Endless Horde: Through the Eyes of a Godking - Chapter 869: Unburdened Nicholas

Chapter 869: Unburdened Nicholas
—
Nicholas felt good. Like, really good.
He had not felt such comfort in a very long time, since the death of his wife. He hadn’t felt this carefree and true to himself either.
Nick felt so good that not even the paperwork could dampen his enthusiasm. Yes, he was doing them, not his clones, for some reason. Had been for the past couple of weeks, and he still hadn’t uttered any word of complaint, like he’d usually do.
Of course, he doesn’t plan on forever burying himself here. Frankly, he just missed being in this office in person. He knew that this feeling would get old pretty soon. But before that happens, he’d make sure to leave so as to not part with his actual job with bitterness.
Well, he will be replaced by his clones anyway, so no big deal.
But yes, Nicholas felt good, light, and airy. It’s like he’s walking on clouds every time. It’s such a bizarre feeling because it’s been so long since he felt this way that he couldn’t even remember what it’s like, so all of this feels new to him somehow.
What made him feel this way? Why, it’s his recent breakthrough, what else?
The fact that he’s now been acknowledged by the Origin Destruction Laws, as ironic as that is, made him feel reborn. It’s as if all of the burdens he once had just suddenly disappeared.
His guilt, shame, regret, stiff sense of responsibility, and bitterness—all of it, which mostly came from the grief over losing his wife to the Bug Empress and allowing her to wear her corpse—had been mysteriously lifted just like that.
The fire that had been cooled since his loss burned alight once more. And Nick never felt better since then.
Try as he might, he couldn’t explain it either. He’d say that this was because he now has the potential to truly step into the final stage of life evolution and thus is no longer burdened by anything. But even he couldn’t say that that’s true.
He had no other basis aside from himself. After all, as far as he knew, he’s the only one of his kind who had been acknowledged by the Origin Laws.
Nick doesn’t hate the feeling, though. In fact, he’s grateful for it. At least, he could now sleep and allow days to go by without grieving anymore.
It’s weird to think that this breakthrough helped him move on from the death of his wife, but that might just be what happened anyway.
And Nick knows that his friends noticed this too; they just didn’t say a word of it.
Well, his past was no secret to them. They were there when it happened, after all. They were the ones who stood by him and grieved with him during those times. He also knows that they were the ones who were truly heartbroken when they saw him sink into depression after those events.
And he was glad that they never left him behind or isolated him. Otherwise, he could’ve easily gone mad with grief.
Now that the burdens are gone and he has truly accepted the fact that his wife will no longer return, Nick’s heart feels light and his countenance at peace.
As he is now, he could easily announce his presence to the Horde.
He could go to the Crimson Womb Chaos Realm, wage a one-man war against their entire race, and possibly win using all that he had.
He could drag the Bug Empress to the grave with him if it all boils down to that, and Nick wouldn’t even hesitate to do so. He had a lot of confidence about coming out on top, though, and that mostly came from his newfound powers.
But like he said to his friends, not now…not yet.
He doesn’t plan on walking to death’s maw when there are better options, and his friends wouldn’t let him go there by himself either.
Patricia had seen that it’s possible, and she’s not far behind him. Nick has bided his time for revenge; he could afford to wait some more. There’s no need to hurry.
Besides, Nick was still adjusting.
Even though weeks had passed already since he had received the acknowledgement of Origin Laws, Nick was still learning about what he could actually do.
The abilities come naturally to him, but that doesn’t mean complete mastery. As funny as this seems, Nick had to train to ensure that everything’s in control.
It couldn’t be helped; the Origin Law of Destruction was just too potent. One wrong mistake and Nick could easily decimate entire galaxies with it. The entirety of the Heavenly Star Chaos Realm will suffer if he can’t bring his abilities under control; that’s why he had to train in controlled environments to perfect his skills.
Besides, the road doesn’t end here yet.
Sure, he had received the acknowledgement of his main law, that of Destruction Law. And that’s because it’s the one he uses a lot and is, therefore, most familiar with.
But now that he had achieved the acme of what he could do with it, why stop there?
What about other concept laws? Are they not important at all? Of course, they are!
Sure, gaining the acknowledgement of one origin law was nice, but that’s not the end of it. Nick could still afford to look at other roads he previously ignored before.
Aside from Destruction Laws, Nick also had some achievements in Space, Time, and Earth Laws. All of this came after he learned Destruction Laws and was used and cultivated sparingly by him, but by no means is useless in his hands.
Now that he had reached the peak of destruction laws, it was time for him to pay more attention to the rest. If he could somehow also cultivate his other laws to the origin law level, then he’d truly be golden.
The more, the merrier, after all.
But of course, he wouldn’t do it like he did with the destruction laws. He wouldn’t lock himself in and continue to do so to desperately seek law essences for other concept laws.
Although he’d like to elevate others to that same level too, he’s not in a hurry to do so. He’s got time.
Besides, his main priority right now was to reach the fabled Primal Origin Lifeform Realm.
At this point, he’s as complete as he could get. He should be, and he’s quite confident that he was.
He’s just waiting until everything calms down—until he calms down. Nick was still experiencing the high of his recent breakthrough, and he just knows that he’s not yet ready.
That’s why he’s waiting. He’s too giddy still. Too excited, too happy, too energetic, and too optimistic about everything. This was the high he was talking about, and it’s just not the proper state for him to go for his breakthrough.
If his mood was like this, the chances of him lashing out after unexpected difficulties will increase, and obviously, that also increases his chances of failing in that final step.
That’s not something that Nick wants to happen, obviously, so he’s not in the proper state just yet. Therefore, it is required for him to wait until he’s calm, rational, and realistic with his expectations.
And if, somehow, after all of this, he still failed? Well, Nick wasn’t too concerned.
Nick was ready to die.
He had lived long enough already. Too long, even. He’s millions of years old. He’s a proper ancestor at this point. He had long grown used to cycles of civilizations. He had seen ages start and end while he remained. He had seen a lot in his long life.
For Nick, that’s enough. Even as light as he feels now, some things have never changed. What he had lost will never return. That’s just the way it is.
Nick was at peace with the idea of his death. He had done more than enough for his people that he no longer had any regrets.
All he hoped, if he failed in that breakthrough, was for him to live long enough to run to the Crimson Womb Chaos Realm and blow himself up with hopes of bringing down the Bug Empress with him.
That would be the best ending he could possibly hope for himself if he actually failed that breakthrough. A most fitting end to his brilliant life, if he could say so himself.
His friends might mourn for him, but hopefully not too long. He doesn’t want them to sink into depression like what happened to him, so he’d make sure to go as explosively as he wished, hoping that his final fireworks will bring a peaceful end to the rivalry between humans and the Horde by wiping out the latter.
’Ugh! What morbid thoughts! Shoo! Go away! ’
’That’s only my idea of my preferred ending. I actually don’t want to die yet, damn it! ’
’I’ll fight the Supreme Will with all of my tooth and nail to reach that mythical final realm of life evolution. My preferred ending will only come to pass in case of my failed breakthrough, not before.’
