Chapter 1805: Planning What To Do Next
—–
After enjoying a lavish breakfast that felt more like a grand feast combining all three meals, everyone sat back satisfied and brimming with energy. Their Soul Stomachs were filled with the most delicious food they had ever tasted in the Netherworld, overflowing with power.
“Thank you, Elayne. Your cooking truly matches your beauty—it is without equal,” Blank said with a calm smile, his eyes gleaming softly. “I wish we could have you here every day, every week, every month, every year. Why not stay? If it is the people you protect that concern you, we can swiftly build a safe haven for them. Our territory is vast, after all.”
“I agree!” Chalk nodded eagerly. “We could construct a villa for all your Undead and simply claim they are our workers. You could expand your farm here and live with us!”
“Hm…” Silvester remained silent.
As their father, he understood the risks of Elayne and her group lingering too long, especially with a child like Lisette involved. Yet he also recognized her immense value. In his mind, the perfect outcome would be her marrying his son, but that seemed impossible given her deep bond with Mark.
“Oh, you two, thank you for your kindness,” Elayne replied gently. “But I cannot stay. I promised my people I would find them a truly safe home. It might be secure at first, but eventually something could go wrong. I do not want to bring any more trouble upon you.”
Blank and Chalk had anticipated her refusal, yet they had hoped nonetheless. Blank accepted it with a nod. Chalk, however, cried out in frustration.
“Aw, come on, Elayne! Just stay with us! We will protect you and give you anything you desire. We will spoil you endlessly!” Chalk pleaded, her voice tinged with anger. “And then, when I venture out, we could journey together—just the two of us! What do you say?”
“I appreciate the sentiment, but I must decline,” Elayne shook her head firmly. “This decision…” She glanced at Mark, Yaga, Norman, Sailor, Shade, and Lisette, her thoughts turning to all those she sheltered. “Is not mine alone to make. When so many lives rest on your shoulders, every choice carries great weight.”
“Ah…” Chalk murmured, her expression falling into quiet dejection. “I guess that means no…”
“I knew you would refuse the moment I offered,” Blank admitted with a bitter smile. “Yet hearing you speak so earnestly about your people only deepens my admiration. What a remarkable woman you are, Elayne. Mark, you are extraordinarily fortunate to hold a place in her heart—perhaps the luckiest man alive. So ensure you never disappoint her, and always strive to bring her joy.”
“…!” Mark tensed, a flicker of madness rising as irritation surged within him. But when Elayne gently placed her delicate hand over his large, fiery one, calm washed over him. His flames shifted from raging red to a serene ghostly blue. “I know. I know that better than anyone. Even after death, Elayne remains extraordinary. I could scarcely believe it when she returned my feelings in life. Ever since, I have worked every day to prove myself worthy of her love.”
“Oh, Mark…” Elayne smiled warmly, squeezing his hand.
“…I see,” Blank murmured, his bitter smile deepening as he accepted his long-defeated hope.
“Brother…” Chalk noticed the faint pain in her brother’s usually impassive eyes. It was perhaps the first time she had seen him like this. Silently, she reached out and rested her hand on his shoulder.
Blank, ever composed and expressionless, glanced at his sister. Though he said nothing, his eyes conveyed quiet gratitude for her comfort.
Sensing the heavy atmosphere, Silvester and Yaga swiftly moved to lighten it.
“Ahem, well, were you not planning to show Elayne around the city?” Silvester asked. “They leave in two days, so perhaps you should make the most of the time.”
“Yes, I agree,” Yaga nodded.
“I was hoping to explore the caves, if that is acceptable?” Elayne suggested.
“That is an excellent idea,” Blank replied. “The Cavity Caves within Titan Tooth Mountain would be a memorable experience for everyone. Especially since you recently changed classes, it could help you all level up.”
“Sure! We can guide you, ensure everything goes smoothly, and even enjoy some sightseeing,” Chalk added brightly. “There is a lovely hotel on the mountain where we could spend the night.”
“Sounds wonderful!” Elayne agreed with a nod. “Before we depart, though… Shade, may I speak with you privately?”
“Hm?” Shade, who had been weaving cursed energies into delicate threads to refine his mastery, turned his glowing red eyes toward her. He nodded. “Ok.”
She led him to a quiet room and explained that her Cursed Runes had reached full growth. She wished to evolve them to a higher tier and asked if it was possible.
“Possible, yes. Very possible. Impressive. First time seeing them ready. I have not upgraded before. Good practice. I will do it,” Shade answered in his distinctive manner.
“Thank you so much, Shade. I will make sure to compensate you,” Elayne said gratefully.
“No need. Elayne does so much for everyone. Free,” Shade replied humbly.
“Aw, you are a wonderful friend!” Elayne exclaimed, pulling him into a quick hug.
The shadow recoiled in panic at the contact, flailing his long arms and fingers while making flustered noises.
“N-No touchy…” he muttered.
“Heheh, sorry, sorry,” Elayne laughed lightly, scratching the back of her head. “Anyway, can we start now? Will it take long?”
“I am ready. Shade has practiced. Shade is fast. It will be quick,” he assured her. “Elayne, sit. Reveal soul.”
“Ok!”
Elayne settled onto the empty bed and extended her Consciousness and Soul Aura beyond her Undead form.
Shade’s eyes widened in awe. He beheld a breathtaking fusion of powers and essences swirling together in perfect harmony.
It was…
“Life and Death meeting… like sun and moon in eclipse…” he whispered softly. “What a beautiful soul…”
“Heheh, thank you,” Elayne chuckled warmly. “I believe my curses are over there?”
Her consciousness drifted toward a darker region of her soul, where the three Cursed Runes resided. Black roots spread from them, yet they harmed her not at all—instead granting greater strength.
“I see. Will upgrade now. Please stay still.”
Shade’s fingers danced, summoning twin needles of pure shadow. He delicately adjusted the runes’ structure, infusing them with his own cursed energy.
Gradually, he unlocked their deeper potential, expanding each rune to contain more power while enhancing their effects and abilities.
The process took twenty minutes per rune—an hour in total.
It was agonizing for Elayne. Each expansion required Shade to pierce her soul with those sharp needles, a pain akin to tattooing amplified a hundredfold.
“I am done. Is Elayne okay? Sorry. Not experienced enough,” Shade apologized, noticing her pained groans.
“Ouch… Ugh… No, it is fine,” Elayne managed a strained smile as she sensed her newly strengthened Cursed Runes. “Thank you, Shade. Let us see.”
She steadied herself, drawing Spiritual Energy from her Domain to soothe the lingering ache in seconds.
Then she examined her soul. The three Cursed Runes now pulsed with dark radiance, writhing with shadow roots composed of countless smaller runes.
Each was a mighty Curse etched into her very being, fueled by her Undead nature and the deep, dark emotions gathered within her heart.
