Evolution of the Ruined Heir - Chapter 352: Cold Night

Chapter 352: Cold Night
That same afternoon, Malakai had performed other experiments.
After confirming that his control over vita in the air was determined by his mental capacity, he had shifted his attention to another aspect of his power. The blood.
Just like the other, Malakai had noted a very sharp increase in his control. Before, though he could shoot out his blood, he couldn’t control or manipulate it outside the contact of his body.
That afternoon, he discovered that problem had been solved. He could manipulate his blood outside his own body, however only in a small range from him.
Twenty meters.
A range smaller than where he could control the vita in the air.
Malakai had determined that this would change as his proficiency over blood increased.
Afterwards, he’d only performed random basic training and exercise, trying to determine his limits.
His speed and strength had increased a great deal, especially the latter. Malakai had attributed that to his newly awakened muscle node. Asides that, he also discovered something about his vita.
Nyx had been able to salvage his vita weapon amidst the ruin of Sylvastein. But during his fight, Malakai had quickly seen its limits and hadn’t even used it.
One should only use a weapon that reflected their power. And right now, he had outgrown them.
’They’ll still come in handy.’
Malakai had discovered that the grade three weapons weren’t even as powerful as the weapons he could form with his vita.
He could form anything he wanted with the limit being his imagination. Which meant, he was a walking armory.
Regardless, it wasn’t like he had any intention of exposing his cards. He decided not to use this new trick unless it was necessary. For now, he would keep on using his vita weapons.
After that, Malakai had called and sparred with Nyx. To be safe, they had ventured deep into the forest, far from the manor.
Their spar had raged through the forest, and to the weak, they were both nothing but red blur amidst a ruined forest.
But Malakai had been able to determine a few things during their brief spar. First, Nyx was still the monster he knew.
He hadn’t even been able to get a single hit in, despite the numerous tricks he had displayed.
The second was the confirmation that he truly wasn’t the same as before. He had grown stronger.
And the last realization was related to his blood. Only blooms could manipulate blood outside their bodies. In a certain range, yes. But this ability came with the ability to control the blood of other people too.
But Malakai had tried to at least feel, or even stir Nyx’s blood, but couldn’t. At first he had assumed it was due to her overwhelming power.
So, after the spar, he approached Renlo and tried to control his blood. He couldn’t feel anything.
’So it’s only my blood, for now.’ He determined.
After getting his ass kicked by Nyx, he had gone back to train with Renlo. At the very least, he had been able to regain his lost pride.
Night arrived quickly, and the people had gathered in the kitchen for dinner. At this point, Malakai had recognized the form of tradition. Though only a day had passed, they had always gathered around during every major meal.
And it was all for the same reason.
’To eat his food.’ Malakai stared at the steamy hot soup in front of him. He felt his mouth water.
He quickly composed himself, feeling the eyes of his people on him. They were waiting for him to take the first bite.
He did just that, and the clatter of utensils soon filled the space as they ate.
After dinner, Malakai retired to his room. Though it had been a long day, he didn’t feel even the least bit tired. As Malakai freshened up and lay on his bed, he soon realized that he couldn’t sleep.
“What’s on your mind?” Valentine emerged from his body and asked.
Malakai didn’t turn towards him as he answered. “The future.”
“What about it?”
Malakai fell silent for a moment.
“I’m not sure what to do next.”
Valentine frowned. “You’re not going to get revenge anymore?” His eyes almost lit up.
Malakai turned and glared at the ghost. “That’s not what I mean,” he said. “I’m talking about my immediate plans. I was supposed to complete my blood knight apprenticeship at Sylvastein, then join the crucible. But I doubt the former is still possible.”
“What usually happens in cases like this? This has happened before, right?”
“Usually, when a city is almost destroyed, most blood knights, especially apprentices, end up dying.”
Valentine winced. “So you’re not sure what’ll happen next?”
Malakai nodded.
“Who will decide?”
“The sovereign.”
A tense silence descended between them.
Valentine had been with Malakai during the meeting. He had heard everything the sovereign had said, and he had pitied Malakai greatly. Not even he was sure about what to expect.
“I’m sure it’ll turn out okay.” Valentine eventually said.
Malakai stared at the ceiling without saying anything. The night air was cold.
Through his open window, it drifted towards him, filling his nostrils with different scents. Nature, wildlife and… blood.
Malakai’s eyes snapped open. He tried hard to hide his delight.
Assassins.
“Leave them to me, Nyx.”
He was already off his bed as he gave the order, vaulting through the window and off into the night.
He was clad in nothing but his thin attire he used strictly for sleeping. In fact, Malakai hadn’t even bothered to carry his weapon.
He was the weapon.
His movements were a blur, and he had sent his awareness out the moment he caught the metallic stench.
’Three of them. One synergy stage. Two late node formation stage. Seven nodes.’ Malakai determined.
The perpetrators silently, and gradually, approached the manor from behind.
Malakai could feel Nyx perched just outside the back of the manor. She had stayed back due to his order.
He blurred past her like a gale, surging towards the approaching enemies.
His approach hadn’t been subtle, not even the least bit. The trio paused, eyes narrowed as they focused on the incoming figure.
None could hide their shock the moment they saw that it was their target.
“Good. We lure him out.” The synergy stage said, receiving nods from the other node formation.
They turned and began moving deeper into the forest.
