Atticus's Odyssey: Reincarnated Into A Playground - Chapter 1340: God’s Chess

Chapter 1340: God’s Chess
A blinding light ignited between them the next moment, and from it a familiar furry creature emerged.
Atticus could recognize this creature as the same one that presided over his battle with Kale.
“The Great Verge has expressed interest in this unusual fight and would like to offer you a choice.”
Atticus narrowed his eyes. He glanced at Whisker, who shrugged and mouthed “he’s a crazy one”. He turned back to see Nerrot looking excited.
The furry creature shined its teeth, clearly loving its job.
“Usually, challenges in the outside world are settled in the arena of gods. But the Great Verge, in his boundless wisdom, has decided to host this one. What do you say?”
A smile had found its way to Nerrot’s lips. The very thought that the Great Verge was interested in this fight made him giddy.
Plus, it had been his plan all along! The Great Verge’s interest in Atticus during his fight with Kale was amongst the things he took note of.
“I accept.” Nerrot said, but the furry creature did not turn away from Atticus.
“The challenged has the final say.” It said.
Nerrot’s expression darkened. If Atticus refused, his opportunity would vanish. But he had nothing to worry about.
“I accept.”
“Good!” The furry creature grinned and clapped its hands. “Now, what are your terms?”
“I want his world.” Atticus said without hesitation. He left no room for misinterpretation.
The furry creature turned towards Nerrot. “Do you accept his terms Baron Nerrot? If you lose, you will relinquish your rights as a god, and hand over your world to god Atticus. Winning will grant you the same rights.”
Nerrot’s grin vanished. ’Looks like he learnt from Kale.’
Asking for his life doesn’t guarantee that Atticus would get his world should he win. The factions made sure of that.
’I need a count’s permission.’ Nerrot pondered on the matter for a moment.
“As long as he agrees to play my game.”
“What game?”
Atticus asked before the furry creature could finish speaking. He earned a glare from the creature but didn’t care.
“I call it, gods Chess.” Nerrot smiled. “Don’t worry, it’s fair to both sides. What do you say?”
“I’ll decide when I hear the rules.”
Nerrot smiled and quickly summarized the rules of the game to Atticus and when he was done, he observed Atticus carefully.
’Would he accept?’ He wondered. It was a game that required ingenuity rather than brute force.
’I can’t risk clashing head on.’ Nerrot had always considered himself someone who knew how to use his head well.
From the news, Atticus had defeated Kale. In a direct clash, Nerrot was sure he couldn’t withstand Atticus.
Clashing with him directly was suicide. Which was why he had devised this method. If Atticus accepted, it was his win.
“I accept.”
Nerrot couldn’t hide his delight. He reached to his will, and sent out his request through the Redflame will.
He needed the count to accept him wagering his world before he could proceed, though with everything, he was sure he would get the approval.
In the Crimson Ember Hall, Count Thane gazed at the unfolding scene silently. Having foreseen the events, he’d asked the marquis earlier if he should give the approval or not. But the response he received was that it was his call.
What it meant was quite simple, any screw up would fall on him and him alone. In fact, the marquis might even punish him for it.
Count Thane took a breath and decided to be more careful. He reached out to the viscount.
’What do you think?’
’Your eminence, this lowly one isn’t worthy of advising a great count.’
’Stop the bullshit and let me hear your true thoughts.’ He waited for a moment before adding. ’I won’t let it fall back on you.’
Viscount Merek cleared his throat as though that affirmation was what he had been waiting for.
’Of course, your eminence. As you’re aware, I’ve come to possess an oddly large number of kins. Each one has different talents and traits that made them stand out. For Nerrot, it’s his ingenuity and intellect. Considering the nature of the game, I believe he will win without a doubt.’
Count Thane went silent. He furrowed his eyebrows and made his decision in the next moment.
Nerrot received the approval almost instantly and he smiled. “Then I accept your terms.”
“Good!” The furry creature clapped. “Now, you have two minutes to select your partners and decide your respective roles.”
Atticus felt Ozeroth’s intense stare on him the next moment. If he didn’t know any better, he would think the proud man was begging.
He sighed. Who else was he going to select?
“Ozeroth.”
The proud man clenched his fist but made sure to hide his delight. Unfortunately it didn’t escape Whisker’s notice.
“You look like a loser who wasn’t picked last!” Whisker burst into laughter. Ozeroth seathed but made sure to bring himself under control.
“I want to be the attacker.”
Atticus stared at Ozeroth for a second before he shrugged. “Suit yourself.”
Two minutes passed in the next moment, and the two groups stood across from each other.
Ozeroth stood ahead Atticus, directly facing Nerrot. The warrior that had approached him earlier stood behind him.
“Alright!” The furry creature’s voice boomed. “I’ll explain the rules once so there are no mistakes. So listen.”
It waited for a moment and spoke.
“There are two roles; Attacker and Defender. The Attacker’s job is simple: hit the enemy Attacker. The Defender’s job is just as simple, protect your Attacker from getting hit.”
It raised a clawed finger.
“An attacker can only attack an attacker, never a defender. The attacks must be in the form of a willart, and any attack is allowed. An attacker is not allowed to ever defend or dodge. You can’t attack outside your turn either.”
“As for Defenders, to defend, they must copy the enemy Attacker’s Will Art exactly. If the Attacker fires a flame spear that freezes, you block with the same attack. If they throw a blade of ice, you match it with the same.”
“First team to land three clean hits on the opposing Attacker wins.”
