Evolution of the Ruined Heir - Chapter 346: Nigh

Chapter 346: Nigh
Khana was talentless and there was only so much power she could wield in the clan. She desperately sought out a purpose.
It was only after she heard of the return of her most hated foe, Malakai, did she realize what she had been feeling these past weeks. What she had been missing.
When Malakai had been around, she had a purpose. One that required showing her dominance.
She had made it her goal to break him. A trash.
His disappearance had obviously left a hole that hadn’t been filled,
Now that he had returned, Khana felt like she’d been given a purpose all over again. She felt alive.
She glanced behind her, feeling a surge of confidence seeing the synergy stage guard following her every move.
It was a gift from Varnel. She had been… obedient for weeks now and he had deemed it necessary to reward her good behavior. A stronger guard had been the first thing she requested.
Unlike the veins, who always had a bloom assigned to them, she wasn’t considered important. Just a trash Varnel had picked up, Khana would gnash her teeth at those thoughts.
A synergy stage evolved was a step up from the node formation evolved usually assigned to her. And it filled Khana with confidence. Authority.
A figure stepping out from the main building snapped her out of her thoughts. As she turned and looked at him, her eyes lit up excitedly.
‘Finally.’
Khana thought, then squinted her eyes.
‘He looks… different.’
Was it the height? His hardened appearance? Or was it the air around him? Khana wasn’t sure, but she knew something was different about him.
‘He became stronger.’ She realized. Though it did little to dampen the excitement in her gaze. No matter how strong he had grown, only weeks had passed since he left Crimson Hold, how powerful could he have possibly gotten?
The events surrounding Sylvastein had been kept on a tight lid. Not even she knew exactly what occurred. The only thing she knew was that he had somehow survived. Regardless…
‘A trash will always be trash.’
She looked to her guard for reassurance and began making her way towards him. As she saw his lowered head and clenched fists, her confidence grew. She reached him, waved her fan once, and raised her chin.
“The trash is finally back.” She spat. “Just over a month, I knew your garbage talent wouldn’t last—”
Malakai walked past her without uttering a word. Khana couldn’t help but pause.
‘Did he just…’
He hadn’t even acknowledged her. He ignored her! There was no greater disrespect.
Khana fumed. Then she glared at her guard, who frowned at the sudden gesture.
‘Stop him!’ Her intense eyes seemed to scream.
The guard frowned. As a Sanguine guard, simply touching a vein was grounds for a death sentence. But one could only carry said sentence out if they possess the power.
‘She’s not here.’ The guard knew this was why Khana had dared do this. Since the Red Eclipse didn’t accompany him, it was the best chance to confront him.
‘I was ordered.’ He reminded himself. Khana’s words were the third pulse’s words. With that, he gained a surge of confidence.
With deftness, the guard reached out to grab Malakai’s shoulder, but instead, he saw a streak of green light, followed by a sense of disconnect.
‘Huh…?’
The guard gazed at his arm, confused. Why… why couldn’t he feel it anymore? It wasn’t until a thin line appeared and his arm, from the elbow downward, fell to the ground before the realization hit him.
His arm had been severed.
“Arrrh!” The cry tore from his mouth, followed by a wave of pain rushing through him. The guard staggered backward as blood burst out in heavy torrents.
Of everyone present, he was the most shocked. He was a synergy stage evolved, how the hell had he missed his movements?
‘Monster.’ The guard took more staggering steps backwards. He forgot his arm. He had missed it before, oh how the hell had he missed it? But it didn’t matter, not anymore. Right now, all he could feel was the heavy aura that emanated from Malakai.
The angry cries of Khana went deaf in his ears, ignored.
“What are you doing! Why are you backing away!?”
The guard didn’t seem to listen. All he knew was that there was no way he was going near that monster.
Khana gritted her teeth. “Useless fool!”
Turning towards the departing Malakai, her eyes flashed cold. “Don’t you dare ignore me.” She spat, then stormed forward.
She was about to touch Malakai when a heavy force crashed into her face. Khana felt an unimaginable pain assault her, followed by the sudden rush of wind against her back.
‘I’m flying…’ She realized. Through her eyes she saw nothing but a crimson blur. Pain engulfed her whole being. Then… crash!
Like stone skipping across water, she skipped through the paved path of the main area, before skidding to a stop just before the door.
Khana caught sight of Malakai walking away through the blur. Before the darkness could engulf her vision, only one thought filled her head.
‘H-how…’
…
Malakai had no idea how long the walk back to the manor took. He was too deep in his mind to care.
In fact, he had sparsely paid any attention to the events seconds ago. All he knew was that he wanted to be left alone, but two fools had deemed it necessary to pester him.
All that engulfed his head was his meeting with the sovereign.
The first pulse. The third pulse. The scarlet ten. His enemies.
He burned each of their faces in his mind.
As though realizing the significance of the moment, Valentine also didn’t utter any words. And in the silence of his thoughts, he soon reached the manor.
He found Nyx and Renlo waiting for him at the entrance.
“Ah finally! You’re back.” Renlo said as both he and Nyx approached him. “How did the meeting go?”
Malakai forced a smile. “It went well. I’m still alive.”
“And we thank the heavens for that!” Renlo smiled, and gave Malakai a deep hug, which he reluctantly returned.
