First Demonic Dragon - Chapter 1142: Siblings at Odds

Chapter 1142: Siblings at Odds
Odessa walked outside of her school building and began looking for a familiar car in the lane.
Once she found it, she took a deep breath and put on her best smile before running up to the vehicle with a cheerful aura that couldn’t be easily ignored.
Throwing open the door, Odessa hit the young man inside with a ray of positivity.
’Hello, baby brother! I missed you!!’
In response to her overwhelming light and warmth, she was hit with a wall of frigidity that paled in comparison to even the Arctic.
Sitting in the passenger seat was a young man who almost looked like her twin.
His hair was of a slightly more fiery orange than his sister’s plain pumpkin, but it was just as vibrant and bouncy. Because of its cumbersome nature, he had chosen to restrain it in a messily coiled bun.
His skin was a lighter brown shade pulled taut over a slim fit physique. He didn’t own a single bit of normal human clothing. Instead, he could always be seen to wear some variation of a gi, or monk’s robes.
The idea of fitting in here didn’t really matter a whole lot to K’ael. He learned how to become invisible to certain people at two years old, and he hadn’t really turned it off since.
Even now, Odessa had to get in the car quickly so that no one would see the car and think it was driving itself.
Once situated, the young girl began talking up a storm.
’How was training today? You look like you’ve gotten a lot stronger. I bet mom was really tough on you again, huh? Oh, and I showed some of my friends your picture, and I think they really like you! They were asking for your number and stuff, and I wanted to give it to them, but I wasn’t sure if you’d be okay with that, so I tried to text you earlier, and you didn’t answer, so I assumed you must have been in training, but-’
K’ael turned up the volume on the radio.
I see you driving round’ town with the girl I love, and I’m like, FUCK youuu! (Ooh-ooh-ooh!)
Odessa smiled wryly. ’T-This is a really old song. How’d you even learn about this when I barely ever see you listening to any-’
K’ael rewound the song by a few seconds.
FUCK youuu! (Ooh-ooh-ooh!)
Odessa was eternally optimistic and intuitive beyond measure.
But even she could recognize when someone didn’t want to talk to her.
’Ohh… Okay then. Sorry…’
Odessa turned away from her brother and stared out the window as the car began to roll.
For a moment, she glanced down at her shadow and saw it giving her that very same sympathetic look.
’We’ll just have to keep trying, twin.’ She smiled wryly.
Her shadow tapped her on the leg as it smiled back.
For the rest of the ride, there was nothing but complete silence between them.
–
The Tathamet home was more like an estate. Perhaps the only one that you could find in this part of the country.
Built beside one of the largest man-made lakes in the state, the house sat on over three hundred and fifty acres of privately owned land.
The front yard featured not only four very well-kept gardens, but it was also not hard to find wild animals scampering about the property, either.
K’ael pulled inside the front gate and rolled down a lengthy driveway.
On either side of the road, there were lawn sculptures of great winged dragons standing proudly atop pillars.
Each of them was modeled after family members who were no longer present. The hope was that, when they came home, they would have some idea of just how much they were missed every single day.
K’ael rolled into a garage on the far side of the estate.
He pulled into a spot beside not one, but forty-nine other luxury vehicles that were all sparkling and nearly new.
’Ever think we have too many cars?’ Odessa asked as she closed the door.
K’ael promptly ignored her and began walking toward the house.
’I mean, at a certain point, I really start to think that we just have them because our mom likes being surrounded by nice things. Y’know? Maybe she’ll let me have one when I finally get my license.’
K’ael opened his mouth for the first time just to snort. “I am extremely doubtful.”
Odessa lit up like a Christmas tree and rushed to block her brother’s path. ’You talked! Wow, it must’ve been like four months since the last time you talked to me. I almost forgot how-’
“Move out of my way.” K’ael stepped around his sister.
’K’ael, please.’ Odessa grabbed her brother’s arm and looked at him with pleading eyes.
’How much longer are you going to stay mad at me? This has already gone on for long enough and I want things to go back to normal already…’
In response to his sister’s sincere plea, K’ael might as well have been a stone wall.
His eyes seemed even more annoyed after his sister had grabbed him.
“I don’t see why you’re concerned with what I think now. You certainly didn’t give me much thought before.”
K’ael ripped his arm away from his sister and began walking away once again.
“You just focus on living your life and I’ll live mine. That way we can stay out of each other’s hair as much as possible.”
K’ael vanished in a column of fire, catching his sister by surprise.
When he was gone, Odessa felt her eyes become watery in a hurry.
Instead of heading inside like she had planned, Odie took a small detour.
She went to one of Audrina’s cars and opened the door before sliding inside.
After making sure no one was coming, she finally let the tears fall.
She let out a small sigh as she let a wave of powerlessness overtake her.
Today, the feeling that there was nothing she could do correctly had compounded within her until she was on the verge of exploding.
Odie wished she could have stayed at school a little longer. It was the only thing her family seemed to think she was good at.
