D.E.M.O.N.S: Getting Summoned Weekly isn't so Bad - Chapter 1974 Barrels of Fun

Chapter 1974: Chapter 1974 Barrels of Fun
— Kat —
“So, at the end of the day, what does that mean for me and Hedera?” asked Kat.
“It means that capturing the thieves or confirming their face is MUCH more important… and also potentially impossible. If they’re really connected, especially connected enough to share info… they might decide that hitting the same target they’ve been hitting for so long, is now too risky of a target. That would make it much harder, if not impossible to catch them.
“But I can’t really justify getting more people on it because there just isn’t enough strong combatants to spare them for night watch duty, especially when it’s possible nothing will happen and they’d need to be alert the entire shift,” explained Steel.
“And we don’t need to be similarly alert?” asked Kat.
Steel made a concerned looking face. “I would hope you were somewhat alert, but with three of you watching the place I imagine it’s not as difficult. I can’t just put together a team of heavy hitters. Assuming you count Lily as one, which you seem to, your team already constitutes a huge amount of combat power within the city,” explained Steel.
*Funny he mentioned I ’seem’ to count Lily as one. Because of the restrictions, she probably IS the single strongest thing in the city. In theory. I’m probably still harder to ’kill’ because I don’t think my regeneration is limited at all, but the point stands. I suppose, if we weren’t following this ’storyline’ we also wouldn’t have access to Ramor’s stockpile. I wonder if choosing to fight the guards would’ve ended with us getting contacted by the Haleblooms or something like that?*
Kat nodded, “Alright so, what does that MEAN though? Do you still want us on night duty?”
Steel nodded before interrupting himself halfway and holding up a hand to signal he’d changed his mind. “Actually… hmm… I was going to just say yes, because you are useful in that position but I’m wondering if I should try and have you all better rested for other things… hmm… actually, no. Here’s what I’m going to do. You stay here with Ramor and watch the prisoner. I’ll even pay you extra orbs for your time if Ramor’s stockpile isn’t enough.”
Ramor scoffed by Steel continued. “I’m going to go speak with the King and whatever advisors are available. See if I can justify rushing the activation of the-you-know-what. If that can be finalised today, or early tomorrow. Investigations can be done and then we can make the announcement. That MIGHT head off any major confrontations… I can only hope they agree with me.”
Steel nodded at then went to leave and Ramor laughed, causing him to turn back. “Ah yes, didn’t even bother to ask my opinion. I agree with it, but I just want to make it known you should’ve asked,”
Steel turned back. “I could’ve made it an order as well.” Ramor shrugged but didn’t say anything. “Fine, I’ll admit I’m still a bit wired up. I’m also really hoping to prevent what could be the largest riot in the city’s history. Especially over something we MIGHT have solve. Though… be aware that breaking the girl out might or might not happen. I’d guess the Haleblooms will come armed with words rather than weapons but… who says they’re the ones coming?”
Steel then bolted for the door off to the castle at his best pace. Kat turned back to Ramor. “So what do you think is going to happen?”
“Well, I’m betting that something, probably you and your group, has shaken up the leadership of the city and they are once again considering the idea of letting people leave. It’s been brought up before and gone nowhere really because everyone that wants to leave, also might want to come back some day.
“If they just wanted to leave and never return, well, that’s been an option for a while. It was never legal sure but people have done it plenty of times. Often leaving behind others to be punished, arguably in their stead, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. What this change is? I don’t know. I really don’t see them ever opening the gates to the city, but I also don’t see them opening some mining tunnels up. The safety hazards of sending people through those regular would already be a nightmare,” considered Ramor.
Kat waited for Ramor to continue. As she did so Angie was off to the side slowly trying to work on the mess that she considered hair. It wasn’t going well, because Angie would start, yawn, get distracted and then ’start’ on a different bit of hair instead of finishing the one she was on. So it just made things look worse, at least in Kat’s opinion. “They might have teleporters,” suggested Angie out of the blue.
Ramor nodded. “The technology was banned research for a long time… for obvious reasons. Though I’m sure some were still working on it,” Ramor turned to Kat. “DO NOT confirm our suspicions. It would do us no good if you did. Still… it seems likely that either you have something, or you know of a teleporter in the Trapmaster’s trials.”
*It’s shockingly close to correct all things considered.*
“Anyway,” said Ramor interrupted Kat’s thoughts. “Let’s go to the vault! I wouldn’t want you to have issues if something comes up and you need to rush off.”Kat nodded and hopped up, with Angie hopping up alongside them. Ramor didn’t seem surprised as the three of them headed out. Kat glanced at Angie to see if she would follow them… and she did. From one end of the base to the other where Ramor pushed aside a counter to reveal a trapdoor. When he opened it, Angie came along to. Ramor took the ladder normally, Kat jumped down, and Angie lowered herself using smoke. The room they settled into looked like a pretty normal storage room… if you ignored the giant door on the back wall.
So Kat had to ask. “Um… why is Angie also here?”
“To open the vault? You need at least two registered people to open it, and it then logs who does it,” answered Ramor. “Why?” he added after a few extra moments.
“Oh well, I didn’t know why she was following and you weren’t really reacting to her and I can see through illusions. Plus with all this… everything right now I thought it was better to mention it then not. No offence Angie,” explained Kat.
“Meh,” shrugged Angie while Ramor nodded.
“It likely is best you mentioned it. While Angie’s presence IS necessary in this case I gave no indication of it so yes, better safe then sorry. Being able to see through illusions is quite useful. Especially something so automatic,” added Ramor.
“Most of the time sure,” agreed Kat. “BUT it also means I can’t see them even when I want to. Like, if someone is using them to tell a story or to make a fancy looking piece of art. It’s always on and if you can turn it off I’ve not figured out how.”
“Ah, I suppose that could be inconvenient,” mumbled Ramor as he placed his hand on the wall to the side of the vault. Angie did the same on the opposite side… though slightly lower than where Ramor was holding his hand. After a few moments there was a shattering effect as a blue particle effects seemed to drift off the vault door.
“For example, that was the illusion over the vault door shattering,” added Ramor. “Something you probably weren’t meant to see before,”
“Ah,” intoned Kat. “I did see the illusion breaking, sort of. I think… but yeah I could see the door the entire time.”
Ramor rolled his eyes and placed his hands on the large wheel that acted as the doorknob and locker for the vault. Ramor didn’t just spin it one way. Instead, he had to hit things in sequence. Kat could hear a clear ’click’ every time it settled into the correct position. The code was actually somewhat complex, with some full spins, some spins backwards and then forwards again. It was all over the place.
Eventually the door opened to reveal a lot of safety boxes of all sides… as well as a large number of barrels just on the ground everywhere taking up space. “What’s with the barrels? They seem so out of place,”
“They are,” agreed Ramor. “It’s where we keep the orbs you’re looking for. They are technically something that we should store in the vault, but if we filled up our safe boxes with them we’d have been out of space years ago. Now they just sit in those barrels there. Feel free to take a whole barrel or two if you want,”
Kat gulped. She had no idea how many orbs were in those barrels… but it was a lot. “I… I guess I’ll just take the one? I’d love as many as I can carry but the storage bracelet I have just wastes them if you put a charged one inside. Well, no it puts it towards filling things up, but it will happily eat as many as you give it to far lesser effects and I wouldn’t want to have a spare barrel around.”
