Chapter 378: The presence of a traitor amongst our people.
“Kael.”
A soft voice called.
Kael didn’t respond.
“Kael.”
This time, Lavinia placed her hand on his shoulder and gave him a gentle shake.
“U-Huh?”
Kael blinked.
His eyes slowly focused as if he’d been pulled back from somewhere far away. He turned to look at Lavinia, her face filled with quiet concern.
“…I’m fine.”
He spoke with a reassuring smile, lightly shaking his head.
“Just… thinking.”
“You looked completely out of it,”
Lavinia replied in a low voice.
“I was thinking about them.”
Kael muttered. Lavinia understood who he was talking about and chuckled softly.
“One little barrier worries you that much, huh? You are quite nosy. They need privacy even if they are your children, you know?”
“I am giving them privacy.”
Kael retorted, and Lavinia chuckled even more.
“Right, you are.”
She spoke softly.
“…”
Kael just turned away, pouting a little.
After his children entered the Sanctuary, Igni created a Flame barrier that hid everyone from him. Of course, since the Sanctuary was a place where he had complete control, Kael could look past the barrier, but he knew Igni knew that he wasn’t going to do that and would respect their privacy.
In the end, Kael had no choice but to comply with Igni’s request and stopped watching or hearing everything that was happening inside the Sanctuary.
His mind, however, constantly thought about it.
“They are responsible, much more than what you give them credit for. Stop worrying about them.”
Lavinia muttered softly, once again attracting his attention. Then, her tone turned solemn and—
“Focus.”
She spoke.
Kael nodded at those words as he sat up straighter and looked around.
They were inside the Elder’s Hall. In front of them was a round table. Around that table sat Matriarch Morvain, with her hands calmly folded, but her eyes were sharp and thoughtful.
Beside her sat the members of the Iron Council—and standing not far from them, arms crossed and gaze firm, was Kayden. He was the only one who wasn’t given a seat at the table, but he did not mind it. He knew it was because he came here through request, not by achievements, and as someone who believed in equal opportunities, he actually liked it.
For now, he just glanced at Kael, as if he had been waiting for him to fully return to the moment.
“You must be tired.”
Morvain muttered in a light voice.
It seemed like it wasn’t just Kayden who was waiting for him—the rest of the people at the table were the same.
“I apologize for bringing you here as soon as everything ended. I should have given you enough time to rest.”
Morvain lightly bowed her head.
“It is not your fault, Matriarch. The matter is urgent and is something that must be discussed right now.”
Kael answered, his body now tense, as if he was ready for the meeting. Morvain gave an understanding nod, her eyes flickered when she saw just how much Kael was pushing himself for the sake of people despite only being here for a few weeks.
‘Is this why he was chosen as the Hero?’
She thought inwardly. Soon, however, she shook her head and brought her mind back to the topic. Kael had already impressed her more than a few times today, but this wasn’t the time to think about the ridiculously charismatic boy—they needed to begin.
“First of all, I would once again like to thank you two for everything you did.”
Morvain began with a deep, genuine bow. An action that surprised Kayden, Kael, and Lavinia. Kael tried to react; Lavinia, however, held his hand, holding him back.
The Matriarch had bowed her head—refusing her right now was disrespectful.
“Today was one of the most difficult days Velmourns have faced in the entirety of their history. In a single day, two armies that were perfectly capable of annihilating us stepped on our land.”
Morvain continued as she raised her head back up.
“You not only came from the Wall to inform us about the Drakthar Army that was at our shore, you even handled the weakened Wall and protected it without a single casualty—”
“Wait, wait, wait—that’s why you two suddenly left the Wall?”
Suddenly, Kayden interrupted, staring at Kael and Lavinia with clear disbelief in his eyes.
He still remembered how the two of them suddenly flew away from the Wall. It was a sight that surprised every single soldier, and those talks began.
Kayden’s sudden outburst, however, was met by Morvain’s strict gaze.
“Kayden Velmourn, you were allowed to observe the discussion, but this does not mean you were allowed to take part in it, especially not when you do not have something important to add. Stop making a fool of yourself, and if you cannot do that, then get out of my Hall.”
The Matriarch raised her voice.
“I-I apologize.”
Kayden quickly lowered his head. The last thing he currently wanted was to anger his mother. Another round of beating wasn’t exactly something he would like right now.
Morvain glared at him one last time before she finally turned towards Kael and Lavinia as she calmed herself and—
“What I was saying is that if it weren’t for the two of you, Velmourns might not have survived this day.
So thank you, really, for everything you have done.”
“We did what we had to do.”
Kael answered with a nod. Morvain nodded back, then—
“Though I still have questions about your abilities and what you showed us today, currently, that is not as important.
First, we need to discuss something much more important.”
Kael and Lavinia nodded. Everyone in the room already knew what this was about.
“The presence of a traitor amongst our people.”
Morvain spoke with an unsightly look on her face.
“The Drakthar Regent knew much more about our situation than what we were expecting. The very fact that he knew you and Lavinia were here without there being any clear attempt of Drakthar investigation proves that someone gave that information to him.”
“It is not just about the Drakthars.”
Suddenly, Korvath spoke up, attracting attention—
“The Stonefang attacking us right when we were at our weakest—it is too convenient for us to simply regard it as luck.”
“Are you saying…?”
Tarevian, the Voice of the Commonfolk, narrowed his eyes, and Korvath nodded with a solemn look on his face—
“Someone informed them about the weakened state of our Wall.”
