Chapter 872: The Bug Empress’s worries
—
A dreadful sigh escaped from the Bug Empress’ lips.
She opened her eyes, and the same shade of exhaustion was also visible in them. Her borrowed pretty face was marred by a deep frown, which displayed the storm brewing within her mind.
Looking around the room, she checked the things she left inside to make sure that they’re working as intended.
Most of these were bones and effigies that oozed with black smoke, staining the room with their taint. Everybody else would find the presence of these many corrupted objects rather frightening and dangerous. Anybody who could stay within close range of them was either the foulest existence in all of the Primitive Universe or a creature that had nothing left to lose.
The Bug Empress should fall into the former category, much to her displeasure. To qualify for the latter, well…something drastic has to happen. But the Bug Empress would first lose whatever’s left of her sanity before she allows that to happen.
Rubbing her brows, the Bug Empress stood up from her throne. Her joint popped pleasantly at the movement, earning a small wince from her.
As she walked out of that chamber, a long and gorgeous crimson silk robe draped over her very naked and very exposed body, covering the sinful temptation that is this stolen body.
But the Bug Empress couldn’t bring herself to care whether there were others who saw her naked body. Deep down, her concerns run far deeper than her being exposed.
’It’s so slow…’ she complained inwardly, almost sounding like a curse coming from her.
She’s referring to her cultivation.
It’s been a long time since she began this single-minded task of seclusion to finally attain the origin laws herself.
All of this began with the scariest event, in which her youngest had been targeted by the Supreme Will, and it’s all because of her.
Her way of circumventing (cheating) the concept laws to bring back her family had drawn the ire of the Supreme Will. And although it did not personally make a move on Cain, her youngest, it was enough to remind her of her original purpose.
She held a grudge against the Supreme Will; she always had.
The Bug Empress will admit that she had been distracted for a bit. Complacent, even. She allowed herself to be confident and reliant on the status quo, thinking that what she had done had been a one-and-done deal, that the Supreme Will would not retaliate.
But she was wrong. It turns out that she was on borrowed time, and her transgressions had been filed, recorded, and remembered.
That scare was more than enough to remind her that things aren’t so permanent for her, and if she doesn’t move, she will lose them all again.
And that simply won’t do for her. She would first sunder the entirety of the Primitive Universe before she allowed that foul Supreme Will to take something from her again.
That’s why she’d been working hard recently.
To ensure that she won’t lose her dear family again, she has to get rid of the Supreme Will.
She swore that she will devour the Supreme Will one day, replacing it and making sure to be the most powerful and undefiable existence there ever was so that her family can never be taken away by others again.
This was no simple promise, oath, or goal. It was a declaration.
She will manage, somehow, by hook or by crook. If the Supreme Will wants to take something from her again, it must do so over her dead body.
For this, she even forced her children to stop harassing their rivals, humans, and forced them to guard the borders all while trying to advance their civilization some more.
She could tell that some of her children weren’t very happy with that situation, but what happened to their youngest prince was enough to force them to obey. It’s just that they have to take out their aggression in other ways. Fortunately, that was easily remedied.
Speaking of the youngest prince…
He’s doing fine now. Has been for a while. With the remedy they gave to him, he bounced back to his usually bright and sunny disposition. His smile and laughter touched hearts again, and he became even more precious because of his purity.
Even without her orders, her children will happily lay down their lives for Cain. Hell, some of them might even defy her for him; that’s how much the Horde loved their youngest prince.
Alas, the curse that the Supreme Will placed upon Cain is still an enigma to her. Cain still never showed any signs of growing up or maturing. He’s still tiny, fragile, and very vulnerable.
This truly distressed her. Because on one hand, she would’ve been so happy to see him grow up before her eyes; it’s one of her lifelong regrets, and him growing up means that he could become strong like her older brother and sister.
But on the other hand, Cain remaining this way was beneficial in its own way. His innocence and purity were a breath of fresh air among the putrid, corrupted, and tainted world that is the Crimson Womb Chaos Realm. He was the last piece of pure land in this awful place, and him growing up might remove that trait of his.
So, the Bug Empress was torn.
Still, this wasn’t the priority. The Bug Empress was more afraid that the Supreme Will would give them a scare again, so she planned on making advancements to counteract anything it might come up with.
And that’s where the real problem lies…
It may be because she’s way past her prime, or her talent is bad, or simply because she’s doing it the wrong way, but her progress was slow, too slow for her liking.
Ever since the incident with her youngest, the Bug Empress spent more of her time in seclusion. And since then, she had only managed to discover and learn three Law Essences.
That’s it, just three…
After centuries of hard work, only three pieces of law essence were added to her pile. She needed 70 Law Essences to even start building the Origin Samsara Law. Right now, she only has 7 pieces.
7 pieces! After centuries, hell, millennia, actually, of trying to comprehend this damned law, this was all she could manage.
It’s nowhere near half of what was needed! The Law of Samsara was so damn elusive that it left her wanting to pull all her hair out in frustration.
Sure, she could’ve transferred her attention to other concept laws, and she might find some success in them, almost certainly faster than what she has right now. But the Bug Empress also knew herself more than anybody.
Her talent wasn’t so great after all. She cheated her way to her current position. Furthermore, the Supreme Will hates her and all that she did.
It’s actually the Samsara Law that’s keeping her safe from its clutches, and it’s the reason why she’s able to come this far.
If she could comprehend this law, even if only halfway through it, she’d practically be truly eternal. She would just need to seize more bodies, which will also seize their talents. The more bodies she gathers, the more talented she becomes, and the easier it will be for her to truly achieve the peak of concept laws!
Alas, the further she went, the harder and more elusive it got. It has come to a point where she’s met with a wall that just refuses to budge.
Hell, the only reason why she ever came this far was because she had plundered and used the talent of this stolen body to do so. If she were to do this with only her true self, she wouldn’t even have made it this far!
That’s how awful her situation was.
And now, even this body was approaching its limits. Which was a pity since she’s grown used to it. She could seize another body, yes. Preferably another talented human, again, because as much as she hated to admit this, humans were truly a talented race.
But she’d have more luck provoking the Supreme Will into paying attention to her again rather than infiltrating Heavenly Star again, especially after the blasted improvements that Gibson gave to them.
That’s why, as much as she’s tempted to seize another talented human’s body, she couldn’t. Not unless she wanted to wage another war with humans.
“Mama!”
The Bug Empress was awakened from her stupor when she heard a bright and chirpy voice calling out to her, which was then followed by a small and lithe body slamming into her thigh.
A fond smile immediately made its way to her face as she looked down at the adorable creature hugging her thigh, looking up to her with three pairs of bright and shining orbs that were his eyes.
“You’re out! You’re out! Finally!” Cain was practically vibrating in excitement; even the spider legs on his back were writhing in excitement.
“Hi, Baby.” She bent down to pick him up and found herself being smothered with kisses to her face, making her laugh in fondness and exasperation.
Just like that, all of her worries were gone. She’d probably remember them later, but for now, Cain takes priority, and she won’t have it any other way.
