Chapter 2202: The Princess’ Return
—–
“But why do you want to help them so badly Drake? It’s not like you’ll get anything from them that you could find valuable right? It feels like a complete waste of time to help others when you’re so strong…”
“No, I believe that it gives my strength a purpose beyond simple survival,” Drake said. “And I believe it’s my duty as the Dragon King to oversee these things. These cracks in space are dangerous too, so it’s better to close them while we can.”
“Drake… I… well, okay,” Charlotte sighed. “Honestly I don’t know why I asked that, I know you’re a good and kindhearted person… sorry.”
“It’s alright,” Drake said. “I am not really… well, I wouldn’t go as far as calling myself an idealistic hero. I’m full of flaws just like everyone else. I’m just trying to protect the world I live on, that’s all, honestly.”
“I… yeah, I understand,” Charlotte nodded. “I guess it’s better this way than if you were using this power for selfish and evil reasons, honestly… why did I even say that?”
“You’re not wrong, Drake would be a terrifying enemy to have,” Alma said. “Imagine someone that can just never freaking die? And he has like a million spells.”
“That’s just how Oberon and every other idiot he has faced probably felt,” Miranda giggled mischievously.
“Ahem! I appreciate that you are talking about me in such a nice tone, but we should focus,” Drake said, looking at the front. “There seems to be a huge line… I guess we’ll be waiting for a while?”
Drake stopped walking, ending in the large line with the rest of his large group of people, both his family and Alma’s group. The rest of his friends, such as Pekora, Tisha, and Ruby were inside his Divine Realm, deciding to wait until he was inside the city to explore it for a bit.
Drake saw almost a hundred people lined up in front of the kingdom’s large gate, every single person in this line was a merchant of some sort, carrying their goods on large carriages or other methods.
“Seems like it’ll take a while…” Benladann yawned. “What a pain…”
“Can’t we just shove everyone to the side and get through?” Miranda asked.
“That would be rude and unnecessary,” Drake said. “I can wait.”
“Hmm…” Charlotte sighed. “Wait here for a bit…”
She suddenly walked towards the gate, and then greeted the guards, showing them a pendant she always carried with herself.
As the rainbow jewel in the pendant shone brightly once she imbued mana into it, the soldiers gasped, realizing who she was.
“Young Princess Charlotte?!”
“You’ve returned!”
“I cannot believe this! We must tell the King and the Queen!”
The pair of burly dwarves riding giant bird monsters in the gate were shocked, quickly trying to bring Charlotte along.
“Please come with us!”
“Wait! I didn’t come alone, a lot of people brought me here, can’t they enter as well?” she asked.
“I suppose we should allow them to skip the line…”
“If they really brought back the princess, I am sure his majesty will offer a reward.”
The two soldiers nodded, as Charlotte called Drake over, and then his entire group was allowed inside, to the anger and disbelief of many of the people there waiting in line for hours.
And once they stepped into the city, they were in awe, its large buildings, vehicles moving through the many roads, and hundreds of thousands of people moving busily everywhere quickly told them this place was much more advanced than any other city they’d visited before.
Dwarven Magitech was incredibly advanced, allowing them to build vehicles and all kinds of other technology, these buildings were also big thanks to their crafting abilities, and their society was an incredible meld of fantasy and modernity… or more like steampunk.
“This is really cool…” Alma said, looking everywhere. “It sure is better than elven cities made of just trees…”
“Yeah…” Hermes nodded. “First time I ever visit a big dwarven city, it feels crazy to be here.”
“Hm, it’s indeed rather beautiful,” Root commented, sitting by Alma’s left shoulder in a small serpent-like form, mostly made of wood and leaves.
“Wow, mom, dad, look! They got cars!” Benladra said, pointing in the distance. “Like the ones the humans had at the other side of the continent.”
“Yeah, I saw,” Benladann nodded. “It seems these people are quite advanced.”
“Well, they cannot compare to Kate’s creations anyway,” Andromeda said proudly as she patted her daughter’s head.
“First time I see one this big…” Amethyst said. “I’ve visited dwarven villages before, but none were of this caliber…”
“Damn, this beats my home by a lot!” Triton said. “I wish my friends were here to see all of this…”
As the family talked and admired the beauty of the city, the pair of soldiers approached them with Charlotte.
“Are you the group that brought the princess along?”
“You’re sure a huge group, did you come to make business here?”
“Ah, actually, we would like to have a word with the King…” Drake said. “We indeed brought her back, but there’s another subject we would like to discuss with him, it includes the cracks in space and those buildings upside down.”
“Eh?!”
“You know something about that phenomenon?”
“I do,” Drake said. “And I think I can solve that problem for all of you, if you can believe me, of course.”
The two soldiers looked at one another, puzzled about what to do.
“He’s speaking the truth,” Charlotte said. “Drake is an honorable man, and an incredibly strong one at that too. You should definitely trust him, please.”
“Well, if the princess say so…”
“S-Sure…”
The soldiers nodded, as they quickly decided to bring Charlotte and Drake’s group directly to the castle, which surprised them a little, they really wanted to explore the place a bit more first, and also Drake wanted to find Celene too.
However, circumstances ended up being different, and at the end they decided to solve Charlotte’s problem right away instead of delaying it too much.
