Chapter 279: Chapter 279: Us? Using the Invitation
Brock, who had just started hoping for a savior, saw Catherine’s sudden movement and immediately asked, “What’s wrong?”
Catherine didn’t have time to answer. She flew straight toward WraithJack’s villa.
Below her, countless Abyss creatures with panicked faces looked up in confusion, their eyes full of worry as they watched her fly away.
One of them couldn’t hold back and sighed, “Sigh, The Black City is done for.”
“Yeah, the City Lord had no choice. That Demon God that just appeared was just too terrifying.”
“Let’s go, pack up and leave immediately.”
“But where are we supposed to go once we leave The Black City? You know perfectly well that most of us live here because we don’t want to fight, or because we couldn’t fit in within our own clans.”
“But staying here just means death!”
“What about the werewolf Lord Catherine mentioned? Doesn’t he have a way to solve this crisis?”
“Do you really believe that werewolf? That Demon God was so scary. What power could he possibly have?”
“But what if he does have a plan?”
“If he really does, he’s the savior of The Black City. I’d support anything he does, even helping the humans he bought.”
While chaos reigned inside the city, the area around WraithJack’s villa was unusually quiet.
Aiden stood in the villa’s courtyard, watching WraithJack walk slowly toward the entrance. He asked softly,”Can you tell me why you’ve been helping me all this time?”
WraithJack’s steps paused for just a moment before he resumed his normal pace. As he continued walking into the villa, he replied,
“That answer will have to wait until you hit Level 100 and face the Divine Ascension tribulation,” WraithJack said.
“Aiden, we don’t have much time.”
Hearing this, Aiden’s brow immediately furrowed.
He had heard this line countless times. Every mysterious powerhouse he’d met seemed so urgent, as if some terrible event was about to happen any moment now.
“You guys really love acting like riddles,” Aiden sighed.
It was incredibly frustrating to only be given partial information.
But there was nothing he could do. Neither the Supreme Miko’s Wraithshard nor WraithJack were willing to answer the questions he actually wanted answered.
“Aiden, we’re doing this for your own good. Many things aren’t as simple as you imagine,” WraithJack added. “Hurry up and focus on what you need to do.”
WraithJack stopped walking and glanced back at Aiden.
His gaze was complex. Aiden sensed a mix of anticipation, nostalgia, and confusion within it.
“That doesn’t make sense,” Aiden thought, his pupils suddenly shrinking. “When WraithJack said ’us’, did he really mean us?”
Here, the “us” Aiden referred to was WraithJack and the Wraithshard of the Supreme Miko.
So, who exactly did WraithJack mean when he said “we”?
Was it also the Wraithshard of the Supreme Miko?
Or perhaps some other mysterious and unknown existence?
Aiden pondered for a moment but gained no useful answers. By then, WraithJack had already vanished.
Aiden realized the other man simply didn’t want to stay or answer any more questions.
Just then, a loud sound of rapid flight echoed through the sky.
Aiden looked up to see Catherine flying straight toward him, her eyes filled with intense joy.
“Aiden! How did you get back here? Did you meet Belith?”
“Did that Jack guy step in?” Catherine asked, her words tumbling out quickly.
Aiden briefly explained what had just happened. However, he skipped over the part about Irene signing the master-servant contract with him, and he didn’t mention what Belith had said before fleeing.
“Really? That’s amazing,” Catherine let out a huge sigh of relief.
But soon, she gripped her halberd tight again, her eyes flashing with determination.
Belith’s appearance had made her realize the danger.
The Black City sat on the border between Demon territory and Miko territory. Under normal circumstances, no mid-tier or high-tier Demon Gods would come to cause trouble here.
With a full burst of power and some special techniques, Catherine could even stand a chance against a low-tier Demon God.
But compared to a high-tier Demon God like Belith, she was still too weak.
If not for Belith rushing after Aiden and Irene just now, she would have been severely injured or even killed by him.
Taking a deep breath, Catherine looked at Aiden seriously.
“Thank you so much this time. If not for you, The Black City would be finished.”
“Belith saw Jack’s strength, so he probably won’t come back.”
“Just give me some time to prepare properly. I will definitely give you the compensation you deserve.”
Catherine knew clearly: WraithJack leaving The Black City to fight Belith was because of Aiden.
The Black City owed Aiden a massive debt, and she wouldn’t deny that.
Aiden shook his head. “I only want the reward we agreed on earlier.”
He hadn’t done so much himself; Belith fled mainly because of WraithJack.
Just then, Brock arrived, panting heavily. Behind him were many Abyss creatures, their faces filled with worry.
“What’s the situation?” Brock gasped, catching his breath.
Catherine glanced at Aiden, then turned to the group of Abyss creatures.”Belith isn’t coming back.”
As soon as those words were spoken, the Abyss creatures froze for a brief moment.
Then, cheers erupted throughout The Black City, ringing out loud and clear.
…
Half an hour later, inside a massive villa near the City Lord’s Mansion.
Aiden sat on the living room sofa, lost in thought as he watched the humans from the Elephant Empire across from him.
Claire raised her head slightly, staring intently at Aiden. Her mind was still reeling from what had just happened in The Black City.
After Aiden’s last departure, these humans had scattered into various industries across the city to gather intelligence.
Claire had originally assumed it would be a while before Aiden returned, planning to prepare a proper report to show him her progress.
She never expected he would return so quickly and solve The Black City’s crisis in one move.
“It seems my decision was right,” Claire thought to herself. “If I want revenge on the Demons, I need real Strength. If I follow Lord Aiden, I won’t have to wait long to take my revenge by my own hand!”
Subconsciously, she touched the scar on her face—a self-inflicted wound meant to constantly remind her of her vow.
“Alright, everyone else, go do your tasks. Claire, stay,” Aiden said calmly.
The people in the living room immediately bowed respectfully.
“Understood, Lord Aiden.”
Once they had all left, Aiden paused, his gaze resting on Claire for a moment before he spoke slowly.
“You did a great job.”
Claire looked slightly confused. She hadn’t even finished her report yet.
Aiden smiled. “I saw the fat man you were dealing with earlier. Now, he looks at you with nothing but fear and respect.”
He paused for a beat, his expression turning serious.
“But your only weakness is your strength. Your level is still too low.”
“Work on getting stronger,” Aiden said casually. His mind was really on the Abyss Heartspire Auction House.
“By the way,” he added, “did any of the intel you gathered mention Heartspire, the Ratfolk, Suncrest Mercantile, or a Second Class Scroll? I want to try getting some useful info.”
Claire thought for a moment and immediately started sharing what she knew.
The Abyss Heartspire is incredibly special. It’s a city built atop a massive, pillar-like mountain ten thousand meters high, divided into an Outer City and an Inner City.
Getting into the Outer City isn’t hard at all. But to enter the Inner City, you need either a certain level of power or a strong, influential background.
The rules there are strict, with many different rank divisions. However, it’s very safe; fights rarely happen there.
As for the Ratfolk, Claire said she hadn’t seen any personally, though other Abyss creatures had mentioned them.
They are extremely smart but incredibly cowardly. They are masters of magic arrays and potion-making.
Ratfolk only become brave, to the point of being crazy, when they see wealth.
“Suncrest Mercantile had a branch in The Black City, but they suddenly closed it a few days ago. We haven’t found out exactly what happened yet.”
“As for the Second Class Scroll… we’ve never heard of it,” Claire admitted, lowering her head shyly.
The time she had was too short. With her and the other humans, she could only do so much.
If Aiden had come a little later, she would have definitely found more useful intelligence.
“That’s good enough. You did well. Keep it up, I believe in you,” Aiden nodded, speaking casually.
Claire’s eyes lit up immediately. She clenched her fist, responding excitedly:
“We won’t let you down, Lord Aiden! I’ll go handle other tasks right away.”
Aiden watched her leave, smiling. A simple, offhand comment from him had just become Claire’s new motivation.
“Let’s rest a bit, and head to the Abyss Heartspire first thing tomorrow,” Aiden said, taking a deep breath.
But before that, he had one more thing to do: he needed to leave the Radiant Blade hiding in his hair behind in The Black City.
Once Aiden arrived at the Heartspire, he would definitely have to use his Slaughter Demon identity. If Bella went with him, her identity would be exposed immediately.
So, Aiden simply promised Bella that she could stay at the Black City’s Pink Desire shop. Without any hesitation, Bella happily went off to find Brock.
Early the next morning.
Aiden transformed back into the Slaughter Demon, made some quick preparations, and pulled out the invitation to the Abyss Heartspire auction.
“There’s one more thing Nellie mentioned,” he thought to himself. “Besides the Wycliffe Family’s items, there’s also a mysterious map fragment hidden at the Heartspire. If I can get that along with the Second Class Scroll, it would be perfect.”
Mulling this over, Aiden activated the invitation.
