D.E.M.O.N.S: Getting Summoned Weekly isn't so Bad - Chapter 1929 Ice Spice

Chapter 1929: Chapter 1929 Ice Spice
— Kat —
Pushing open the next set of doors saw them lead into a giant room with a ceiling far higher than should be possible. All to contain the monster. It was a giant titan of frost, claws outstretched and reaching towards the door as if it was moments away from slicing through them. Its body was thick and blocky in some areas and thin in others. Its arms and hands stretched out like putty, the ends of its fingers were barely wisps of ice and looked ready to snap at the slightest touch while its legs and torso were squat blocky things. Heck, it didn’t have any feet.
Kat would be more scared though, if it wasn’t for the giant chains holding it in places. Dozens of them all stabbing right through the creature, running from floor to ceiling and imbued with a massive amount of fire magic. Where they cut through the ice monster it would crack, sizzle, pop, and steam. It was a constant barrage of sound and the water it was giving off would pour down into a large grate beneath its feet.
“We can’t fight that,” said Hedera firmly as she started to carefully back up.
“Why?” asked Kat as she started to do the same.
“It’s something known as a ’Primordial of Ice’. Which… well… they’re not necessarily the strongest monsters ever but they are nearly impossible to kill or trap. I have no idea how Thyme managed it. They’re closer to forces of nature then a monster…” whispered Hedera.
Kat nodded along and reached for the door. Carefully she shut it… but the moment the doors clicked shut? They started to fall forward. Kat panicked, reaching out for the handle, just barely manage to get her hand around the large door knockers in an attempt to keep them in place… except the door was happy to swing. Instead of remaining locked together, the doors swung open, just a tad, enough for the frame to slam into the floor.
Kat gulped but when a moment past and nothing seemed to happen, Kat had thought they were safe. Then the staircase behind them started to collapse and Kat knew something had gone very wrong. Worse, there was a great screech, like somebody was using glass nails to mark a chalkboard as one of the monster’s hands just sloughed off onto the ground, separated from the main body.
“FUCK!” hissed Hedera. “We’re going to need to fight that,”
“What? Why? The stairs are in an awkward place but we can certainly make push through the rubble and then I can fly us up!” countered Kat.
“We can’t let it get outside though,” sighed Hedera. “If that fragment makes it to the surface? Where there’s a constant snowstorm raging? Then it’s going to return to its full power and I really don’t know what would happen to… well everything in this biome. Us included. I’m not even sure your cold resistance would be enough,”
“And you think we can beat it?” asked Kat worriedly. She wasn’t entirely sure she believed Hedera’s claim about it being able to freeze her… but if she was right that was a major issue. For now, it seemed to just be stumbling around like a drunk polar bear. Wobbling from side to side, breaking down into nothing and then reforming. It clearly hadn’t gotten a hold of itself yet and it was giving them time to plan. Part of Kat wanted to just rush in… but Hedera was remaining in place, she hadn’t even raised her bow yet, so there was probably a reason.
“Perhaps? I can’t be sure but I know for a fact we can’t just… leave it?” stated Hedera.
“Right… then how do we kill it?” asked Kat.
“I don’t think we can do that. I… I think you’ll need to grab those chains and bind the smaller one. There are a few running free. Or maybe you can try impaling it back on a few of them? Not sure how well that will work?” offered Hedera.
Kat sighed, “Alright fine, let’s say that works… why are we chatting now instead of attacking?”
“It’s still trying to stabilise. If you attack it… well it’s going to attack right back. That’s one of the few things I know about these. We should probably attack it anyway soon… but yeah that will probably stabilise it early. Which might be a good thing for us? Sorry I really don’t know…” admitted Hedera.
“Alright fine, the basics. What do I need to be aware of, and what do I need to do?” asked Kat.
“Well… it’s made of semi-fluid ice in this case. It’s got complete control over its body and breaking it into pieces will just spawn additional, smaller copies. The main body can theoretically regenerate infinitely so you DON’T want to do that. If it does happen, you need to slam them back together to try and trick it into reforming into one entity. Um… its not instant though so you can break off say an arm then attack.
“Though don’t think that will slow it. It’s closer to a slime then the ice golem it looks like. The fire chains SEEM to inhibit it but I don’t really know why. Maybe it’s the heat? Maybe not? Oh, and don’t use any ice on it. That will obviously be bad… and your water form might have issues as well. I’m going to be using fire arrows where I can, Lily should focus on hemming it in,” explained Hedera rapidly. “Also we need to started attacking, like right now.”
Kat didn’t need to be told twice, dashing off at full speed and summoning her fans. The rippling ice didn’t react at all until she was in striking distance, then it immediately went on the offensive. There was no windup, just a large number of spikes exploding out of the creature and heading straight for Kat. There was too many to dodge properly, and for all that Kat could stop on a dime, that still wasn’t quite enough here. Flaring her wings would just give it more surface area to attack from.
Kat sliced at the spines near her most delicate organs… so really just her head at this point. Instead of slicing through cleanly or cracking on contact, the ice slowed her arms right down and seamed to stick in place. It was a bit like fighting Mai the slime, except the ice here felt almost non-Newtonian, getting tougher as she pressed harder into it.
Kat couldn’t properly examine the feeling, as while she did stop a few spines around her head, mostly by disrupting and blocking them, the remainder were able to stab at her in a bunch of places across her body. The first few simply squished against her body, not tough enough to cut through her skin, but then the next few to make contact dug in deeper, before the last few, those hitting her sides and arms managed to cleave right through her body.
*It’s getting sharper!* Kat dug her tail into the ground and forcefully twisted herself, breaking apart the weird ice as she did so. More than she wanted was splattered against the ground as the rest retracted back into the main mass. Kat wasn’t sure what her first priority should be… until an arrow hit its side and exploded into a ball of fire causing the ice to steam, spit, and scream.
While that was happening Kat used her fans to gather up the ice on the ground. It was panicking and twitching as she did this, and seemed to happily recombine with even just a bit of direction. It was a stark contrast to the rest of the body, or even the fact it had been trying to kill her just a few moments ago. As Kat gathered it all up into a hand, she considered if throwing it all back into the burning monster was really the right thing to do…
Then it turned into a ball of spikes, shearing through skin and muscle in her hand and fingers, only breaking against her bones, but even then it wasn’t a painless experience. Kat launched the thing into the fire, and a second scream echoed for out for a moment before it all came back together. Kat took the chance to kick it, using both feet and trying to send it flying into the foot of the original, larger ice primordial.
It was like kicking molasses. Goey, slow, and ultimately useless. Kat found her legs quickly being covered by the ice, and while it wasn’t too cold for her… it quickly became a problem when she felt it almost instantly start eating away at her legs. Kat flapped her wings, straining against the hold it had on her. In the end, Kat decided she’d rather gain a bit of reprieve and swiped her fans through the monster, on either side of her legs while pulling back. It sent bits of the monster flying, something she’d likely pay for later but it disrupted things enough to free her legs. Kat quickly brushed them off as she flew backwards, flinging a mixture of blood and ice goop onto the floor. That would need to be dealt with shortly.
