- Chapter 646 646: A Fight to the Death, a Narrow Escape

Even though Julian was still able to stay calm, the situation in front of him was nearly impossible to solve.
The mystical beast he had summoned could only defend against Charles’s attacks. And up until now, Charles hadn’t even called upon his own mystical beasts to join the fight. Without their help, Charles was already holding such a huge advantage. If his beasts stepped in, Julian would be defeated in no time.
After thinking it through, Julian quickly recalled the Chrono Rabbit back to his side. Without hesitation, he ordered it to create a large field of temporal chaos.
In an instant, countless streams of distorted time tore across the battlefield, splitting it apart. Some zones accelerated the flow of time, while others slowed it down. Faced with such a broken battlefield where time moved at completely different speeds, even Charles couldn’t adapt quickly or perfectly.
“Fine, consider this your win for now!” Julian shouted coldly from afar, separated by waves of turbulent time.
“But don’t think you’ve won for good. You only caught me off guard this time with your sneak attack. Next time we meet, I won’t give you the chance again!”
With that, he summoned another mystical beast—a massive eagle. The moment it appeared, the eagle spread its wings wide and carried Julian into the skies.
Seeing this, Charles reacted at once. He hurled Mousie forward.
Mousie, being a dark Demigod still in its growth stage, wasn’t as affected by the turbulent streams of time. On top of that, it possessed the skill [Darkness Cloak], which allowed its body to turn ethereal, letting it avoid much of the interference.
Effortlessly, Mousie slipped through the raging streams and reached the place where Julian had just stood. Without any hesitation, it raised its head and fixed its gaze on Julian, who was riding the eagle high above.
From Mousie’s eyes shot a beam of black light. The ray carried a heavy, ominous aura. The instant it struck the eagle, the giant bird fell dead from the sky.
Caught completely unprepared, Julian plummeted downward. His eyes widened in disbelief as he looked at the dark creature in the distance.
He had indeed gathered a lot of information about Charles from other members of the Ancient Academy. But those members had never managed to uncover the full details of Charles’s beasts.
Naturally, Julian had no idea what kind of skills or powers Mousie truly possessed.
While Julian was still in a daze, Charles quickly used his skills to cut through one time stream after another.
By now, only a single stream of distorted time stood between him and Julian. But this last one was also the hardest to cross.
Julian instinctively looked in Charles’s direction. The moment he realized that only one final barrier separated them, panic immediately took over.
“Impossible! No matter how strong you are, there’s no way you can kill me here! I am a Time Monk, one of the most valued talents under Dean Everett!” Julian roared at Charles.
But his outburst was really just to give himself some courage. Forcing down his fear, he decided to strike at Mousie first.
“I don’t know exactly what you are, but I’m still confident I can destroy you! You’re only a mystical beast—killing you will be easy.”
Julian commanded the Chrono Rabbit to cast a slowing debuff on Mousie, then personally launched an attack.
Although Mousie was a dark Demigod, it was still in its growth stage. Its personality was mischievous and timid, so instead of clashing head-on, it chose to slip into the shadows again and again to dodge.
Mousie’s mastery over shadows was extraordinary. Out here in the desert, the opportunities to use such a skill were limited, yet it was still nearly impossible to pin down where exactly it was hiding.
“You damned rat, come out and face me!” Julian bellowed, unleashing strikes in all directions.
His attacks hit nothing. His furious roar only betrayed how shaken he truly was.
After five minutes, Mousie suddenly appeared right in front of him.
Julian’s eyes lit up with joy. He shouted quickly, “So you’ve finally run out of places to hide? Then just accept death! If you weren’t Charles’s mystical beast, I might have spared you. But since you are his beast, your fate is sealed!”
Just as he finished speaking and prepared to strike, a colorful arrow came whistling straight at his chest.
Julian, however, was still an experienced Beast Master. The moment he caught the flash of the arrow in the corner of his eye, he immediately gave up his attack on Mousie and rolled backward, landing in a safer spot.
“You think you’re worthy of killing my mystical beast?” Charles said coldly, glaring at him.
During the time Julian was busy playing hide-and-seek with Mousie, Charles had already pushed through the final stream of chaotic time.
Now, nothing stood between him and Julian.
At last, he could unleash his full strength and finish Julian quickly.
When Julian saw Charles breaking through, despair filled his face. He finally realized there was no way he could ever match Charles.
But he still reacted swiftly.
“You’re nothing special! I can kill the mystical beasts of other Beast Masters, and yours will be no different!”
Though worry was already heavy in his heart, his tone remained calm.
Charles gave a cold laugh.
“You’re really confident, aren’t you? Then let me see just how strong you actually are.”
The moment his words fell, Charles gripped the Black Gold Long Knife and charged straight toward Julian.
This attack had been prepared for a long time. If it landed, Julian would be either dead or gravely wounded.
Julian simply stood there smiling as Charles closed the distance.
When they were less than a hundred meters apart, Julian ordered the Chrono Rabbit to dash straight at Charles. At the same time, he turned and fled.
“You’re a coward! Weren’t you just boasting about killing my mystical beast? And now you’re throwing your own beast away as a shield to stall me?”
Charles’s mocking voice echoed across the battlefield.
But Julian didn’t care. He wasn’t about to turn back just because of taunts.
He already knew this fight was impossible to win. For him, the only choice left was escape.
The Chrono Rabbit clashed with Charles head-on.
The Black Gold Long Knife slashed into the beast’s body. In that instant, its command over time suddenly surged.
The flow of time around Charles froze completely.
Both Charles and the Chrono Rabbit were sealed inside a confined zone where time stood still.
Julian, seizing the chance, escaped without hesitation.
He never looked back at the Chrono Rabbit—deep down, he already believed it was doomed.
As Julian fled, silence fell over the battlefield.
Mousie crept to the edge of the frozen time field. It looked left, then right, as if searching for a way to help Charles break free.
But it couldn’t. After all, it had no power over time.
After a short moment of hesitation, Mousie slipped into the shadows and vanished.
It had decided to hurry toward the Withered Tree Fortress—where the rest of Charles’s mystical beasts were waiting.
“You just ran away like that?! Even if you couldn’t save me, you should have stayed to make sure I was safe! I’m your master!”
Inside the frozen zone of time, Charles could only feel speechless.
He could still think clearly—his mind wasn’t affected by the time lock. What he couldn’t do was move his body.
“I really didn’t expect the Chrono Rabbit to trap me inside a time-stasis field. Looks like I underestimated the power of Julian’s mystical beast.”
With no way to act, all Charles could do was let his thoughts wander.
In truth, Charles respected the Chrono Rabbit a great deal. If he had the chance, he would even want to make it his own mystical beast.
But he also knew how hard that would be. And even if he succeeded, there was always the risk that the Chrono Rabbit might betray him someday.
So for now, it was only an idea—nothing more.
At the Withered Tree Fortress, Mousie used shadow jumps to quickly reach the place where Charles’s other mystical beasts were gathered.
It immediately told them about the trouble Charles had run into.
Without hesitation, Rainbow led the beasts into the sky, flying straight toward Charles’s location.
Their sudden departure naturally caused alarm among the Serpents inside the fortress.
But under the calming words of General Sost and High Priest Kent, the Serpents soon settled down.
“Are you sure nothing serious has happened? Why else would Charles’s beasts suddenly leave together? Could it be that Charles has run into grave danger?” High Priest Kent asked with a furrowed brow, worry written on his face.
General Sost shook his head.
“I don’t know for certain, but I trust Charles. Even if he has run into danger, he’ll find a way to survive. What we need to do is stick to the plan he left us.
We cannot become a burden to him. More importantly, this is also for the safety of the Serpent Empire. The Stellar Empire’s attack will begin very soon, and we cannot afford to be distracted at such a critical moment.”
Sost’s words made perfect sense.
Although Kent was still worried, he couldn’t help but nod in agreement.
