Chapter 181: Chapter 163: His Romantic Tribulation in This Life Might Cost Him His Life
Xiao Mo truly didn’t understand why this disciple from the Wanjian Sect was so fond of steamed buns.
But since it was her request, he had no objection.
Xiao Mo had the Imperial Kitchen prepare some steamed buns using the flesh of Fierce Beasts.
Although the Zhou Kingdom was only a minor Dynasty, procuring the flesh of low-tier Fierce Beasts was generally not a problem.
Before long, the steamed buns were delivered. Xiao Mo and Jiang Qingyi sat on the high dais, eating one bite at a time.
“Why do you keep staring at me?” Jiang Qingyi frowned.
“It’s nothing.” Xiao Mo shook his head. “I just feel that Fairy Jiang is a bit different from other cultivators.”
“How so?” Jiang Qingyi asked.
“Well… it’s hard to say…” Xiao Mo gathered his thoughts. “I just feel that you seem more like an ordinary woman, without the arrogance and aloofness of most cultivators. Your master must be a highly respected Sword Immortal.”
Hearing Xiao Mo’s words, Jiang Qingyi froze for a moment, her gaze fixed on him.
“Is something wrong?” Xiao Mo felt there was something strange in her eyes.
“It’s nothing.” Jiang Qingyi shook her head and continued to nibble on her steamed bun. “It’s just that what Your Majesty said reminded me of my master.”
“What kind of Sword Immortal is your master?” Xiao Mo asked, simply making conversation.
Jiang Qingyi’s hand tightened around the steamed bun.
Seeing her fall silent and frown, Xiao Mo had no idea how he had struck a nerve, so he decided to say no more.
“My master… his attainments in the Sword Dao are truly profound.”
Just as Xiao Mo was taking a bite of his bun, Jiang Qingyi began to speak slowly.
“Oh? Right.” Xiao Mo paused, then nodded in response. “I can certainly tell. As they say, a great master produces a worthy disciple.”
“In his entire life, I was the only disciple he ever took.”
Jiang Qingyi continued, seemingly lost in her memories.
“He took me in when I was homeless on the streets. Without him, I probably would have starved to death.
Anything I ever wanted, he would give me. Anything that he thought would benefit me, he would shove it all my way without a second thought.
But my master had one fatal flaw.
He was too kind.
So kind that he didn’t seem like a cultivator at all—not one who was supposed to be swift and decisive in killing.”
With that, Jiang Qingyi fell silent, simply lifting her head to look at Xiao Mo.
“Fairy Jiang? Is something the matter?” Xiao Mo asked, puzzled.
“It is nothing.”
Jiang Qingyi lowered her head.
’But in her mind, she couldn’t help but recall a certain summer day. I was clutching a steamed bun, cornered in a deserted, dead-end alley.
Just as the bun shop owner was about to hit me with a rolling pin, a man came over, grabbed his hand, and tossed a piece of silver at him.
He knelt down and held out his hand to me.
“My name is Xiao Mo. From now on, I’m your master. Go on, let’s hear you say it.”’
“Master…” Jiang Qingyi whispered, her voice as soft as the wind, audible only to herself.
“What did you say just now, Fairy Jiang?” Xiao Mo turned his head.
“Nothing.”
Jiang Qingyi shook her head and continued to nibble on her steamed bun.
…
THUD, THUD, THUD…
「In Tianji City.」
A Big Guy was walking down the city streets.
The Big Guy’s thirty-foot-tall frame drew stares from everyone.
They had never seen such a massive giant.
But what drew even more attention was the young girl sitting on the Big Guy’s shoulder.
The girl was exquisitely cute, like a porcelain doll, her little face still holding a bit of baby fat.
She wore a short skirt that ended just above her knees, revealing her pale calves. Her little feet swung back and forth adorably. A bell on her fair ankle jingled crisply with the movement.
The girl, however, had no manners. She ate her candied hawthorns while spitting out the seeds, all the while muttering, “This damn place never changes, no matter how long it’s been.”
Finally, the Big Guy, with the girl perched on his shoulder, arrived at the entrance to the City Lord’s Mansion of Tianji City.
“Greetings, Eldest Young Master! Greetings, Eldest Young Miss!”
Seeing the giant and the young girl, the disciples of Tianji City guarding the gate dared not tarry and hastily threw the gates open.
The girl leaped down from the Big Guy’s shoulder. Her bare, tender feet touched the ground, but not a single speck of dust clung to them.
The girl padded into the mansion on her little feet.
The Big Guy had to bend over to squeeze inside after her.
THUD, THUD, THUD…
In the courtyard, the City Lord of Tianji City—He Baihua—was in the middle of a divination when she felt the ground tremble. Even the tortoise shell within her array hopped slightly.
This drew a soft sigh from He Baihua, her tone laced with resignation.
He Baihua straightened up and looked to see her older sister and brother standing before her.
“Big Brother,” He Baihua said, smiling gently at the Big Guy.
“HROOOWL.”
The Big Guy, He Gang, grunted in acknowledgment. He then found an empty spot to sit, where he hugged his knees and remained perfectly still. He looked as meek as a child, likely because the last time he was here, he had ruined his sister’s flowers and made her angry.
He Baihua turned her gaze to her older sister, her expression one of mild exasperation.
To He Baihua, her older sister was the very definition of trouble.
“Sister, what brings you back to Tianji City?” He Baihua asked.
“I missed you. Can’t I come for a visit?”
He Yeye casually tossed the bamboo skewer, which stuck into the lawn. She then plopped down on a stone stool and poured herself a cup of tea, making herself right at home.
He Baihua shook her head, sat down beside her sister, and refilled her cup.
Although the two sisters looked remarkably alike, almost like identical twins, their personalities were polar opposites.
“If you have nothing important to say, Sister, I’m going back to my work,” He Baihua said, giving her sister an exasperated look.
“Not so fast,” He Yeye said, shaking her head. “I need to ask you something first.”
“Go on,” He Baihua replied. She knew her sister must have a reason for seeking her out.
“The Lord of the Four Seas, Bai Ruxue… she came to you for a divination about Xiao Mo, didn’t she?” He Yeye asked.
“She did,” He Baihua confirmed with a nod. “The Lord of the North Sea has already reached the Zhou Imperial City. She should have found him by now.”
“What about their fate in this life?” He Yeye asked. “Will they end up together this time?”
“That… is hard to say…” He Baihua looked troubled.
“Why is it hard to say?”
“He is entangled in so much karma that I cannot see his fate clearly. Even if I could, I wouldn’t dare speak of it. But one thing is certain.”
He Baihua shook her head.
“His romantic entanglements in this life… they might just get him killed.”
