Chapter 1647 Relying on Others? [Bonus]
[Bonus thanks to Bryson_Clark 🙂 ]
Sylas exhaled a breath, his body heat having reached a level that would have been incomprehensible to him in the past. The air practically boiled, what water vapor was left in it from the misted rivers and lakes being erased from existence in blooming puffs of steam that vanished as quickly as they were formed.
He wasn’t the sort that liked to rely on others. As nice as the ranking system sounded, he wasn’t a fan.
Even if he got first twice over, something that seemed very possible now, how would the rest go? What if Elbrum decided to change the rules on a whim like he already had?
No.
If there was an opportunity to decide the outcome without reaching the end, then he was always going to take it. When he sensed the change in his Primus Imperium Crown, he knew that he had found the answer to the question he was looking for.
As arrogant as he was, Sylas knew he had his limits. Trying to manipulate the formations crafted by The Sanctum even the smallest measure had left him knocked out for almost a week. There was only so much he could do with his current strength, even with the Runeweaver Eyes to rely on.
And even if he could magically up his strength for a short moment, he didn’t have the knowledge or skill to execute it. His Rune Mastery might have left all those on the outside in awe, but Sylas himself felt like he had too far to go still.
He was limited in what he could accomplish, especially when it was larger, stronger, and more complex Runes and Rune meshes in question.
This time, though… he had gotten lucky.
For some reason, his Crown reacted based on the reaction of the crowd outside. He had felt it grow stronger, as though his feats were improving it.
Sylas didn’t believe that this was solely because of the Primus Imperium Title alone, but instead a special reaction it was having along with his Champion Will.
It was as the little girl had said. Champion Will was momentum incarnate. The more you succeeded, the more likely you were to succeed again. Feats built atop feats and suddenly the world felt like it was all falling your way.
It was the same concept as dynasties in sports. Those watching from the outside always felt like luck constantly fell the way of these dynasties. The referees were on their side, the lucky bounces were on their side, the sports gods themselves were on their side… When in reality, it was little more than preparedness meeting opportunity.
Champion Will was more real than that, more tangible. And like the little girl had said, Primus Imperium was nothing more than an attempt to recreate the prowess of Champion Will artificially, something the current system and systems of the past had formed as a way to leverage this legendary ability.
In fact, Sylas was personally of the opinion that Champion Will was deeper than that, tied to things like Luck, Will, and Karma…
And he had just proven it.
And he had also seen through something else at this moment.
He wouldn’t need to kill other Primus Imperium in order to upgrade his Title like others needed to. With Champion Will, so long as he improved it enough, he could progress his Primus Imperium to the next level all on his own.
Now, how many feats that would take was another matter entirely. He had just defeated one of the best E-tiers in this entire Heaven, and yet he hardly felt it budge.
But while making it to the next level of Primus Imperium was impossible…
Saving Gralith was another matter entirely.
Ekear’s words had been very odd back then. They had to improve their ranking because somehow that would affect one of Gralith’s Spirits, and that would in turn strengthen the real Gralith, which would in turn allow him to escape on his own, saving Gwenu and Khan.
He didn’t really go in depth with how that was done, but what was obvious to Sylas was that this was obviously not a matter of rewards. If Gralith had been banished from the Emperor Sanctum, no matter how well the 073 Sanctum did, they wouldn’t just release him because of a subordinate Sect.
Gralith’s value alone had probably been greater than anyone of the 001 Sanctum at his peak. What good was it for a 073 Sanctum to average out at 040?
No. It wasn’t a tangible reward Ekear was looking for… but instead something intangible.
Until now, Sylas had come across several ethereal concepts.
When his Luck first improved from 1 point to 11, it felt like he could finally see the world in colors. Back then, he had even sensed Casstle Main in danger from afar, allowing him to return in time to save Cassarae.
Since then, his Luck had played a factor in countless ways, even randomly teleporting Jala and Alex right into his lap. If that hadn’t happened, maybe he would have never been able to save Earth as easily as he had.
But outside of Luck, he had also come across the concept of Karma several times now, namely with a certain member of the Florineth Race.
When Sylas felt his Crown react to the reaction of the crowd, he had felt it there… an ethereal sort of momentum. And it was then he understood the real reason an organization as powerful as the Emperor Sanctum carried around with itself such weak branch powers.
Why didn’t they just keep the top 10 Sanctums and get rid of everyone else? No matter how much movement there was between Sanctums, or how many generations passed, 100 Sanctum was never going to make it to 010 Sanctum. So what was the point?
It all returned to the same concepts once again…
Luck and Karma.
When Sylas realized that, he realized something else that was quite simple.
If he could concentrate enough of that Karma and Luck on himself, shifting the balance of awe so greatly and then taking it all with his Champion Will… Why would he have to wait for the gathering to end?
He would gather enough Luck onto the 073 Sanctum on his own to release Gralith.
