interest, initially thinking this plump sister was timid, possibly a burden. Never expected she’d dare kill zombies on the first day, a double kill, stronger than ninety-nine percent of survivors.
Tan Huajun recalled, “Stabbed to death with rebar…”
“Amazing,” Zhang Su couldn’t help but give a thumbs up, seems this plump sister fears people more than zombies.
Being praised made Tan Huajun steadier, hopeful for home, she looked to Zhang Su, “Brother, can you escort me home? I’ll compensate you.”
“Oh? How will you compensate? Don’t say like that other woman about offering yourself, I don’t want that!”
Zhang Su wasn’t surprised at all when hearing Tan Huajun wanted to go home.
Tan Huajun smiled embarrassingly, then glanced around, “Everything here, isn’t it enough to compensate, brother?”
Zhang Su paused, wondering if this woman was genuinely foolish or falsely clever?
“Hey, don’t you think the store’s items belong to you?”
Zheng Xinyu put down her bag, holding several packs of tissue, expressing disbelief.
“Yours, they’re yours, I’m sorry.”
Tan Huajun waved her hands continuously.
