Chapter 423: You are a demon, you know that, right?
“You seem happy.”
Kael questioned as he glanced at Lavinia.
Right now, they were returning from Roan’s house. It was quite a long day; many people were shocked, especially when the Corrupt Provisioners were caught and punished.
Because it was such a big event, Lavinia, Kael, and other elders already had a discussion about what they should be sending to Roan’s ’God.’
In the meeting, it was decided that they wouldn’t be hiding anything from Drakthar. Both Lavinia and Morvain were seeing an opportunity in this, so they wanted Roan to tell everything that happened today.
Except for the part where Kael and Lavinia fed the Elders, of course, but that news hadn’t spread till now. Roan didn’t know about it, Kael and Lavinia didn’t say anything either; they simply let the child write the message he wanted, and after giving it one final look and affirming it, Roan sent the message.
After that was done, Kael and Lavinia left since it was late.
About an hour had passed since they left Maela’s neighborhood. Once the elders were convinced that they could take seconds or even thirds and fourths, that place only got rowdier.
The chatter became louder as well; some elders even began dancing and singing together, feeling this energetic after a long, long while. To them, this was much more enjoyable than the Celebratory Ceremony that was held a few days ago.
In the end, even Kael and Lavinia joined in. It was quite a lovely experience.
But this wasn’t the reason Lavinia was happy,
“I am holding the hand of a God, how can I not be happy?”
The Mage answered as she turned towards Kael, and Kael just let out a tired sigh and asked innocently,
“For how long are you going to keep saying that?”
“For as long as I can.”
Lavinia chuckled as she increased her pace, pulling Kael with her.
“You finally accepted your position, and I am happy about it.”
She laughed.
“I didn’t accept any position.
I am not a God.”
Kael answered directly.
“Suuuureeee~”
Lavinia nodded with a grin. Then, she straightened her back and, with a cold, emotionless look on her face that was quite similar to the one Kael made when he talked with elders—
“Do you truly wish to offend a God who stands at your doorstep offering his help, you puny mortals?”
She repeated his words more dramatically.
Kael’s mouth twitched; just thinking how he said those words out loud was already embarrassing, but with Lavinia adding her own twist to them, it felt even more arrogant.
“Stop it.”
He spoke in a flat tone, and Lavinia tilted her head with a grin,
“Oh? Is this the God’s Divine Order?”
She questioned playfully, making Kael’s mouth twitch again.
“I am not a God!”
Kael repeated again, this time in a louder voice.
“You sure acted like one in front of them.”
Lavinia chuckled, and Kael…
“…I just did what I had to.”
He said in a low voice.
“You saw them, didn’t you? Their eyes looked dead; they were surrounded by this aura of hopelessness and defeat. Even when they are given what they desperately want, they hesitate. This is not normal.
These people won’t survive with just food alone.
They need something much bigger than that.
They need hope.”
Kael spoke, then he turned away and—
“…even if that hope is a lie.”
He muttered.
Even he was uncertain about this. He knew he didn’t deserve the title he was given; he most definitely wasn’t a God but…
“It is good that you understand that.”
Lavinia smiled, tightening her hold on his hand as she grabbed his attention.
“These people need hope, and you need to become that Hope. Only then would we and these people have a chance to escape this ever-sinking clutches of the Heights.”
A serious look then appeared on Lavinia’s face and—
“The fights ahead won’t be easy, Kael. These people definitely need the hope that you bring if they wish to survive, and you need to take that responsibility on your shoulders.”
“Why do I feel like I am getting the short end of the stick?”
Kael muttered with a pout, and Lavinia just chuckled and got close to him,
“Don’t worry, I don’t have it any easier.
After all, my Fate is linked with yours.”
“I still feel I am being fooled her—”
Kael complained, but Lavinia just placed a finger on his lips and—
“Shhh~”
She whispered softly.
“Don’t think too much about it.”
“You are a demon, you know that, right?”
“What do you mean? If anything, I am an angel.
I am loved by the spirits, remember?”
“Tsk…”
Kael just snorted as Lavinia took him home.
The two of them already ate dinner, so there wasn’t much to do. Lavinia moved towards her corner and started focusing on the Spirit Magic.
Kael, on the other hand, continued his training.
After about three hours, both of them slept. There were chances that Kael might have the same nightmare again, so Lavinia, just like before, stuck so close to him that even air couldn’t seem to pass through them.
It felt strangely comfortable, and very quickly, Kael closed his eyes, sleeping peacefully together with his Lavinia and the children he cherished more than his life.
This time, his sleep wasn’t affected by the nightmare, probably because he had Lavinia completely wrapped around his arms. He did, however, have a dream he didn’t talk about out loud.
Another odd thing he noticed was that the next day, when he woke up, his lips seemed slightly wet. He wondered if he was drooling in his sleep, but not wanting to embarrass himself, he quickly wiped his lips and moved away.
It was time to enter Genesis Hive together with Imperia again. They didn’t go yesterday because of everything that happened; however, Kael knew how important it was for both him and Imperia, so he couldn’t skip it again.
When he and Imperia entered the Portal, Lavinia slowly opened her eyes, her face instantly turning red as she realized what she did. The Fox didn’t miss this chance to tease her, and this time, Lavinia was completely powerless around her and simply buried her head in her arms.
Time passed quickly; in thirty minutes, Kael returned. He already expected a failure since his training with Imperia wasn’t complete, but he still held on better than he thought.
After returning from the Sanctuary, he and Imperia trained a little before he freshened up. When it was time for breakfast, Kael and Lavinia quickly left their place and arrived at Maela’s.
The old woman was waiting for them, her eyes instantly brightened up when she saw them. Once again, Lavinia brought out the rations, telling Maela to pick however much she wanted.
Because Maela had done it before, this time, she had a better idea about the quantity she needed.
The old chef quickly got to work; the scent of the food she made quickly pulled out all the elders from their homes, and this time, they had come together with their bowls, not wanting to waste time.
The line was formed much quicker than before. Maela served everyone with the same smile as before; the elders ate with the same excitement. This time, Kael and Lavinia ate together with them as well, and just like that, morning breakfast ended.
Kael and Lavinia returned in the afternoon as well, just as Kael promised. After the elders ate their lunch, it was time for Lavinia’s lectures, in which Kael followed her. At night, the two once again had dinner with the elders. After returning, they went to Roan’s, sending a proctored message to Drakthar.
More days passed in a similar manner; the only thing Kael and Lavinia mostly did was train, eat with the Elders, send a message to Drakthar with Roan, and sometimes attend Council Meetings whenever they were called.
In these past few days, the word about Kael and Lavinia’s open kitchen in the Elders’ block had begun to spread as well.
After the incident with the corrupt Provisioners, some people had started visiting the elderly whenever they could; however, when these people saw the elders, their expressions changed.
The elders now looked much more cheerful. When asked the reason, they revealed everything, and the more they heard, the more shocked the people became.
Slowly, more and more people started showing up when it was time to eat. First, it was the children, since they had more free time because of fewer working hours; they could move more freely.
And when they realized that the kitchen fed anyone who came here, more Velmourns started showing up.
The line grew so much that it was no longer something Maela alone could handle, but the moment the elders sensed this, they started volunteering to help her, something she accepted gladly.
Soon, things became even bigger than what Maela or anyone else was expecting.
The number of people coming to them increased drastically; the food here was delicious, not to mention people could eat as much as they wanted till the food ran out, so many families started coming here every single day.
The number had gotten to the point where the lines lasted for hours, and by the time it was over, it was already time for the next meal. Because of that, Kael and Lavinia had to increase the number of open kitchens, with Maela as the head chef sharing her recipes with her other friends.
The number of open kitchens increased from one to two to four, to finally, ten.
And because Kael made it clear that only the elderly could work in the kitchen or the ’Divine Rations’ would disappear, in an instant, the elderly found a much, much more important role in the Velmourn society.
Yes, within a single week, Kael and Lavinia’s plan came to completion.
The elders’ health started getting better and better, and just as more and more Velmourns were fed well and the situation seemed like it was improving,
It happened.
