Chapter 2720 – The Mountain of Corpses at White Sparrow Tower
The two figures hidden in the mist were a beautiful woman in purple holding a string of bells carved out of bone, and a hunched elder holding a black pennant.
These were the same two cultivators who’d pursued Su Yi through the endless void earlier. Both were experts of Sevendeaths Court.
The two of them had been waiting outside the inauspicious zone, hoping for their prey to return.
But the destruction of the Golden Spirit Hidden Realm had caused such an enormous commotion that both of them sensed it immediately.
After a brief discussion, they’d agreed to risk it and enter the inauspicious zone.
They entered just in time to watch Su Yi and the others leave the Golden Spirit Hidden Realm.
“Tch tch, a peak Divine Wandering Realm sword cultivator and a young beauty of the Unfettered Realm have started hanging around Su Yi,” said the old man with a sigh. “What courage! It’s really true that the older you get, the more fearful you become. Old-timers like us wouldn’t dare to associate with him, but those juniors aren’t just associating with him; they provoked a dragon with him. They destroyed the lair of that ruler among inauspicious spirits!”
Among cultivators, seniority wasn’t a matter of age. Everything came down to your cultivation base.
Thus, in the hunched old man’s eyes, even an old sword cultivator like Luan Yunzhong was ultimately just a junior.
“Do you recognize that man in white?” asked the woman in purple, her eyes flashing. “His looks are quite extraordinary. Even from a distance, the sight of him soothes the heart and soul.”
The old man cursed inwardly. What a skank!
Out loud, he said, “That guy’s presence is far too strange. I suspect he’s a Buddhist cultivator who contemplates the Dao through Buddhist meditation, but I cannot discern his cultivation base. It’s as if he’s shrouded in mist. He absolutely isn’t simple.”
The woman in purple laughed. “That only makes me like him even more. Let’s not waste any more time. I’ll go capture that handsome fellow in white. You take care of the other three.”
She raised her white bone bells and was just about to attack when a soft, feminine voice echoed through her heart.
“You sure are lustful!”
The woman in white stiffened, her expression shifting. Who said that?
“Don’t be scared, beauty. Some might curse me as a villainous bandit who cuts men down like grass, but I too have a love of beauty. Stay still, and everything is up for discussion.” That soft, feminine voice echoed through her heart once more. “But if you move, I’ll kill you.”
Goosebumps arose all over the woman’s skin. A chill coursed down her spine.
She instinctively looked at her companion, the hunched old man, only to see that the blood had drained from his face and his whole body was convulsing as if overcome with fright.
“The old wretch is far too craven. How did someone like that cultivate all the way to the Immeasurable Realm? Just one sentence, and his courage failed him.” That soft, feminine voice echoed through the woman’s heart once more. This time, it was tinged with mocking laughter. “His Grand Dao was Immeasurable, but his courage was so limited. How can someone like that even speak of cultivating the Dao?
“Heavenly Sovereign Fuyao sure is blind and foolish. His disciples and grand-disciples are all drunks and wastrels, pleasant to the eyes, yet useless.”
The woman’s face paled with fright. She responded, “Senior, might I request your name?”
“Me? I’m no one significant. My name isn’t even worth mentioning. No need to even bring it up,” that soft voice said modestly. “Right, aren’t you curious what I said earlier to break your companion’s courage?”
The beautiful woman in purple trembled, unsure of how to respond.
That soft voice continued, “I told him that I built a mound of corpses on White Sparrow Tower, and that once he was dead, I’d contribute his head to the pile for all to see.”
White Sparrow Tower! A mound of corpses! An explosion went off in the woman’s head as she recalled a certain someone―Yao Monarch Lian Luo!
The master of White Sparrow Tower, a mighty yao cultivator of the Heavenly Fate Realm, and an unparalleled bandit famed throughout the River of Destiny!
There were thirteen towers famed throughout the Eternal Heavens Domain. White Sparrow Tower was one of them.
Rumor had it that a mound of skulls stood on the roof of White Sparrow Tower. It was built entirely out of the heads of Eternals, and it was fully one thousand feet tall!
Every night, blood qi shot out of the mound, staining the night sky red and filling the air with roars and cries of agony.
It was a horrifying spectacle. Even the fiercest of heretical cultivators would jump with fright and lament their own inadequacy!
And Yao Monarch Lian Luo had built the mound himself. Over the years, he decapitated every Eternal he slew and contributed their head to the famous burial mound.
Eventually, Yao Monarch Lian Luo decided that he’d gone overboard with the killing, so he announced that he’d only claim the heads of those at or above the Silence Realm going forward. Only enemies of that caliber were worthy of being displayed to the world as part of his burial mound.
How could the woman in purple possibly fail to understand who the owner of that soft, feminine voice was?
It was no wonder that her companion had been scared out of his wits. He must have guessed that they were up against Yao Monarch Lian Luo!
The woman in purple was scared, too. She felt as if she’d been plunged into an icy abyss. How… how could that heartless killer who delights in collecting the heads of his enemies have targeted us?
“Oh, look. They managed to leave safely. How nice.” That soft, feminine voice rang out, and a roughly ten-foot figure silently appeared in front of the woman in purple.
He was big-boned, with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and a bald head. His features were coarse and ferocious, and he had a strange, blood-red lotus emblazoned at the center of his forehead.
Yao Monarch Lian Luo!
His name meant “falling lotus,” but its elegance didn’t match his enormous body or ferocious, unearthly presence. He had a distinctive, imposing majesty.
He stood there languidly, watching Su Yi and his companions gradually fade into the mist. Only then did he turn to look at the hunched old man and woman in purple.
Both had stiffened, heads lowered. Yao Monarch Lian Luo’s terrifying pressure left both of them feeling suffocated.
Yao Monarch Lian Luo laughed, baring his pearly white teeth, but his gaze was sinister. “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. The elites of the Eternal Heavens Domain all know that an opportunity to fight me is the greatest fortune of a lifetime!”
His voice was soft and feminine, not at all in line with his enormous, stalwart frame, but that just made him all the more unsettling.
The beautiful woman’s face paled. She stammered, “Senior, we’re from Sevendeaths Court. Might you perhaps…”
“Shhh!” Yao Monarch Lian Luo raised a finger to his lips. “Once I’ve added your heads to the mound, you can watch and see if Sevendeaths Court sends anyone to avenge you.”
He smiled and clapped his hands. “It’s time for you to enjoy your newfound good happiness!”
The hunched old man retreated explosively, activating his black pennant with all his might.
At the same time, the woman in purple waved her white bone bells.
The two of them seemed to have reached a tacit understanding. They’d avoid battle if they could, but if they had to fight, they’d go all out!
Lian Luo just laughed and shook his sleeve.
A bloody lotus diagram whooshed forth, shaking the void and sealing time and space.
The hunched old man and the woman in purple froze in place, unable to move a muscle.
They could only watch as Lian Luo approached with powerful strides, like an endlessly enormous demon god filling their field of view.
He raised his hand, and the blood-red lotus diagram lit up.
Both Immeasurable Realm Eternals of the Sevendeaths Court were ground away to nothing. Only their heads remained.
Lian Luo waved his sleeve, and both heads vanished.
“Two new blood debts have been added to the mound on White Sparrow Tower. If not for Master’s protection, Heavenly Sovereign Fuyao would likely insist on killing me,” murmured Lian Luo.
He gazed into the distance, lost in thought. After a while, he laughed and whispered, “When I report back, I’ve got to flatter Master thoroughly. After all, a powerful tree casts a lot of shade! With Master here to protect me, Sevendeaths Court ain’t shit, are they?”
Lian Luo silently vanished.
The master of White Sparrow Tower was indeed a ruthless character infamous throughout the Eternal Heavens Domain. He had two famous catchphrases.
First, he always said that an opportunity to fight him was the greatest fortune of a lifetime.
Second, when he took his enemies’ heads, he congratulated them on their “newfound happiness.”
…
The River of Destiny was enormous and grand, and it flowed without end. There was no telling how far it was, or how deep, or how far it flowed.
Every shifting of its waters was like a churning galaxy.
In the face of this mysterious river, even Eternals seemed utterly paltry and insignificant.
Like individual grains of sand in a vast ocean.
Even just gazing upon it from afar, Su Yi’s heart shook.
Back in the God Domain, he’d seen the River of Destiny before, but only sections of it, and from a great distance. It seemed incomparably indistinct and illusory.
But now, he could see the true River of Destiny!
Its coursing waters flowed through the void. There was no grasping it in its entirety, nor could anyone determine where it began or where it ended.
It seemed endless and immeasurable!
When Su Yi gazed upon it, the Epoch Seedling that formed his Eternal Dao Root swayed, and his qi boiled within him.
He felt like a dragon returning to the sea or a phoenix soaring beneath the nine heavens.
The River of Destiny was a place for Eternals to realize their ambitions, a sacred ground for pursuing the Grand Dao!
The River of Destiny had numerous Ports of Ushering. All of them were, in truth, spacetime tunnels leading to different regions of the River of Destiny.
For instance, Blue Peak Port was a spacetime tunnel leading to the Eternal Heavens Domain’s Blue Peak Continent.
Qin Suqing and Luan Yunzhong led the way, while Su Yi and Pu Xuan followed.
As they drew closer and closer to the River of Destiny, Qin Suqing took out a blue-green lotus leaf and swung it gently. It instantly expanded until it was over ten feet long. A rain of blue-green light fell from its rim, enveloping the group completely.
“Without an Eternal treasure to protect you, even just the aura of the River of Destiny is enough to grind away one’s body and soul. It’s utterly terrifying,” explained Qin Suqing.
Her conversations with Su Yi throughout this journey had left her increasingly convinced that he was indeed a cultivator of a lower realm, and that he really hadn’t been to the River of Destiny before.
On the River of Destiny, “lower realms” was a catch-all phrase for all places outside the River of Destiny.
As they drew closer to the River of Destiny, Su Yi discovered just how vast and grand its current was. Every drop of water was the size of a mountain.
The crashing waves stirred up mist full of a taboo air of destiny.
He didn’t even need to think to know that this was the power of the Laws of Destiny!
