Chapter 893: Where the hell is my husband?
—
“Hey, girl…” Patricia choked a sob.
She had to restrain herself from hugging Reina so tight so that she may never be out of her sight again. She also noticed the rasp on her voice, and her first instinct was to give her water. But then she remembered that she’s but a soul in this form; water would just flow past her body.
The rasp on her voice was a natural side effect of being starved of nutrition for so long, only having enough to essentially sustain her existence, not fulfill it. Patricia had converted more than original energy into soul force for Reina to consume until she stabilized. She could have as much as she could ever possibly need; Patricia was all too willing to do this for her. It’s not that much of an effort anyway.
“Hi, Big Sis!” Urek knelt beside Reina’s illusory form; his face was also drowning in tears. “We’re so glad to have you back.”
“Urek, is that you?” Reina rasped again before releasing a dry chuckle. “Heavens, you’ve gotten old. Berk and Gibby, are they well too?”
“We’re here, Reina,” Berk calmly responded, but his voice quavered just enough to show that he’s not as calm as he appeared to be.
“Yes, Reina. We’re right here. Welcome back.” Gibson sniffed; his face wore a wide smile of relief.
“Oh, good. Sorry, I can’t see properly just yet. I think I might need more time to recover.” Reina sighed, comforted by the presence of her old friends.
Then, after a brief silence, she asked, “And pray tell why is my husband not talking to me?”
That made them all stiffen as they mechanically looked at Nick, who might as well pass as a statue right now.
“I saw him. I know he came and freed my corpse from that horrible spider whore. I can’t tell how exactly he did that, but I know he’s the one who brought me here so that Patty can help me recover.”
“Where’s that old cowardly bastard?”
Patricia couldn’t help herself. She laughed merrily at the sheer audacity of Reina and her old nickname for her.
“Only you, Reina. Only you,” Patricia chuckled. And she’s right. Only Reina would dare to curse Nick like this and not be afraid of being punished.
Patricia then kicked Nick in Reina’s direction before saying, “Come on, you old thing. Stop stalling; your wife’s looking for you.”
That brought him back to the present. And Nick just about crawled towards Reina’s soul as if he were summoning the last bits of his strength to reach her. He didn’t even mind that Patricia kicked his butt quite literally just now.
“I’m here! Heavens, Reina, I’m here. I’m never leaving you again.” Nick sobbed pitifully as he held Reina’s hand. His own hands were trembling in fear.
He held her hand so delicately, seemingly afraid that if he exerted more force, he’d crush her.
Nick had never been so vulnerable. Reina had always been his weakness. When it came to her, all deals were off. She’s the one thing he’d never compromise for, and it truly gutted him when he lost her.
That said, if anybody were to mistake his momentary vulnerability in front of his wife as a sign of weakness, they’d be in for a nasty surprise.
Nobody should even dare to ever think about hurting Reina in his presence. Otherwise, they’d see how much of a monster Nick could truly become.
Reina’s face turned towards him. Her eyes were still glazed, a sign that she couldn’t see properly just yet, but she heard him. And for now, that’s more than enough.
She raised her arm, smiling through the sounds of her husband’s sobs. Nick brought her hand to his face, wet with hot tears of relief, joy, and sorrow. Any quips of scolding she had for him melted away as she felt her husband’s raw emotions.
“Long time to no see, Love.” Reina’s voice was so soft and gentle, yet it sliced through Nick’s already frayed defenses. “How long has it been for you?”
“Long. Too long, my love. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for not rescuing you from that horrible monster. I’m sorry for taking so long. Don’t leave me again, please? I really can’t…can’t live without you.”
Reina would be crying in heartache if she weren’t just a weak soul right now. Though she felt sorrowful anyway.
She might not fully grasp it now, but with how intense Nick’s emotions were, she knows that her presumed death really deeply affected him. And he might also be downplaying just how long it has truly been since the last time he saw her.
The fact she was reduced to this state just makes it a lot worse, even more so with the knowledge that he had no idea that she had preserved her soul origin all this time while her body was under the Bug Empress’ control.
He’s probably beating himself over the idea that he left her there to suffer for so long.
Patricia slid beside Nick at some point and said, “The soul force here is more than enough to completely stabilize her. The soul anchor was enchanted to be pretty much indestructible at this point. I promise that she won’t dissipate anytime soon. You and I won’t let that happen. Take all the time you need; we’ll give you space.”
“Thank you. Thank you so much,” Nick continued, sobbing in his heartfelt gratitude for Patricia, but he didn’t look at her. His eyes were glued to his wife’s soul, afraid that she might disappear if he looked away even for a single second.
Patricia didn’t fuss about this; she understood what he felt. She patted Reina’s face lovingly a few times before pushing the boys out of the room so that Nick and Reina could have a more intimate time for their reunion.
Once they’re out of the room and only Nick and Reina were left, a deep and warm silence enveloped the room, broken only by Nick’s continuous sobs of relief and joy.
**
It took some time before Nick was able to calm down.
Even he didn’t expect to cry for this long. He had completely underestimated just how much grief he had left. The man broke when he saw the recovering form of his presumed long-lost wife.
Now that he’d released it all, he repaired that dam and was now starting to fill it with good memories.
He stopped crying; his eyes were puffy, and his voice was a little hoarse. But Nick didn’t mind; he also didn’t care. If he had to cry this many tears, have eyes this puffy, and have a voice too hoarse in exchange for having his wife around, he’d gladly make that trade any day of the week.
What really comforted him was the fact that he could see Reina’s soul recovering at a speed visible to the naked eye.
By now, Reina’s voice was no longer hoarse. Her soul body looked almost solid and robust due to the pure and abundant soul force Patricia left behind. Her soul was practically becoming radiant at this point.
Her senses were returning to her again, including her sight. Both of them practically spent the last hour staring at each other’s eyes, never looking away even once as they talked. It’s pretty clear how they deeply missed each other.
Reina, even in her soul form, still looked as beautiful and as divine as ever.
This wasn’t the same alluring and seductive beauty that the Bug Empress left when she was still wearing her corpse. Reina’s beauty was sharp, concealed, elegant, and practically flawless.
She could command a room just with her presence alone. She never wore seductive clothes just to tempt people’s imaginations. She wore modest dresses, ones that never diminish her beauty and also elevated her status and dignity.
Her soul, although naked right now, radiates the same energy. Her voice also carried the same elegance and grace she always possessed. These were things that the Bug Empress could never replicate.
That ’spider whore,’ as Reina so elegantly labeled, had perverted her image and her body. That’s one of the main reasons why Nick and his friends knew that the Bug Empress had stolen her body.
She might’ve worn Reina’s clothes, but she could never truly replicate the same elegance, grace, dignity, and standards that are rooted in Reina’s upbringing.
Which brings them to their next topic…
“Love, you can’t stay as a soul forever,” Nick softly and gently said. “Pat and I might be able to support you and stabilize your current state for, well, indefinitely, but this isn’t an ideal state for you.”
“I know.” Reina gently nodded. “And I’m not planning on being a burden for the both of you forever.”
“Oh, no. Of course not! Never.” Nick hurriedly responded, afraid that she might misunderstand.
“Like I said, Nick. I know. You’ve always wanted what’s best for me. And I do too.” Reina smiled radiantly at him. “I know I need a body.”
Then, her eyes hardened before she declared, “But one thing’s for certain. I’m not using my old body again. You can bury it, cremate it, hell, you can even let that spider whore take it back again. But I’m never using that again.”
“It has been corrupted beyond saving.”
