Diary of a Dead Wizard - Chapter 826: First Step, Complete

Saul’s answer seemed to say something, yet also seemed to say nothing at all.
Alfonso opened his mouth but ultimately didn’t continue questioning.
He knew that even if he asked more, Saul wouldn’t say anything.
If he discovered Saul had done something, Saul would admit it, but if he hadn’t discovered anything, Saul wouldn’t explain either.
The current situation was that he really couldn’t tell whether Saul had done anything to Pearl or not.
Alfonso was silent for a moment, then said in a low voice, “I just wanted to remind you that Pearl is a rare mermaid and can’t be casually consumed.”
This time, even Saul, who usually didn’t care much, couldn’t help but look up at Alfonso.
He thought, This Alfonso really values the mermaid princess. Could Pearl have some value I haven’t discovered?
Alfonso stood in place, momentarily unsure what else to do, so he simply asked Saul, “How are your preparations? Can we start treatment?”
Saul didn’t answer immediately. The crucible in his hands had already burned, emitting a pungent smell, with a mass of black substance stuck to the center of the bottom.Saul carefully scraped the black substance from the bottom into a clean petri dish with a scraper.
After sealing the petri dish and cleaning the crucible, Saul straightened up and said, “We can start the first experiment. In fact, I was waiting for you to appear.”
Alfonso understood why Saul was waiting for them.
This was an unspoken agreement between both parties.
“Let’s go. We’ll head to Coral’s place,” Alfonso said to Saul. “Bring the materials you need and just signal me.”
Saul collected his research results from these past days into storage devices, then also brought along Kate in mermaid form.
Alfonso looked at the mermaid that Saul was leading like a balloon, wearing a black cloak, unable to understand why Saul valued this ordinary mermaid so much.
Alfonso also valued Pearl highly, but Pearl was a mermaid princess with the richest bloodline.
And Pearl… was also very beautiful.
But Saul definitely wasn’t valuing his mermaid for the same reasons.
The mermaid Saul brought was uglier than most mermaids in the Red Sea, and also bore obvious signs of deep modification.
“Could Saul want to create a new mermaid clan?” Alfonso’s eyes flickered, thinking this matter could be reported to the Chief.
But for now he didn’t ask more questions, instead leading Saul back to the underground waterway, boarding the magical boat, and quickly arriving at the seaside pool where the polluted mermaids were imprisoned.
Seeing Alfonso once again use some brown fragments to lure the mermaids hidden in the deep pool to the surface, “Are these brown fragments Red Sea Tree roots?”
Alfonso nodded. “Yes, but they’re roots that haven’t stored black tide pollution.”
These polluted mermaids now feared black tides the most, so naturally they couldn’t be fed with roots that had stored black tide pollution.
“Do these mermaids normally eat other things?” Saul asked.
“Mm, Red Sea Tree roots are necessities, but these roots can’t meet the minimum energy requirements for mermaid survival, so they usually also catch fish and shrimp to eat.”
Thinking of those mermaids lying lazily on the Red Sea bed that he’d seen last time, Saul speculated, “But you normally only give them small amounts of food, leaving them without extra energy for activities, right?”
The corners of Alfonso’s mouth sank slightly. “Royer believes mermaids don’t need other activities—they just need to absorb pollution, then obediently reproduce and die.”
At this moment, a brilliant red appeared in Saul’s vision. Coral surfaced near the water again, her red eyes staring intently at Saul, studying him curiously.
Saul’s arm shot out a tentacle like lightning piercing the water, directly coiling Coral from the seawater onto shore.
However, he was quite gentle. Though fast, he handled her carefully. When Coral came to her senses, she was already sitting on a smooth reef with her half-rotten tail hanging to one side.
Saul raised his hand and conjured a huge experimental table, with shelves full of various instruments and potions.
Saul princess-carried Coral from the reef to the experimental table.
The icy experimental table made Coral shiver, then she curiously reached out to touch it.
This gray-black thing seemed even colder than deep ocean water.
Saul didn’t indulge Coral’s curiosity. He stepped forward and used leather straps to secure Coral’s arms, neck, and tail, then reinforced them once more with magic.
Alfonso approached, watching from the side. “Do you need my help?”
“Of course, you can help me record experimental data.”
Saul first thoroughly examined Coral’s body with mental power, discovering that the pollution in her body was mainly concentrated in her tail area, which was why the tail’s rot was most severe.
After the examination, Saul’s hands transformed into semi-transparent gray tentacles, pressing against Coral’s rotting wounds.
Soon, some black substances emerged from the whitish wounds and were absorbed into Saul’s tentacles.
The fearsome black tide pollution, after entering Saul’s tentacles, didn’t spread and create adverse effects like when entering other people’s bodies. Instead, it was obediently wrapped by the semi-transparent skin, becoming like black sand particles.
Seeing Saul’s technique, Alfonso also narrowed his eyes slightly.
Having Saul come to treat mermaid pollution was the Chief’s decision, but the Chief had specifically instructed Alfonso that more important than treating mermaids was figuring out how Saul fought against black tide pollution and treated patients.
Saul, who could independently seal black tide storm eyes, had long since surpassed the value of ordinary third-rank wizards.
It took an hour for Saul to completely clear all pollution from Coral’s tail.
Then he began absorbing pollution from other parts of Coral’s body.
Coral, firmly bound, gradually reddened her face. She felt those tentacle suckers seemed to become little fish mouths, nibbling every inch of skin on her body, seemingly drawing something away without leaving any wounds.
It didn’t hurt, but was very itchy. So itchy she just wanted to roll around in the sand.
However, the rotting wounds on her tail didn’t hurt as much as before.
After another half hour, Saul finally withdrew his tentacles.
Alfonso stared at Saul’s tentacles, watching the black substances being gradually forced to the tips of both tentacles.
When all the black substances had concentrated at the tentacle tips, that section of limb automatically detached, falling into a sealed bottle Saul had prepared beforehand.
Saul’s tentacles transformed back into hands. He put away the sealed bottle with no intention of sharing it with Alfonso.
Subsequently, the two third-rank wizards activated testing instruments to retest the pollution levels in Coral’s body.
The instruments showed pollution values had decreased dramatically, even falling below the safety threshold for ordinary people.
“First step, pollution has been completely cleared.” Alfonso recorded truthfully, but his hand trembled slightly from excitement.
Clearing pollution had originally been the first difficult hurdle in fighting black tides, and could be said to be the most difficult one.
But before Saul, it had become just a sentence recorded on paper.
Though not so efficient, it was exceptionally safe.
If such methods could be applied to high-rank wizards, Saul would become the most popular doctor in the entire wizard world!
