Chapter 2118 – Putting His Life on the Line as a Show of Respect
When Su Yi emerged from the third tower, all was silent outside. The whole area was deserted. There were no congratulatory voices or reverent gazes.
There was no trace of anyone, period!
It was completely different than the reception he’d gotten earlier. Su Yi didn’t care about all that commotion, but this still seemed strange.
Su Yi couldn’t help but find this baffling. What happened here?
He’d only just thought this when the thunderous ringing of a bell resounded from afar. Su Yi whipped his head around and saw the fourth divine tower rumbling and scattering divine radiance. It was the source of that thunderous ringing.
The sound of the bell rang out in nine overlapping waves in total!
Su Yi couldn’t have been any more familiar with this scene. In the three divine towers he’d just broken records in, he’d triggered a similar response after defeating the nine supreme experts of past epochs. The towers had rumbled, and the sound of a bell rang nine times then, too!
Someone just broke the fourth divine tower’s long-established record? Su Yi couldn’t help but be surprised.
Towers four and five were trial grounds created specifically to test Creation Realm Lesser Gods.
There was no doubt about it. The commotion over at the fourth tower meant that a Lesser God had done more than just overcome the fourth tower’s trial. He’d broken the record and defeated its secret, additional trial too!
“That’s just too terrifying! Who is that senior?”
“I would never have guessed it. The first three towers’ records were completely overturned, but now, someone’s gone and broken the fourth tower’s record, too!”
“There’s no denying it. That senior is the strongest Creation Realm Lesser God in history!”
…The distant crowd was in uproar.
Only then did Su Yi notice that an enormous crowd had gathered around the fourth tower. All of them looked excited.
There was no doubt about it. The people who’d been watching his challenge had all dashed over to the fourth tower. That was why the third tower was so deserted.
I’ll go have a look too. After a moment’s thought, Su Yi headed for the fourth divine tower.
He’d only just arrived when Jian Xingyun suddenly walked over and clasped his fist. “Greetings, Fellow Daoist Su.”
“Do you have business with me?” asked Su Yi.
“The one who broke the fourth tower’s record came here on that senior’s orders, just as I did. He’s here to defeat you, Fellow Daoist,” said Jian Xingyun. “His name is Yu Jiu, and he’s in the early-stage Creation Realm. In his epoch of origin, he was a supreme, invincible expert within that level. Now, he’s waiting for you atop the fourth divine tower.”
Su Yi’s eyebrows rose, and he couldn’t help but laugh. “He’s that confident I’ll attempt the fourth tower?”
“I don’t know, but I know that Yu Jiu and the others are all fully prepared to fight you,” said Jian Xingyun, a complicated look on his face
He, Li Mu, and Lu Kong were all in the Great Profound Stage. All of them had suffered crushing defeats at Su Yi’s hands.
But they still had six allies left. The earlier-stage Creation Realm Yu Jiu was one of the six.
“That’s actually just what I wanted,” said Su Yi. His heart stirred. All he needed now was the right opportunity to attempt a breakthrough into divinity. A true, life-or-death struggle was just the kind of opportunity he needed!
Yu Jiu might have seemed like he was “just” an early-stage Lesser God, but he was still the mightiest Lesser God of his Epoch of Origin. More importantly, just now, Yu Jiu had both broken the fourth tower’s record and defeated the nine strongest Lesser Gods of past epochs.
That meant he was almost perversely strong. It was only natural that an opponent of his caliber would pique Su Yi’s interest.
Su Yi was just about to proceed to the fourth divine tower when yet another startling phenomenon arose!
The boundless ringing of a bell suddenly resounded from the fifth divine tower. The whole building rumbled and scattered divine radiance.
It wasn’t just Su Yi who was stunned. The whole crowd was completely gobsmacked.
What on earth was going on today? Someone had only just broken the fourth tower’s record, but now, someone had gone and broken the fifth tower’s record, too!
“Was that one of your allies, too?” asked Su Yi.
Jian Xingyun nodded. “It was Fellow Daoist Bai Xiu who broke the fifth tower’s record. Her cultivation is at the peak of the Creation Realm. Her cultivation base is beyond Yu Jiu’s, and her combat strength is the greatest of any Creation Realm Lesser God to date.”
Su Yi mulled that over. Bai Xiu was undoubtedly even stronger than Yu Jiu.
After all, the fourth divine tower was for early, mid, and late-stage Creation Realm Lesser Gods, while the fifth tower was for peak Creation Realm Lesser Gods on the verge of becoming Mid-Rank Gods.
Naturally, the trials of the fifth tower all centered around breaking through.
In a sense, Yu Jiu was merely unrivaled amongst early, mid, and late-stage Lesser Gods. Bai Xiu, however, was completely invincible within the Creation Realm!
“I’m really starting to look forward to this…” muttered Su Yi.
“The fourth and fifth towers’ records have been broken, and their good fortune has already been claimed by Yu Jiu and Bai Xiu,” Jian Xingyun couldn’t help but interject. “Fellow Daoist, if you go and lose, you’ll only damage your reputation. Win, and you’ll gain nothing at all. What is it you’re looking forward to?”
Su Yi laughed calmly. “You don’t get it. Right now, I need nothing more than opponents to fight with my life on the line. As for that good fortune… Well, it’s not what I need right now.”
Jian Xingyun was stunned.
Su Yi, meanwhile, was already walking toward the fourth divine tower.
Life or death battles? Don’t tell me he plans to break into divinity through combat? Jian Xingyun was a bit befuddled. This was his first time hearing of someone breaking into divinity in such a way.
The key to proving your Dao and achieving divinity lay in refining an Epoch Fragment, igniting your Divine Flame, and condensing your Godhead. That was how Great Profound Stage cultivators became gods.
Who’d ever heard of someone searching for a chance to achieve divinity amidst life-or-death combat? It was simply unheard of!
“What? Su Yi actually went into the fourth divine tower?”
Suddenly, the crowd boiled over like a pot blowing off its lid. Uproar ensued.
“That guy has yet to become a god, yet he’s headed for the fourth divine tower. Has he gone insane?”
“No, that’s not it! Given Fellow Daoist Su’s accomplishments in the first three towers, he’s got to be strong enough to slaughter Lesser Gods with ease. Why shouldn’t he attempt the fourth tower’s trials?”
“I just wonder if he can break the fourth tower’s record, too.”
As the crowd started discussing Su Yi’s trial, a fierce debate broke out.
“Absolutely not! Don’t forget that someone broke the fourth tower’s record just now, and they defeated the top experts of their level throughout all past epochs! How could a Great Profound Stage cultivator like Su Yi possibly break a record like that?”
Many of the others agreed with this point of view. Su Yi was heaven-defying enough to break three records in a row. He was indeed the strongest Great Profound Stage cultivator in history.
But wasn’t the senior who’d overcome the fourth tower similarly heaven-defying? Furthermore, they were supreme amongst Lesser Gods!!
How could Su Yi possibly break their record?
“What in this world is truly impossible? Fellow Daoist Su really is in the Great Profound Stage, but have you ever seen anyone break three records in a row with such ease?” someone else objected.
There were people who thought Su Yi really had a chance to break the fourth tower’s record, but relatively few.
The crowd argued until they were red in the face, but they reached no conclusions.
The ones who’d just lost to Su Yi, Jian Xingyun, Li Mu, and Lu Kong, all had complicated looks on their faces.
“Tell me, do you think Su Yi is Yu Jiu’s opponent?” Jian Xingyun couldn’t help but ask.
“Umm….”
“It’s hard to say.”
Li Mu and Lu Kong hesitated to answer.
Jian Xingyun immediately understood what that meant. Had they had absolute confidence in Yu Jiu, how could they have responded so hesitantly?
“It’s true. Su Yi is far too unbelievable. Who’d dare to announce the outcome before the results become clear?” Jian Xingyun sighed.
Meanwhile, as the crowd argued amongst themselves, Su Yi was shooting straight for the top of the fourth divine tower with unstoppable force.
……
The top of the fourth tower was a boundlessly vast space shrouded in chaos.
Yu Jiu stood there, as calm and cold as a boulder.
He had broad shoulders and a narrow waist. He was tall and thin, dressed in hemp, with a long black spear in hand. He stood there casually, his energy withdrawn, as if he were an unmovable stone stele. It seemed that the heavens could crumble around him, and he wouldn’t even bat an eye.
When Su Yi arrived and saw Yu Jiu, his eyes lit up. He couldn’t help it.
Sometimes, you could tell at a glance whether someone was worth fighting or not. Yu Jiu was unquestionably one such opponent.
“You got here faster than I expected.” Yu Jiu looked over in mild surprise.
“It wasn’t easy for me to find such a worthy opponent. I naturally had to come quickly. Take it as an expression of my respect for you,” laughed Su Yi.
To Su Yi, the challenges of the fourth tower were practically just there for decoration. They meant nothing at all.
Within moments, he overcame all of the tower’s challenges to reach the top!
“‘A worthy opponent…?’” Yu Jiu murmured. “I see that you’ve yet to become a god, but that you’ve long since ceased to take others of the same cultivation as your opponents. No, you don’t even take Lesser Gods as your opponents.”
Yu Jiu was typically as cold and stern as a boulder, but now, his eyes glimmered with an uncharacteristic hint of light.
Su Yi’s words might have sounded casual, but they were rife with implied meaning. Yu Jiu finally understood how Su Yi had managed to overcome the first three towers and break their records with such unstoppable force!
Someone like him had long since surpassed the bounds of the Great Profound Stage!
“This is the good fortune I’ve received: nine supreme Creation Realm Grand Dao source energies.”
Yu Jiu flipped his palm, and nine colorful bundles of light floated into the air. “Defeat me, and all of them are yours. I’m sure they’ll come in handy after you prove your Dao and break through.”
But against all expectations, Su Yi didn’t even look at these treasures precious enough to drive any lesser god mad with desire. He just said casually, “I came here purely in search of defeat. In my eyes, the rest is as trivial and fleeting as the clouds floating overhead. I want you to attack me with all your might, not discuss ownership of mere external objects.”
Yu Jiu’s gaze focused, and he sank into thought.
A moment later, he put the nine bundles of light away and said, “Thank you for your guidance. I’ll go ahead and attack, and as an expression of my respect, I’ll fight with my life on the line!”
He spoke slowly and clearly, every word full of determination.
Yu Jiu’s aura suddenly circulated to its very limit.
Boom!!
The sea of chaos clouds churned.
Yu Jiu had seemed unassuming before, but it was as if he’d instantly transformed into an unparalleled god of slaughter.
His proud and contemptuous murderous intent shook the heavens!
