D.E.M.O.N.S: Getting Summoned Weekly isn't so Bad - Chapter 2126 Munching Greens

Chapter 2126: Chapter 2126 Munching Greens
— Green —
First order of business, move away from the fight. Green ensured that she was able to quietly move away from the golem combat, if it could even be called that at this point. It was closer to interpretive dance with two unwilling participants, two dogs, and three actors. Regardless, the last thing Green wanted was for any of them to react to her leaving. Any of them spotting her would be bad, so Green ensured that her steps were light and that she used a few items to clean away her scent after making a few streets distance.
It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it would help muddle anyone trying to track her. She didn’t have enough to stop a proper effort, especially not if they knew she was there… but if they hadn’t even started looking? All traces in that area should be gone in about an hour, perhaps two if it wasn’t all that windy.
Once Green had made some distances, she started to be more proactive looking for food. Timmy was regularly scent out to check random houses for EDIBLE food or monsters that might be worth fighting and grilling. Her feelings on not finding anything during the first few waves of searches was a bit mixed. On the one hand, hunger was still gnawing at her stomach. On the other hand the risk of someone spotting her cooking the food went down the further away she got from the fight.
With Timmy also not being the fastest or the best at random spot checks, Green added in a few of her own where she’d duck into the houses and quickly rummage through the kitchen. It took no time at all, and was always disappointing… but it did allow her to realise that Timmy was probably checking the entire house top to bottom when ordered, not just the likely places for food to be stored.
*Which is annoying, possibly wasting time and just not very efficient but it’s also not like I know how to explain it better. I can’t just say ’the kitchen’ because Timmy might take that too literally. ’Kitchen Cupboards’ might work better but there’s also the cellars that sometimes show up, or just a set of basement stairs somewhere else in the house. At that point I guess just leaving the commands as they are is fine. The fact Timmy seems to understand ’edible’ is already a blessing really.*
So with that settled Green continued as she was. Checking random houses for food while directing Timmy to do the same and moving further away from the fight. She was also moving towards one of the main buildings she hadn’t already explored. There was some risk that Long had been there already, and that it was where the golems came from… but that was simply a risk she had to take. Not foolishly. If possible they’d be avoided, but if she needed to deal with one to get some food that was an acceptable compromise.
There were few things Green managed to stumble on in her explorations that were… disturbingly close to being acceptable food. She wasn’t even that deep into being hungry really. The first one was a bunch of dried meat in a cellar. The preservation charms hadn’t been destroyed, and it looked mostly edible… but Green wasn’t keen enough to try them when she could see a visible layer of dust coating the lot. Even assuming for some magical reason it was edible, it wouldn’t be healthy. Probably.
The next temptation came in the form of Timmy directing her to a bunch of bug monsters. It was a small nest of them in one of the houses. They were living in the walls and… well they really weren’t any bigger then normal bugs. The only reason she knew they were monsters at all was that Timmy had directed her towards them, and when she got too close they spat out some sort of acid cloud in her direction.
But frankly… it would take way too much effort to catch, cook and eat them for it to be worth it. That was certainly her reason and she was sticking too it. Plus, with the poisonous acid mist that they could shoot out there was probably some part of them that needed to be removed to make them edible and Green truly had no idea how she’d go about that. So once again, they got put to the side.
More biscuits showed up… and after the bug thing Green couldn’t resist having a small taste. Opening the box and visually looking the cookie over she couldn’t find anything too horrific about them… but when she but into the thing it crumbled to dust and started to rip the moisture from her mouth. Green started coughing as she dropped the thing and wiped the remains from her mouth before quickly getting out her flask to replace her missing fluids.
*What the heck was that?! That’s not a cookie that’s dehydration in a box! Were these ever edible? I’m not even sure if you’d gain calories from it with how much liquid it stole from me.* Green downed another long swig of water and tried to swallow. Little remnants of the cookie remained stubbornly stuck to various spots in her mouth and they almost burned with how dry they were making part of her mouth.
So another swig, and this time she spat it all out. With a focus on removing the offending bits. She also put the box back into the cupboard. *Maybe I should’ve just tried to fry the bugs.* Shaking that disturbing thought off Green once again continued on looking for food and finally, met with some success. Not ideal, not at all, but it WAS something.
Timmy directed her to a wall in a park that was completely covered in vines. There was a pipe and a slow trickle of water in it to indicate that it acted as a water feature at one point but the pond it connected to had mostly dried up. The important thing though, was that the vines growing on the wall were ones she recognised as being edible. Pretty poor from a taste perspective unless you processed them a good deal… but it was edible and it wasn’t the first time she’d had these vines.
Green didn’t even hesitate at this point, pulling a few bundles off and then starting to crunch her way through the end. They were exceptionally bitter as expected and very chewy in a way that wasn’t pleasant making the whole experience rather miserable but at least it was a familiar taste. You never really forgot the first time it was suggested to you as a ’quick snack for when you don’t have food on you’. The laughter afterwards made it extra memorable.
*For all the hazing though… you get use to it pretty quickly. Not sure if it’s a fae thing or if everyone else has the same reaction but after you get through a few mouthfuls it stops being quite so painful an experience. I’m also way too hungry to care about the fact that it tastes like I’m eating leaves… because I’m pretty much doing that.
Not sure how much of this I want to eat though. It’s fine for a quick snack, as the joke goes… but it’s not good for long term nutrition. Then again I’m also not really worried about that either. Though I’ll have a few minor issues… processing all of the fibre in this considering they’re just vines. Should I spend some time looking around the rest of the park for more edible fruits? Have Timmy do it for me? What are the chances there is much?
I guess it depends how many pets ran around with garden seeds on them and how many plants this place liked to plant… because the answer really doesn’t seem to be too many. Which, fair enough we’re in a desert so it’s not like you can have too many water generating enchantments unless you make them to a high enough standard to not suck the water from the air.
So… with that in mind. What do I want to do now? I’ve got some… food but it’s not really a long term solution. It’s enough to stop my stomach complaining so I can go for a longer term plan now… but is that something I really want? I could just try and fight those guys. I’ve got so much good shit on me that even if I lose they can’t take everything.
Well not unless they steal from me during the fight but I should be able to avoid that for the most part. I’m well enough equipped that keeping up with two people is probably fine… unless they also have a bunch of fancy hidden equipment? I didn’t really see any evidence of that though.
Or I could just leave the desert. Look for some better food sources and get out of the heat. Might even meet up with someone from my team for a bit just to find out what’s going on…*
