Evolution: From Little Devil to Devil Empress - Chapter 407: An Alternate Life

Chapter 407: An Alternate Life
Liora felt that she had just woken up from a deep slumber after several centuries.
As she opened her eyes and looked around her, she found herself in an unfamiliar yet familiar place.
It was said to be familiar because she had spent many years here and this place had always been a subtle influence on her.
However, it was also unfamiliar because that was a very long time ago.
Before she went to the Demon Weapon World and before she stepped into the world of Knights.
In fact, it was before she herself was even born on the banks of the River of Oblivion.
That’s right!
When Liora surveyed her surroundings, she didn’t find herself in the familiar Demon World or in the Origin Sea, but in a small university classroom.
The laughter of her classmates and the cold voice of the teacher standing on the podium constantly rang in her ears.
The more she listened, the more real the world around her became. At the same time, her memories of nearly a century began to disappear.
Before she could realize this was happening, much less resist, the memories of her life as a Devil faded away.
All she could remember was being a human.
Although the instincts of the missing memories remained engraved on her mind, Liora had fully forgotten her true identity.
She had turned into an ordinary mortal.
She couldn’t recall how she rose from her seat.
After the university’s bell rang, signaling the end of her classes, she hurriedly packed her things and left amidst the cheerful voices of the other students.
As she returned home and settled down on the half-broken couch, she couldn’t help but feel as if she had forgotten something.
Yet, no matter how much she tried to recall the missing memories, she found that she couldn’t.
Besides the fragile, imaginary layer separating her from the world around her, there was nothing amiss.
“Is it because I drank heavily yesterday and overslept?”, she couldn’t help but wonder.
In the end, Liora shook her head and stopped thinking about it.
Like an ordinary person who had just woken up from a long lucid dream, she chose to continue her life as per usual.
She did her homework, attended her university classes, and mingled among the students of her age.
Under such a situation, time seemed to speed up.
Days, months, years…
As if someone had pressed the forward button while watching a movie, the final year of university arrived and she finally graduated.
Yet, despite this, the feeling of separation between her and the world around her never ceased to exist.
Throughout these years, Liora had attempted several times to find the source of this problem.
Unfortunately, not only had her memories been erased and her power been sealed, but every time she looked about to wake up from the illusion, an invisible power would pour into her soul and drive her deeper into the sleep.
If Liora were awake, she would realize that this was the power of the Reincarnation Fruit. Unfortunately, she was not.
Years passed.
Unable to solve her “problem”, Liora could only continue on with her life and pretend that there was nothing wrong.
She found a job for herself, climbed up the corporate ladder, and within a short period of time, she achieved the dream of countless people.
When she stood on the top of a multi-story skyscraper and stared at the vast city below, her eyes couldn’t help but show some faint emotional fluctuations.
However, these fluctuations quickly vanished.
“This life.. is so boring.”, she couldn’t help but whisper to the secretary’s dismay.
From that day on, the few people around her discovered that Liora had changed.
Or to be more accurate, her goal in life changed.
From wishing to continue her life as an ordinary person, she searched for something that could give her meaning in life.
Or at least something that could pique her interest and dispel her existential boredom.
Using the wealth she had accumulated, she began to dabble in many different things.
From searching for supernatural powers to investing in explorations into space.
Once again, time sped up.
The months turned into years, and those years quickly turned into decades.
Finally, just when Liora believed that her life would remain boring and meaningless forever, the investments she had made over the years reached a new development.
Using the materials that humans found during their exploration of distant planets, scientists were able to develop a miraculous drug.
Not only did this drug allow humans to obtain extraordinary power, but it also significantly increased their lifespan.
By this point, even if done as an afterthought, Liora’s influence over Earth had reached its peak.
She was one of the first people to know of this discovery, and one of the few who dared to try these drugs without hesitation.
As she gulped down the terrifying liquid within the glass vial, Liora felt herself transform.
Her strength was enhanced, while her lifespan increased accordingly.
However, that was not the most important thing for her.
The moment Liora devoured the miraculous drug, the invisible power keeping her in deep sleep showed faint signs of cracking.
A profound look flashed in Liora’s eyes, revealing wisdom far beyond that of an ordinary modern person.
As she stared at the world around her, she seemed to have realized something.
Her sealed memories rushed out of their “cage” and she awakened.
“This is the illusion woven by the Reincarnation Fruit…”, she whispered.
But, before she could take a deeper look and admire this power, Liora’s eyes suddenly narrowed.
She felt her memories fading away once again.
She knew that before long, her real self would fall into slumber and “she” in the illusion would forget everything.
She had no way of stopping this.
Of course, even if she could, she wouldn’t choose to do so.
After all, this would be equivalent to wasting the Reincarnation Fruit’s effects.
Granted, Liora did not choose to remain still and do nothing.
In the final moments before the Reincarnation Fruit’s power washed over her, a message was passed onto “herself” in the illusion.
Or rather, she passed a determination and a goal in life to this counterpart of hers.
To continue getting stronger.
To try to obtain more extraordinary power by using every means she had in her arsenal.
She didn’t know if “she” would listen. However, she believed that no matter what choice “she” made, it would prove beneficial.
