Desolate Devouring Art - Chapter 978 - Slaughter

Chapter 978 – Slaughter
A terrifying surge of lightning burrowed into the man’s body, cracking and emitting the sickening stench of scorched flesh that filled the air.
Such brutal slaughter shocked everyone, and the crowd collectively gasped. Everyone felt a sudden chill sweep over them, their hands and feet growing numb as a biting cold crept into their bones.
That man had stood at the pinnacle of the Spirit Profound Realm, yet Liu Wuxie had struck him down instantly.
“Holy shit!” one cultivator muttered, patting his chest in lingering fear. He, too, was at the pinnacle of the Spirit Profound Realm.
Liu Wuxie had already reached a level of combat strength comparable to the Earth Profound Realm. Only someone at the Earth Profound Realm or higher could stand a chance to kill him.
Liao Changhong’s face grew grim as he watched Liu Wuxie slowly approach them. He was like a cat toying with mice, enjoying the hunt and in no rush to finish it.
With each step Liu Wuxie took forward, the remaining seven instinctively stepped back. One of them remained encased in ice, eyes wide with frozen terror.
Liu Wuxie had instilled fear into them all.
“Don’t worry. I won’t kill you easily,” Liu Wuxie said.
“Brother Liao, didn’t you say you have a powerful spiritual array? Take it out already!” one of them snapped.
They had allied with Liao Changhong only because of his so-called trump card and strength.
Everyone turned their eyes to Liao Changhong and waited.
Liao Changhong also knew he had no choice; they would all die here if he didn’t bring out his trump card.
“Third Sister, Junior Brother, get the spiritual array ready!” Liao Changhong turned to the woman beside him.
The woman nodded and pulled several white array flags from her robes, each one fluttering sharply in the wind. Beside her, the man mirrored her actions, producing a set of black array flags with practiced precision.
Liao Changhong followed suit and retrieved a set of golden array flags.
White, black, and golden array flags formed a rare and ominous combination.
Liu Wuxie looked on with amusement, allowing them to set up the spiritual array without interference.
The three moved quickly, leaving behind afterimages, circling around Liu Wuxie.
Dust rose and plunged Liu Wuxie into darkness, obscuring everything from sight.
Light and shadow shifted erratically within the spiritual array, alternating between day, night, and waves of deadly sword aura.
The spiritual array was strange, weaving yin-yang energy and metal-attribute power.
“Liu Wuxie, you’ve forced me to use the Yin-Yang Annihilation Array. You can die now!” Liao Changhong’s voice echoed from outside the spiritual array.
This spiritual array was his actual trump card, and he had killed countless experts with it.
He had brought the man and the woman to help him control this deadly spiritual array, which had allowed him to dominate the sacred ground without restraint.
“What a fearsome array. The Liao Clan truly is formidable,” the crowd murmured.
“This doesn’t look good for Liu Wuxie. Only some at the Earth Profound Realm can stand a chance against it,” many muttered.
There weren’t many who were optimistic about Liu Wuxie.
“You dare bring such trash before me?” Liu Wuxie’s scornful voice rang out from within the array.
He easily wandered through the spiritual array, navigating the onslaught of sword auras.
The sight was bizarre as if he had already seen every pattern of the spiritual array. But it was impossible unless Liu Wuxie was also versed in the art of spiritual arrays.
Otherwise, how could he stride through the spiritual array as if strolling through a garden?
Liao Changhong’s expression darkened with each passing second. The spiritual array he had staked everything on was proving useless against Liu Wuxie, and the frustration on his face was unmistakable.
“Speed it up!” Liao Changhong ordered.
The trio spat and infused a mouthful of blood essence into the array flags.
A moment later, ghastly winds howled, followed by a chilling wave of frost. The entire spiritual array was desolate as if an ancient beast was waking from its slumber.
Phantoms also began to appear in the spiritual array, taking the form of ancient divine beasts. Baring their jaws, they viciously lunged at Liu Wuxie. One misstep and Liu Wuxie would perish within the spiritual array.
This sight made Liao Changhong’s allies exhale in relief. So, Liu Wuxie wasn’t invincible after all. He could be defeated. They believed it was only a matter of time before he perished within the array.
They didn’t know that Liu Wuxie wasn’t in a hurry to break the spiritual array. Instead, he used it to temper his mastery of Spatial Dao Art.
He had just comprehended the manipulation of space, and many aspects were still incomplete. This made Liao Changhong’s spiritual array the perfect environment for Liu Wuxie to temper himself.
Liu Wuxie shifted his stance, space rippling around him like liquid mercury. Each time an ancient beast lunged at him, he vanished.
It wasn’t long before Liao Changhong finally sensed something was wrong.
“Big Brother, he doesn’t seem afraid of our spiritual array,” the woman whispered through voice transmission to Liao Changhong.
The spiritual array’s power was genuine, clearly reflected in the crowd’s tense expressions. But it had met the wrong opponent.
Not only was Liu Wuxie proficient in spiritual arrays, but he had also comprehended spatial art. As a result, a spiritual array at this level was powerless against him.
Minutes ticked by. Liu Wuxie stayed trapped within the spiritual array for fifteen minutes but didn’t suffer a scratch.
“It’s time to end this,” Liu Wuxie muttered. He had grasped the manipulation of space—it was time to end the battle.
With a sidestep, the space around Liu Wuxie began to change, and he emerged from the spiritual array. Not only did he come out unscathed, but the spiritual array’s attacks hadn’t touched the hem of his clothes.
Everyone stood in disbelief at this sight. They couldn’t believe such a fearsome spiritual array was rendered useless before Liu Wuxie.
“Am I seeing things? Did he just walk out of that spiritual array?” someone whispered, rubbing their eyes.
When they looked again, they saw two fresh corpses on the ground. Liu Wuxie hadn’t shown mercy, and he had killed two more people the moment he stepped out. It was time for the massacre to begin.
“He’s a monster! Thank heavens that we didn’t barge into his courtyard yesterday. Otherwise, we would’ve been dead by now,” someone muttered.
Many had been tempted to rob Liu Wuxie of his treasures when he had arrived in the city, but their rationale had held them back. Now, they were grateful that they had held back.
Liu Wuixe looked at another man and said, “You. Die!”
The man froze into a lifeless ice sculpture under the Frost Dao Art. His final expression, twisted in silent despair, lingered in the minds of all who saw it.
Only four of the original group of nine were left, barely hanging on.
“Run!”
At last, fear overcame them. Liao Changhong swept his longsword and yelled for them to flee. As long as they escaped, they could still find a chance to take revenge on Liu Wuxie in the future. If they all stayed, they would only die.
“How pathetic. No one marked for death by me has ever escaped,” Liu Wuxie said, his emotionless voice striking terror into everyone’s hearts.
“What’s going on? Why does it feel like space has been sealed? We can’t escape!” the woman cried in horror.
Liu Wuxie had sealed the surrounding space long ago, ensuring none could flee.
“You’re next,” Liu Wuxie declared, tapping his finger to take another life.
However, the most terrifying thing wasn’t Liu Wuxie’s attacks. It was that none of theirs worked. An invisible ripple of spatial power blocked every sword aura and law they unleashed.
Even if their attacks could penetrate the barrier, the Divine Glazed Cloth that Liu Wuxie wore negated some energy. Beneath that, his Divine Thunder Physique made ordinary attacks completely useless.
With such layered defenses, Liu Wuxie was able to kill at will. It didn’t take long before only three from the Liao Clan remained.
Liu Wuxie stopped—and so did Liao Changhong. The latter understood there was no point in continuing to resist. They knew the remaining three were no match for Liu Wuxie.
“Liu Wuxie, I’ve underestimated you,” Liao Changhong said, lowering his prideful head to admit his loss.
“No,” Liu Wuxie replied coldly. “You didn’t underestimate me; you overestimated yourself. You thought you could ignore everything just because you’re a prodigy of the Liao Clan? But you don’t know that there’s always something stronger than you.”
His voice dripped with mockery. It had never been about him being underestimated, but it was always about Liao Changhong thinking too highly of himself. To underestimate others was foolish, but to overestimate oneself was fatal.
“Kill me if you want,” Liao Changhong said, still holding on to some dignity.
He knew begging was meaningless at this point.
“Killing you would be too easy,” Liu Wuxie said. “I told you that I’d make you regret ever being born.”
Liu Wuxie ended everyone else with a swift death, except for Liao Changhong. He wanted to make the latter suffer worse than death.
“Fight him to the end!” the man and the woman from the Liao Clan shouted, charging forward in a last attempt to drag Liu Wuxie down with them.
“Get lost!” Liu Wuxie growled.
With a wave of his hand, the two were hurled against a wall, blood spraying from their mouths. Their faces turned pale, with their internal organs all crushed. They were barely breathing, and it wouldn’t be long before they took their last breath.
Only Liao Changhong remained. Liu Wuxie approached him slowly.
With each step Liu Wuxie took, Liao Changhong trembled and retreated until his back hit the wall.
Gu Yu and Ruan Ying stood close, ready to join the fight at the slightest sign of resistance from Liao Changhong. If Liu Wuxie hadn’t ordered them to stand down, they would’ve joined the fight long ago.
“Liu Wuxie, what do you want?” Liao Changhong panicked. He didn’t know what Liu Wuxie was planning.
If Liu Wuxie wanted to kill him, why didn’t he do it immediately? Why torment him by slowly shattering his dao heart, piece by piece?
His dao heart had long since shattered, and even if Liu Wuxie spared his life, his cultivation would never advance again.
“I’ll extract your soul and light it with the True Samadhi Fire. I’ll destroy your very essence,” Liu Wuxie said.
With every word, Liao Changhong’s body trembled violently. There was no crueler punishment than to have his soul extracted and tortured with the True Samadhi Fire.
