Chapter 2077: Chapter 2077 A Sore Throat Part 2
— Kat —
It turns out, when you’re taring someone’s throat out for a medical procedure you can’t just get straight to it. The group had moved into the kitchen where there was a nice big table. Lin cast a few spells to disinfect the area. How that counted as a healing spell, Kat wasn’t sure but she supposed it was in a way making the area safer to heal in. Kat wondered if it worked on curses as well as bacteria, and what difference there was in a world like this.
Appoline did lie down on the table for a bit… before getting right back up and glaring at everyone. “Can we just get this over with?” asked Appoline.
“This is more complicated than you might think Little Apple,” said Lin with a slightly patronising smile as if she was talking to a small child. Appoline’s eye twitched a bit at the attitude but carefully calmed herself down, making sure not to rise to any bait. “Kat has to make sure not to get your spin, but she can’t leave any of that stuff in your neck either and I think it extends nearly that far. The inside is coated quite well.”
Appoline sighed but didn’t complain. Kat meanwhile asked, “Would it be better to use like… a knife or something?” Kat decided halfway through the sentence to grab a meat cleaver for effect. Appoline wasn’t watching her properly and couldn’t react, but Lin got a grin on her face so it was probably worth it. Lily had been left in the corner for the moment. No sense in risking her girlfriend getting covered in blood during her sleep.
“Probably not,” answered Lin. “We’d need one that was essentially the perfect size if we want to do this in one smooth stroke. Something less precise might be possible but the issue with that is time. Remember that Apple here needs to breath so taking too long to carefully extract the stuff could kill her all the same. Even if I perfectly heal her up in an instant, which isn’t certain, there will still be a lot of blood. Carving away slowly just means more blood and more time not breathing.”
“So I really am just gonna like…” Kat made a grasping motion and then yanked away to show she was going to just… well rip someone’s throat out. Kat just didn’t want to say it more then necessary. “There’s REALLY no better way?”
“In normal circumstances I’d expect there to be but not here. You need to ensure you get all of the alchemical gunk on her throat out of the way asap, and a bit of extra damage isn’t going to be a problem. In fact, depending on how the wound looks under that plastic it might be better for Little Apple if it’s fresh. Things tend to heal better when they are,” explained Lin.
Kat glanced worriedly over at Appoline who seemed to be doing breathing exercises to calm herself down. “Should I brew some pain relieving potions first?” asked Appoline.
“Do you have the ingredients or the time for that?” asked Lin.
Appoline sighed, “Not for the good ones. The weaker ones probably won’t help much with something as painful as this. I can’t believe I’m going along with it.”
“Well… if you’ve got an alternative I’m all ears,” said Lin with a kind smile. Somehow, it still felt cold looking at her though.
Appoline just muttered nonsense under her breath and sat on the edge of the table. Seeing this, Kat sighed and turned to Lin. “So, is there anything I need to be aware of when I do this?”
“Well, the way I see it you have two main ways to go about this. The first is grabbing the stuff sealing her neck, and sort of…” Lin showed her hands rotating around each other, the same action you’d do if you wanted to quickly wrap cables around your arms. “Keep pulling it until it can’t stretch anymore. Don’t just run back because I’ve got no idea how far away that’ll take you but the answer is probably too far and I’d be really annoyed if it got caught on a wall or something. I’d need you right there to react to things.
“The other way is if you just…” Lin mimed forming a claw, much like Lily’s shadow ones and just ripped her hand away from her neck. “Unlike whatever Appoline is using as a replacement, real skin doesn’t stretch that well. Your nails and a bit of force should do it considering you’re a demon. It’s more brutal… but swifter and I’m not sure if trying to stretch the stuff out will be painful at all.”
“What I’m hearing is that I really just have to rip out her throat. Still,” sighed Kat.
“Pretty much,” admitted Lin.
“Right, so can we get this done before I start to freak out more? Breathing exercises only work so long and I don’t even remember how long left I have before the thing fails,” grumbled Appoline.
Kat glanced at Lin who returned her look with a nod. Kat sighed and moved forward as Appoline lay down on the table. Kat frowned at this for a few moments before glancing at Lin, who raised a questioning eyebrow. “I honestly think this might be easier for me if she’s standing up…” explained Kat.
“And it’s easier for me, and likely her if she’s laying down. Even if the table isn’t the best,” countered Lin.
Kat sighed upon hearing that… but considering she was about to rip Appoline’s throat out the least Kat could do was make sure that she was comfortable as possible during the process. Nodding at Appoline she raised her hand and pushed as much demonic energy into it as she could manage. The bracelet on her hand seemed to be rattling and Kat was sure it would restrict her… but she needed to be at her best. If that required to push the bracelet a bit, so be it.
Appoline visibly gulped before settling back into rhythmic breathing. Lin summoned up a spell sigil, priming it to go off in an instant. Once it was ready Kat saw no reason to wait longer and swiped her hand at Appoline’s throat, making sure to target lower down then she would normally to get all of the stuff.
As Kat’s hand made contact the world seemed to slow. She’d torn into things before… but never with such visceral awareness of the process. Kat felt the moment that her fingers started to press into flesh, and her nails started to cut through it. The nails simply gave her a bit more purchase when she dug her fingers in further. Kat felt almost like she was going to throw up at the sensation, and the worst part was yet to come. When her fingers transitioned from flesh, to something strange and squishy, and then further on to open air, it was with the understanding that was only because they’d made it through someone’s throat.
Kat continued the swipe, keeping her hand gripping the dripping meat of Appoline’s throat and trying not to think too much about things. If it was just the weird almost plastic goop that was keeping her throat in place it would’ve been better but Kat had to ensure that she got everything. She could feel the blood and other crap intimately as she watched it all in slow motion.
Appoline couldn’t stop herself reaching up to claw at Kat’s arm but with everything else she could barely feel it. Appoline seemed to have enough awareness left to not actually grab the arm of slow it down but her nails were trying to find purchase on Kat’s skin.
The motion continued and the wet mass was once a throat was barely hanging by a threat. Kat wanted to just keep going, to be done with this… but she knew it was a potential risk not to do this properly and her second hand had been ready. As her first pulled away and the whole thing threatened to pull Appoline along or take more then needed, her second hand slid upwards, slicing off the flap of skin remaining on the other side.
Kat’s finger nail glided through the muscle blood and skin, catching somewhat on the stretch substance but pulling it along for the ride. It had been mostly removed already and simply ensuring the rest of it came along wasn’t too hard. The stuff inside the throat wasn’t bonded quite as thoroughly as the stuff on the edges, and so finally, the obstruction was cleared and Kat felt awful.
It had only been a second, maybe two. Kat had been fast, fast as she possible could be with her limitations but from her perspective it had taken much, much longer. Lin started the healing as soon as she could but it didn’t make it any easier to look at Appoline as that was going on… nor did Kat know what to do with the gunk in her hands. She wanted to hurl it away… but to where exactly? And besides, Appoline might just be crazy enough to keep it as a sample to test.
