Chapter 83: Chapter 78: Plans Can’t Keep Up with Changes
Lu Yubo felt a bit embarrassed and quickly picked up a helmet to try it on, saying, “Sister Tan, this armor’s not bad, right? Brother Su, do I look like a special police officer?”
“Speaking of special police… I wonder how Officer Qin and the others are doing.”
Zheng Xinyu took out a riot shield and swung it, feeling awkward, and then put it back.
“Wow, Brother Su, do you really have a connection with the special police?”
Lu Yubo looked at Zhang Su with admiration.
“A special police officer escaped from the district ahead of us, but took a different direction. Their team has quite a few people, but only two or three are truly effective. Forget it, let’s not talk about them…”
Zhang Su didn’t want to dwell on those people, as he believed that Qin Ya couldn’t manage the team effectively. Eventually, there might be an accident because of laggers like Yu Nuo and Liu Xuanyu!
“Forget about the rubber batons, take the shields and flashlights. Xiaobo, Old Tan, come with me, I’ll get some weapons for you two.”
With that, Zhang Su led the two towards his van.
“Hahaha, Brother Su, I knew you must have some good stuff.”
Standing next to the van, Lu Yubo rubbed his hands together, his face full of anticipation.
“The best thing is yourself, you idiot!”
Zhang Su crouched down to rummage through the car, grumbling under his breath, and then pulled out an object from under the seat that baffled the two of them.
“What the hell, Brother Su, what’s this? A deadly hoe?”
Lu Yubo exclaimed as he looked at the giant hoe-like weapon in Zhang Su’s hand, wondering why it had measurements on it.
“Hoe your sister’s head… This is a vernier caliper, for measuring! Here you go, Technician Tan, it perfectly suits your identity. It will surely work well against zombies.”
Zhang Su cheerfully handed the gigantic vernier caliper to the bewildered Tan Huajun.
“Big brother, what are you doing with this in your car, are you an engineer?”
Tan Huajun had seen vernier calipers before but never expected to see one of such enormity in his lifetime. People who can use this kind of vernier caliper aren’t simple, they’re definitely senior engineers. But why would a senior engineer drive a small van?
Ordinary vernier calipers are about thirty centimeters long; even the larger ones are only fifty centimeters. The vernier caliper in Tan Huajun’s hand at this moment was a full 1.2 meters long, capable of measuring 1-meter objects!
No wonder Lu Yubo mistook it for a hoe; it indeed bore some resemblance. Holding it, Tan Huajun looked particularly comical.
“Hehe, a self-defense weapon!” Zhang Su chuckled, “This thing isn’t contraband, so even if the police find it, it’s no problem. It gives me a strong sense of security in the car!”
“True, very true, Brother Su, you’re clearly a cultured person; carrying a vernier caliper around makes total sense!”
Lu Yubo, quick-witted, flattered him.
“Seeing how well you speak, here, take this!”
With that, Zhang Su tossed a straight steel pipe to Lu Yubo.
“What’s this?”
Holding the steel pipe, Lu Yubo examined it. It was about a meter long, with a handle on one end and a sharp point on the other. The steel pipe had a long groove, and he tested the sharpness with his hand. It was very sharp, capable of leaving a bloody hole if stabbed into someone.
“As a farmer’s child, carrying a grain sampler is also quite reasonable.”
Zhang Su explained, but it wasn’t an ordinary grain sampler; the main difference was in the material.
“Grain…” Lu Yubo shivered, not expecting this thing to come from a granary. He looked at Zhang Su with great admiration, “Brother Su, you truly amaze me, always managing to find these bizarre items!”
“Alright, kid, stop with the flattery. The grain sampler’s usage is quite singular; you need to get used to stabbing it into the heads of zombies, understand?”
Zhang Su demonstrated with a motion.
When it came to serious matters, Lu Yubo paid full attention to learning.
“Old Tan, yours is relatively simple; although it’s called a vernier caliper, you can use it as a crowbar or hoe. The measuring jaws are made from special materials, very sturdy, perfect for smashing zombie heads!”
Zhang Su was confident in the weapons in his van. These items were never shown easily and were only meant for critical moments. They had been idle since their creation, until now…
While Lu Yubo might not be great at studying cultural subjects, he was definitely a quick learner in fighting techniques. He soon mastered the thrusting techniques, with the proper flair.
Tan Huajun didn’t do as well, clumsily wielding the vernier caliper. From a distance, he resembled a penguin swinging a hoe, particularly comical.
“Xiaoshan, help guide Technician Tan.”
Zhang Su rubbed his temples, slightly annoyed by Tan Huajun’s awkward posture. He was curious to see how this hefty woman would pierce a zombie with a steel rod, even suspecting she might be lying…
However, the zombie corpse by the flowerbed was indeed killed by a stab to the eye, which couldn’t be faked.
In the afternoon, everyone practiced using their weapons beside the convenience store, chanting and making noise.
Zhang Su used this time to learn in detail about Phoenix International District and Tan Huajun’s home situation.
The silent world seemed only to have the few of them left as humans. Suddenly, Zhang Su tensed up, and just as he was about to call everyone back to the convenience store to hide, an unexpected incident occurred!
In the apocalypse, the feasibility of plans substantially decreases due to too many unpredictable variables.
Zhang Su considered that some might pass by the gas station without noticing, enter to scavenge supplies, or even rob the gas station, but what was about to happen was beyond his imagination!
Just as everyone ran towards the side door of the convenience store, distant ear-piercing sounds of tires screeching echoed through the quiet streets, like the shriek of a ghost, making one’s heart pound.
“Quick, get inside!”
Seeing everyone pause, Zhang Su hurriedly urged them on.
“Oh my god!”
Being the last to enter the convenience store, Zheng Xinyu glanced towards the street and witnessed a terrifying scene!
After a series of car crashes, a burning GL8 appeared on the street in front of the gas station. The vehicle jerked wildly, attempting to cross the greenery belt towards the gas station but, for some unknown reason, overturned directly at the gas station’s exit!
“Ah, is anyone there? Help!”
A man, half-covered in blood, crawled out from the driver’s seat, screaming desperately while running towards the convenience store.
The man hadn’t noticed Zhang Su and his group; he merely sought to enter the shelter to save himself!
Unfortunately, his frantic screams aggravated the approaching zombies. Coupled with injuries from the crash, his unstable steps caused him to fall, and soon he was overwhelmed by zombies. Struggling was futile.
Boom!
Before the zombies could feast, the burning car erupted in flames, exploded as expected, and blew ten or more zombies away. Fortunately, it was far enough from the gas pump, or else the entire gas station would have taken off.
A series of events unfolded within half a minute, leaving Zhang Su and his companions huddled against the convenience store wall watching zombies gather with tingling scalps!
