Diary of a Dead Wizard - Chapter 787: Mermaid

Paul didn’t hesitate—he only wanted to choose the best rescue method for Mina.
But he forgot that even though Mina was a little girl lacking fear, she still cared particularly about her appearance.
“Mina doesn’t want to become a monster!”
Mina looked at her father, then at the big brother beside her, pouting, “Mina doesn’t want to become an ugly monster.”
If you ignored the brain tissue still trembling atop the little girl’s head, this scene would be very endearing.
Saul’s hand reaching toward Mina paused, and he sighed lightly, “Alright, I won’t let you become an ugly monster.”
He said to Paul, “Go wait outside.”
Paul wiped away his tears. He originally wanted to stay and help, and also wanted to watch over Mina constantly. Hearing Saul’s words, he said anxiously, “Instructor Saul, please let me stay and help.”
Saul glanced at him sideways, “What help could a third-level apprentice be here?”
Paul wasn’t usually indecisive, but today involving his daughter, he could only steel himself to continue pleading. But just as he opened his mouth, before he could utter a word, he felt the world spinning.
When his vision stabilized again, Paul found himself outside the room.
Across from him, his friend Nero and Nathan were both looking at him with shock.
“Paul?”
“When did you come over?”
“I…”
Paul couldn’t explain clearly either. He looked back in bewilderment at the tightly closed door, finally understanding that Wizard Saul disliked him staying in the room and had directly expelled him.
He wanted to rush back into the room, but thinking of Saul’s recent words, his clenched fists couldn’t be raised.
“Third-level apprentice… too weak…”
…
Saul had Penny hypnotize Paul and throw him outside the room to avoid interference.
Then he looked down at Mina, considering how to save this little girl.
After thinking for a moment, he quickly reached a preliminary decision and walked to the old wizard trapped in a dream, searching the room for suitable materials.
After walking around once, Saul came to another wall.
Here was a massive water tank. The glass sides were covered with dark green algae, completely obscuring the bottom.
But judging from the occasional bubbles and water surface ripples, something was living at the bottom.
“Such a large tank—it wouldn’t be housing something like a great white shark, would it?”
Saul curiously extended his mental power into it.
However, the image fed back to his consciousness shocked Saul slightly.
Inside this massive water tank was actually a mermaid!
Judging by its form, it was the beautiful kind from fairy tales—human upper body, fish lower body.
Not some other bizarre combination of human and fish.
Saul raised a finger and directly pulled the old wizard over.
Penny ended the old wizard’s dream at just this moment, though he was still dazed and not fully conscious.
“Did you modify this mermaid?”
“No, no.” The old wizard could barely stand. “I bought this mermaid from Nephret Continent.”
“Nephret still has mermaids?” Saul had never heard of or seen the mermaid race.
In fact, the current wizard world had pitifully few creatures of other races. He had only seen other races imprisoned by the old witch in the Borderland.
The appearance of the Abyssal Eye, combined with various experiments wizards conducted for advancement, caused the number of other races in this closed world to dwindle.
No one here talked about species diversity.
Saul dipped his finger into the tank. The water ripples immediately attracted the attention of the creature at the bottom.
A black shadow instantly jumped out at extreme speed, its afterimage approaching Saul’s finger, apparently taking it for new food.
However, when sharp teeth bit Saul’s finger, they found that though it dented slightly, there were no signs of tearing or breaking.
The mermaid bit down hard on the finger, unwilling to let go.
Thus, this mermaid that had survived in the tank for who knows how long revealed its true appearance before Saul.
Or rather, her appearance.
The female characteristics on her chest were very obvious, without the concealing shells from fairy tales.
If not for the fact that she had two pairs of breasts, the scene would be quite beautiful.
The mermaid before him had a deep blue tail with scales whose edges were unusually sharp, seemingly usable as weapons.
When not opening her mouth, the mermaid’s head could still be considered a beautiful woman’s.
After opening her mouth, she revealed two rows of sharp, pointed teeth, with lips receded behind bright red gums to maximize jaw movement.
Simply put: still as a maiden, moving like a demon.
Saul let her bite his finger while carefully examining the mermaid, his expression gradually becoming strange.
The silver butterfly landed on his head, wings opening and closing, “Brother Saul, if you keep daydreaming, that little monster over there is going to die!”
Saul snapped back to attention and flicked his finger lightly, sending the mermaid back to the tank bottom.
“This mermaid has quite a variety of pollutions…”
“Huh?” The nightmare butterfly hadn’t noticed the abnormalities on the mermaid. It flew in for a circle: “Really! My goodness! How did she manage to have so many pollutions without serious mutation, and her mind seems quite normal too.”
The old wizard Parin had even recovered somewhat. Though he didn’t recognize Saul, he knew he was no match for the person before him and began thinking about how to survive.
“This type of mermaid was bred by the Tribunal, with a hundred years of history. Their greatest feature is that even after absorbing much pollutions, they won’t completely mutate. Also, even if they do mutate, their harm is very low because they seal pollution within their bodies.”
Parin spoke carefully. Seeing Saul listening attentively, he felt somewhat reassured and continued, “The southern coastline of Nephret Continent is planted with Red Sea Trees. Mermaids live in the waters beneath these groves, working with the Red Sea Trees to filter Black Tide pollution stirred up by the Abyssal Eye.”
“I see.” Saul asked: “The Tribunal’s modified species are indeed extraordinary.”
They had been speaking well when Saul suddenly raised his hand and gripped Parin’s neck.
Parin instinctively tried to resist, but before his magical power could form, Saul’s fingers suddenly became semi-transparent gray tentacles.
The tentacles had extreme flexibility and elasticity, suddenly spreading to cover Parin’s entire face.
Parin’s whole body convulsed once, then collapsed powerlessly.
Saul had directly absorbed the old wizard’s soul.
“Brother Saul, why did you suddenly kill him?”
Penny was also startled. They had been chatting well, yet Saul suddenly killed—this didn’t match his personality!
“I searched the entire room and found the best medicine to save Mina is this wizard with equally powerful mental strength.”
Saul dragged the limp corpse back to the experiment table.
The corpse’s clothing scraped against the ground, making rustling sounds.
Mina couldn’t turn her head to see what happened, but saw Saul holding up a wrinkled old man’s head.
“I’ll give you a new skull. Though it’s a bit old, it should be sturdier than yours.”
After one night, Paul, Nero, and Nathan still stood outside the room door, silently waiting.
“Creak—”
The door suddenly opened.
The three immediately stopped what they were doing and looked toward the door in unison.
“Come in.” Saul’s voice came from inside the room.
Paul rushed in like a gust of wind, first through the door.
The other two exchanged glances and also entered.
