Dark Magus Returns - Chapter 1595: The Ultimate Defense

Chapter 1595: The Ultimate Defense
As always with an intense fight between large forces, a series of key duels were erupting across several different sectors of the Underside. But in the maze-like, shadowed streets of the underground city, it was the arrival of the Masked Men that was causing the most devastating trouble.
As one of these elite figures landed squarely in the main streets, dozens of nearby mages, fueled by desperation and courage, immediately charged, determined to overwhelm him. The Masked Man didn’t even flinch. He simply lifted the palms of his hands in both directions, and a blinding, searing flood of yellow energy erupted. The wave of power was so massive, so immediate, that it consumed the entirety of the charging forces, turning them into little more than dust and vapor where they stood.
Yet, even seeing the catastrophic annihilation of their comrades, more Underside mages who were currently unengaged surged forward, eager to gain any possible edge. Those who were hidden on the precarious roof tops came out of the shadows, one with a flaming Molotov cocktail he had desperately prepared, ready to throw the crude weapon.
“Don’t bother with that thing!” a sharp, clear voice ordered from behind him.
The mage barely had time to look over his shoulder before he saw Beatrix, her figure silhouetted against the dark cavern roof. With her light-colored hair, which was subtly tinted red at the back, whipping around her face, she held her signature sword high, ready to drop down and swing.
Before Beatrix could execute her plan, the Masked Man saw her. He moved one palm toward her, and it began to glow, instantly firing out a beam of condensed light. The flash was so brilliant that it temporarily blinded observers and could be seen cutting through the gloom from distant parts of the Underside.
However, the speed and power of the ranged light attack meant nothing to Beatrix. She executed a quick, precise movement, and phased through the weaponized energy beam as if it were harmless smoke. She materialized on the ground right next to the man, her sword already arcing downward for a killing blow.
She was mid-swing when she noticed the Masked Man’s entire body suddenly begin to shine bright, illuminating the cramped street with a blinding, hostile glow. Then, like a sudden, shocking explosion contained within a sphere, she was hit by a tremendous concussive force. Her whole body was violently flung backward. The raw, terrifying power was so great that she continued to soar through the air, completely out of control, until she finally fell off a low ledge and plunged into a shallow stream of filthy, dirty water.
The Masked Man quickly jumped from his original position, landing with disturbing grace in the middle of the same stream. But utilizing his inherent Light Magic, he instantly repelled the contaminated water, pushing the dirty mess aside and creating a perfectly dry, clean circle around himself.
The handful of Underside members who had witnessed the exchange quickly ran over to the stream’s edge. They could see Beatrix struggling to stand, her light clothes now covered in the disgusting muck and refuse from the murky water.
Damn it, Beatrix thought, the physical pain of the blast secondary to the sting of her failure. I thought I could have gotten him by surprise and attacked him when his guard was down, but that burst of power just now was overwhelming. No wonder Raze said to be careful with them. They’re clearly stronger than the last Cerberus Guild masters I went up against.
Just as Beatrix was mentally preparing a new strategy, several glowing, small balls of pure light appeared just behind the Masked Man’s shoulders, almost forming ethereal wings. Hundreds of them materialized in front of him, and that’s when the high-speed beams of attack began to shoot out. It was the exact same star-like laser barrage that was currently pinning down Liam on the far side of the Underside.
Beatrix had her own way of defending against this devastating ranged assault. Her sword began to glow with intense magical power. She struck the ground with the tip, then rapidly moved the blade in a crescent-like, defensive shape.
Her hand movements were moving at an immense speed, a mesmerizing blur of defense. She was blocking nearly every single incoming hit; in fact, she was blocking all of them. The sound of the lasers impacting her sword was a relentless, high-pitched ping-ping-ping, a terrifying rhythm of destruction.
There was one critical, inherent issue, however. This was a sophisticated ultimate defense technique from her clan, focusing all mana into an immovable shield. While locked like this, she was utterly unable to move. Fighting against a flawless, endless ranged attacker, how was she ever meant to close the distance and attack?
That strategic quandary didn’t stop the others who were watching from being completely overwhelmed by her display of skill.
“She must be the most talented magic swordsman in existence,” one of the local mages commented breathlessly.
“Right, but she’s still going up against an impossible opponent,” another insisted, his voice panicked. “We need to do whatever we can to help her!”
The Underside members readily agreed, those gathering makeshift weapons as well as those who could only use rudimentary magic. They waited for a coordinated signal, then unleashed every piece of weaponry and spell they had simultaneously. A large, diverse array of different, weak attacks went out and impacted the Masked Man all at the same time.
The flurry of attacks allowed a momentary break in the laser barrage that had been pinning Beatrix. She didn’t waste a single millisecond, charging forward with desperate speed during this brief respite.
If I’m right, Beatrix determined, focusing her eyes on the target, there isn’t a chance that these guys are going to be weaker than the other Cerberus Guild members I went against. Which means those little scattered attacks they just hit him with would have done absolutely nothing!
When the lingering dust and magical effects of the combined attack cleared, her fear was confirmed. There wasn’t a single mark on the Masked Man’s body, and his form was already lighting up, charging power for another massive explosion.
I hope the others will be able to get through this! Beatrix thought, steeling herself for the inevitable impact, knowing this was going to be a tough battle.
