Chapter 2139: Chapter 2139 Problems with Pancakes
— Kat —
“These are weird,” announced Hedera as she chewed on her pancakes. Kat raised an eyebrow questioningly. Everyone else was really enjoying them. Well, Appoline seemed to be having more fun poking at them but she was still on her second plate so it was probably fine. Tanisha and Furen had devoured like four plates worth and were now regretting their life choices a bit… though Tanisha had just loaded hers up with honey so that probably helped. Lily had mostly picked at the toppings instead. Tweedle was the only one eating normally. Though she’d mostly finished.
Still, Kat was curious as to what Hedera’s problem was. “Wait, no, I didn’t mean that!” Hedera assured. Kat just raised her other eyebrow, finding it too amusing a response not to go with. “I swear I don’t think it’s bad, I just don’t really know what to think of it. The taste is almost nothing but the texture is nice and you have all these toppings, but like I don’t really know what I want to do…
“And like, Tanisha just dumped like half a pot of honey on hers and she seemed to enjoy it but also like,” Hedera gestured at Tanisha who was laying flat out on the floor holding her stomach and making slightly pained noises when she shifted around. Probably because she had four plates with six or more pancakes on each, and not the tiny ones Kat did up later either, but the full sized ones. “So maybe I shouldn’t be taking her example? Except she did seem to enjoy it… at first.
“So I just don’t know. Like, what am I meant to do with this? There are too many options Kat! Too many options and I don’t know what to do about all of them alright? Plus, I did say the texture is nice, and it is, but it’s kinda weird. Like toasted bread almost exactly also nothing at all like that and I’m sort of just dealing with that all? Ok?”
Kat allowed the laughter she’d been supressing to escape before answering. “Hedera it’s fine. I’m not offended and if you didn’t notice, Lily has just been stealing various toppings instead of having any pancakes herself, it really is fine.”
Lily transformed positioning herself so she was leaning against Kat. “Of course I’m skipping the pancakes. You always leave them so dry! Sure it’s because you add toppings that solve the issue, like, even the bacon or whatever that is drips oil and fat into the pancakes moistening them up a bit but then they got soggy and…” Lily shook her head. “No better to just have the toppings.”
“I think this is a fascinating creation,” added Appoline.
“Well, I didn’t come up with it, but thank you,” accepted Kat.
“Even still,” Appoline said while pointing with a fork. “The texture is very intriguing. It gives me some ideas for new potions to try making.”
*Of course it does.* “Anything interesting enough to share?” asked Kat.
Appoline shrugged, “Sure they’re just in the idea phase right now. I haven’t even considered the recipes yet, just if they’re interesting enough to look into. First I was thinking about making a potion that acts as a defensive enchantment. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to convert the skin into a hard and squishy layer to block attacks and absorb damage, or try to make it a potion you pour over yourself as a sort of instant-armour type deal.”
Appoline paused to wait for feedback. Lily decided she was interested enough in the topic to go first. “I think the second probably works out better. The first is a bit too dangerous and you’d need the benefits to be pretty major to justify using it over a suit.”
“Right but it likely wouldn’t combine well with armour if I made it into a coating. If you were using the skin conversion version you can certainly use it with armour. It would also just wear off eventually, but for the covering option you’d probably need to pick it off after its usefulness flags.”
“I guess I just find the idea of turning my skin into something even remotely resembling pancakes disturbing,” admitted Lily.
“That’s fair enough. I don’t exactly love the idea either but I’m also not in combat on the regular and I know of plenty of people who will do disturbing things for a bit more survivability. Still, I’ll have to workshop it with them before I look too deeply into it. See if it’s too much even for those idiots.
“My next idea wasn’t as crazy. Just perhaps a way to refine the poison collection process. I was thinking of perhaps making some sort of… spongy paste that could spread along surfaces for a decent while, and then either a secondary potion or effect that drives the poison down into it absorbing the mess. It could then be rolled up and disposed of. Tanisha gave me the idea,”
“Blegh,” grumbled Tanisha.
“I did warn you after your third plate,” Kat offered. Though I probably should’ve said something after the second. Then again, Furen managed four plates without similar issues… though she did also have less pancakes per plate.
“Urgh, but they were soo good though,” countered Tanisha.
“Pretty sure that was just all the honey you added. My pancakes are serviceable at best,” Kat countered.
“I regret…” Tanisha began only to put one hand over her mouth and the other over her stomach. There was a few seconds of silence before she flopped back down. “Something probably. Urgh, I can’t tell if I need to burp or throw up but I really don’t want to do either…”
Kat frowned and turned to Appoline. “Question… how dangerous is this for her? I don’t really know how eating too much effects people that aren’t mortals,”
“She’ll be fine,” Appoline dismissed with a wave. “Not happy of course, and it might continue to be painful for a while… but her organs are not so weak as to take real damage from this. Though… hmm… I can’t tell if she’s going to need more water or not.”
“Nyooooh” groaned Tanisha.
Kat raised a curious eyebrow so Appoline continued to explain. “I’d guess she’d be dehydrated by the end of… this,” Appoline jabbed a fork towards Tanisha’s midsection. “On the other hand, if she drinks too much it’ll just be absorbed into the mass of pancake batter in her stomach, potentially making things worse. Something she apparently realises,”
“I have made this mistake before,” Tanisha groaned out.
“Of course you have,” sighed Appoline.
“I once saw her eat an entire double decker cake to similar results,” admitted Furen.
“Oooohrgh, I remember that,” intoned Tanisha.
“Why?” asked Kat. Tanisha wasn’t exactly a large women… if anything she was on the shorter side of things.
“Yeah wasn’t a small one either,” commented Furen. “Pretty sure it weighed almost as much as she did, before she ate it obviously,”
“It wasn’t that bad…” grumbled Tanisha from the floor.
“Once again, why? Like why eat it?” asked Kat.
“I… don’t actually know,” mumbled Tanisha. “I remember seeing you eat it but why did you again?”
“It was about to go off so the bakery was throwing it out. I couldn’t let that happen! They’d be wasting so much cake! The buthead that ordered it forgot to pick it up or something. Allowing perfectly good cake to spoil like that!” hissed Tanisha.
“Why did she eat the whole thing instead of… I don’t know sharing it?” asked Kat.
“Her mind works in mysterious ways…” muttered Furen.
“I offered!” hissed Tanisha.
Furen paused for a moment before nodding. “Oh yeah! Everyone else had just had lunch… and then you decided to eat it. Instead of waiting a few hours for our meals to settle.”
“I reg-” Tanisha paused meat speech and to let out a burp. It was kinda tiny though. “Ooh that was weird. Still regret nothing.”
Kat decided it wasn’t worth focusing on. “Alright that’s good. I suppose I’m happy that everyone enjoyed all of the pancakes. Though… I’m also somewhat glad I don’t think we have enough to make more…”
“Probably for the best,” said Appoline, Furen AND Tanisha surprisingly. All at the same time.
Kat blew out a long breath of air. “Well glad everyone agrees on that. I’m not sure what the plan is for the next meal but honestly might need to talk to Steel about restocking things…”
“Isn’t there a bunch of prepped meals around?” asked Appoline. “I swear I saw a bunch last night…”
“Right there is but I was hoping to leave most of them more as payment for Steel letting me, and then us, use the place. If we get another batch of food I’ll probably make more, and I know we still have plenty of meat… but I also recognise that the number of elves living here has risen so that’s probably going to be the last stuff to run out. Well that and the fact Steel keeps multiple carcases down in the basement, but they’ve been butchered at least…”
