Chapter 78: Chapter 73: Long-Awaited Hot Noodle Soup
The generator is installed next to the air conditioning unit at the back of the convenience store.
“It’s a Japanese brand, thought the quality was good, but it broke down just after a year, maybe because it hasn’t been used for a long time.”
Tan Huajun moved the noise-canceling cover aside, sat down on the ground, and began expertly disassembling the generator’s casing.
“Technician Tan, I never thought you had this skill. Did you learn it before?”
Zhang Su watched Tan Huajun’s skilled movements with astonishment.
While consulting the repair manual as she worked, Tan Huajun said, “I majored in electrical engineering in college, learned a bit but struggled to find a job, eventually got a connection to work at a gas station to pass time, never thought it would come in handy one day…”
“Little sister, your expertise will have plenty of room to shine in the future.”
Wang Guangjun nodded and said.
Tan Huajun smiled shyly, focused on her work, not saying much more.
After busying herself for more than ten minutes, Tan Huajun fastened the casing with screws, gave the starter rope a pull, and the generator emitted a sound like an old man coughing, then ran smoothly.
The noise was still there, not as exaggerated as the manual claimed.
Wang Guangjun quickly put the noise-canceling cover back on, and the sound immediately reduced significantly, not disturbing even if one stood nearby chatting.
“Technician Tan, your skills are impressive!”
Zhang Su clapped his hands lightly as praise.
Wang Guangjun also did not hold back on compliments.
“I had no choice but to learn, back in the day, we would have waited for after-sales repair, hehe.”
Tan Huajun tidied up the tools, looked at the functioning generator with some satisfaction.
The three returned to the convenience store, Zhang Su saw Zheng Xinyu filling the kettle with water.
“We can have hot soup noodles!”
Zheng Xinyu said joyfully as she saw Zhang Su return.
A simple sentence warmed everyone’s hearts.
“It’s all thanks to Technician Tan, let’s thank Sister Tan!”
Zhang Su was the first to softly clap his hands.
“Sister Tan is awesome.”
“Sister Tan is amazing!”
Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan expressed their heartfelt gratitude, as any ability that could enhance happiness in the apocalypse was precious.
“Not at all, Brother Su and Brother Wang also put in a lot of effort, helping to deal with zombies, I just contributed a little.”
Tan Huajun habitually offered a compliment, without daring to claim credit.
“Haha, Technician Tan, your position seems like a government job, your flattery skills are quite professional.”
Zhang Su joked.
Tan Huajun nodded bashfully, smiling, “Bad habit, excuse me.”
“Let’s not talk so much, everybody pick something to eat, let’s dig in!”
Zhang Su waved his hand and first headed toward the instant noodle rack.
Everyone chose instant noodles, they hadn’t eaten anything warm for days.
The temperature outside stayed in single digits, a bowl of hot water could make people feel happy, let alone fragrant instant noodles!
In no time, steaming bowls of noodles were ready. Opening a bottle of specialty sesame oil, they ate with sausages, so delicious even the zombies wouldn’t stop if they came.
The food reserves were very abundant, even a fully loaded Haranda couldn’t carry it all, so since they couldn’t take it, they ate heartily!
Everyone ate until they were full, Zhang Su and Wang Guangjun each finished three bowls of noodles, the women didn’t lag behind, plump Tan Huajun matched them with three bowls, while Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan had two bowls each.
The ground was littered with sausage skins, half a bottle of sesame oil was gone, the five of them showed impressive appetite.
After eating, they comfortably lay down right where they were, so content they didn’t want to move at all.
“So damn satisfying.”
Zhang Su sighed.
Zheng Xinyu marveled, “I can’t remember the last time eating instant noodles moved me like this, so satisfying, it’s amazing.”
“Brother Zhang, where do you plan to go next?”
Lying on his back, Wang Guangjun stared at the ceiling and asked.
“The clear goal is to make a trip to Yileiwen Convenience Store, then head towards the countryside. Actually, my goal is the same as Qin Ya’s, which is to head in the direction of Qing County, but the reality is to take it one step at a time!”
Zhang Su answered honestly.
He had no intention of going to the so-called safe zone, first because there was no certainty of it being officially established, and entering such a place would come with many restrictions, possibly making it less comfortable than being outside.
Qing County had fewer people and more mountains, which was a good choice in any case, and if that didn’t work out, they would continue heading towards the more sparsely populated northwest, there had to be a place suitable for setting up camp.
“Let’s exchange phone numbers, if there’s a signal at some point, and if I’m still alive, I’ll come find you!”
Wang Guangjun sat up and said earnestly.
“Sure, Old Wang, I hope by then you’ll bring your son along to join us, so we can survive in this crappy world together!”
Zhang Su found paper and pen from the counter, quickly jotted down a phone number, and handed it to Wang Guangjun.
“Wait… Brother Wang, are you planning to leave?”
Tan Huajun looked at Wang Guangjun in disbelief, zombies roamed outside, and hearing that Wang Guangjun was setting off alone astonished her.
Wang Guangjun carefully folded the slip of paper and put it in his pocket, smiling, “Yes, my son is at Environmental University, I have to go rescue him!”
He didn’t know if his son had survived, but he held onto hope.
“Oh my god, isn’t it three or four kilometers to Environmental University from here? Can you manage?”
Tan Huajun was startled; her home was in the next neighborhood, less than two hundred meters straight-line distance, and she couldn’t make it back.
“I have to manage, whether I can or not, haha.”
Wang Guangjun laughed heartily; of course, he had to go for his own flesh and blood.
“By the way, Technician Tan, do you have any working vehicles here? Get one for Old Wang.”
Zhang Su asked Tan Huajun.
He didn’t have any cars to spare for Wang Guangjun, there were many vehicles on the road, but most were crashed, and zombies roamed outside, so finding a functional one was not easy.
“No need, no need… Actually, I can’t drive.”
Wang Guangjun awkwardly smiled and waved his hand.
“Can’t drive? How do you deliver milk without a license?”
Zhang Su asked in surprise.
“I used an electric tricycle for deliveries, like a modified slightly larger delivery vehicle, no driver’s license required.”
Wang Guangjun explained.
“Perfect, Brother Wang, I have a small electric one!” Tan Huajun patted herself, took out two keys from the inside pocket of her jacket.
“Haha, an electric vehicle is great, just great, little sister, can you really give me this vehicle?”
Wang Guangjun was overjoyed; he had been fretting about transportation, considering to pry open a shared bike if necessary, so having a small scooter was fantastic.
Tan Huajun handed the keys to Wang Guangjun’s hands and smiled, “I don’t need it now anyway, I’m happy if it helps you. I hope your son stays safe and sound!”
“Oh, oh, little sister, thank you, you are a good person, your daughter and father will surely be blessed and protected by fortune.”
Wang Guangjun was thrilled, even spouting idioms out of excitement.
