Evolution of the Ruined Heir - Chapter 353: Presence

Chapter 353: Presence
’This is easy.’
The synergy stage man held back his smile as he moved. He had accepted this assassination offer purely due to the monetary reward. It was far too good to let pass.
But he was far from being stupid. He knew the risks. The red eclipse herself was guarding the target. He, a mere synergy stage evolver, stood no chance against her. However, he had come here with a plan.
His intention hadn’t been to come as assassins, but as messengers. He had retrieved the uniform of the blood guards that served the pulses and was ready to use it. While he distracted the blood eclipse, the others would handle the target.
’But to think he would come out on his own.’
The man was beyond thrilled. The blood eclipse was nowhere to be found and the target had approached them by himself.
“We’ll finish this quickly.” He whispered to the others.
After a few minutes, they reached a small clearing. The man landed on one side, while the other two fanned out, standing on both sides.
The man watched, as Malakai landed gently in the middle of the clearing, calm eyes scanning the men.
’That would soon change.’ He thought coldly.
“You’ve come here alone?” The man asked, smiling through his mask.
“I have.”
The man was a bit taken aback by Malakai’s calmness. He thought Malakai had been trying to put on a facade, but to think he also sounded so calm unnerved him.
“You know who we are? What we’ve come here to do?”
“To try and kill me.”
A wide smile found its way to the man’s face. “Not try, but to kill you!”
He gestured towards the other two, who quickly circled him and blocked his escape path.
“I’ll make this quick.”
He stretched out his arm, an orb of blood pooling in front of his palm.
There was a moment of utter silence. Then, the blood orb shot forward like a bullet, cutting towards Malakai.
Bam!
The man’s eyes constricted. What just happened? His attack had… vanished?
’No.’ He shook his head. It hadn’t just disappeared.
Something had sprung up just as it was about to hit Malakai.
’A barrier.’
He glanced around. A green barrier, it could only be one thing, vita.
’The blood eclipse.’ His body tensed. Was this why he was confident? Because the blood eclipse was watching his back…
But no matter how much he looked, he couldn’t locate any other presence aside from the people currently in the clearing.
The sounds of footsteps snapped him out of his thoughts. He turned to see Malakai suddenly walking towards him.
He narrowed his eyes.
’Him?’
It had never occurred to him that Malakai would be the cause. To stop a synergy stage evolved attack was to be a synergy stage. But he was just 14, he couldn’t possibly be…
Plus, controlling vita was a feat reserved for blooms. It couldn’t be possible.
A flash of green took his focus. And he glanced towards Malakai’s right hand. He froze, his heart pounding hard against his rib cage.
“Impossible.”
The man couldn’t believe his eyes.
Vita coalesced around Malakai’s right arm, slowly forming into the shape of a scythe.
“Y-you’re controlling the v-vita?” He took a step back. But no answer came from Malakai. Only cold, unrestrained killing intent that seeped into the man’s bones.
His eyes popped wide as he felt Malakai’s aura.
’Synergy stage!’
The target had grown stronger! He had gotten more powerful than they could ever imagine!
“Shit!”
The man quickly raised both arms and fired more blood orbs at Malakai desperately. Each one was met with a small vita shield that easily blocked their advance.
Panicked, he glanced at his people and thundered.
“What are you two fools doing!? Attack!”
He glanced back towards Malakai, only to see two crimson eyes whose coldness froze him in place right in front of him.
“What did he—”
Squelch!
A blade pierced through his chest before he could speak.
“Wh-what a-are y-you?”
No response. Instead, all he received was cold, emotionless eyes staring back at him before his world tilted.
’I’ve been beheaded.’ Those were his last thoughts as darkness claimed him.
As the synergy stage evolved fell, Malakai calmly turned towards the other two. He had held them in place using the vita in the air.
No matter how much they strained, they couldn’t get free. Manipulating the vita, he moved them away from the area before turning to face the synergy stage man’s corpse.
’Please be an enhancer. Please.’
He hoped then watched as the pillar of darkness emerged and began to collapse into a darkness creature.
’What is this feeling?’ Malakai’s eyes sharpened. He had just felt something within him stir.
’Something is watching me.’ It was like being watched by some primal and ancient being. He stared back at the darkness pillar and was shocked to feel some sort of presence watching him.
’It’s him.’
The being that had appeared in Sylvastein. That had almost destroyed everything.
’Is he coming?’
Just as he had that thought, the presence suddenly vanished. The darkness pillar collapsed, turning into a darkness creature.
’Good.’ Malakai’s eyes glinted. It was just as he had hoped. A grade three enhancer.
“Filthy Life spawn!” The creature spat, voice booming. “I have been sent by my exalted master to fetch you! Surrender or get crush—!”
Malakai’s fist was inches away from the beast’s face before he could finish speaking.
Its eyes changed violently. With speed, its hand blurred up to meet the blow.
The collision sent a heavy wave rushing out, splintering the ground beneath them and rippling through the trees like a quake.
Malakai felt the impact vibrate through his muscles, surging into his body.
Yet instead of pain, a wild thrill coursed through him. It was unlike anything he’d felt before.
He could feel them. Every sinew, every ripple. His muscles were waiting. And Malakai answered.
With a thought, the spiraling cords of muscle constricted, winding tight from his legs upward, gathering strength as they surged into his arm.
His fist detonated in a second impact. The enhancer’s arm was flung back violently, its massive frame shooting back under the sheer force.
