- Chapter 648 648: The Chrono Rabbit That Couldn’t Be Tamed

The news that the Stellar Empire’s crown prince had ordered the army to prepare for an immediate attack on the Serpent Empire couldn’t be kept secret.
Only half a day later, the Serpent Empire had already received solid intelligence.
General Sost quickly summoned High Priest Kent and Zara.
“I’ve just received very reliable information,” Sost said in a grave tone. “The Stellar Empire’s assault is about to begin. We have no more than a day or two left to prepare.”
Both Kent and Zara’s faces tightened with concern. But the truth was, they had already done everything they could.
“You should have finished your tasks by now, correct?” Sost asked seriously.
Kent and Zara nodded at the same time.
“The defenses around Withered Tree Fortress are complete. The Stellar Empire will have to break through the front wall of the fortress before they can even touch the surrounding defenses. There’s no way they can surround the stronghold,” Zara said quickly.
She was the one in charge of strengthening the defenses. While Withered Tree Fortress itself was already solid, the areas around it had once been weak. Over the past days, she had led large numbers of Serpent soldiers to reinforce those vulnerable points.
Kent followed with his own report.
“The rear of the fortress is also secure. Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis remains firmly under our control. Once battle begins, the Oasis will keep sending reinforcements without end.”
Kent’s work was always thorough. Having once served for years as the regent high priest of the Serpent Empire, his hold over Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis was unshakable.
Their answers finally allowed General Sost to breathe a little easier.
“Good. Then all we can do now is wait for Charles to return. I wonder if he’s managed to wipe out the members of the Ancient Academy.”
In truth, Sost didn’t believe Charles could completely destroy them. His only hope was that Charles could keep the Ancient Academy tied down.
Zara and Kent kept silent. They honestly didn’t know what to say.
Charles had already gone off to hunt freely, and they had indeed passed their latest intelligence to him at once. But when he would return—that was something no one could be sure of.
As the three fell into silence, Azka strode in.
“Everyone, Stellar Empire’s mystical beasts have appeared in the skies. Their Beast Master troops have already begun moving. We must respond at once!”
The Beast Masters were the quickest to react.
The Stellar Empire’s Beast Master troops immediately began scouting the area around Withered Tree Fortress.
Of course, General Sost would never allow the Stellar Empire to fully grasp all the details about the fortress. He quickly turned to Azka.
“Launch a counterattack at once! If your strength isn’t enough, I’ll send others to support you.”
“Yes, sir! I’ll deal with those human Beast Masters right now!”
With that, Azka rushed out.
Watching Azka’s back disappear, General Sost let out a quiet sigh.
“I wonder how many Serpent soldiers will still be alive after this war is over.”
His low words made the expressions on Zara and High Priest Kent’s faces even heavier. They both knew Sost’s fear was justified.
After a long silence, Zara suddenly spoke.
“I don’t think we need to be so pessimistic. Charles will definitely create a miracle.”
She still chose to put her faith in Charles. After all, it was Charles who had brought back the Tears of an Angel to cure the Serpent Queen’s curse.
Even though many unexpected problems had followed, it was clear those troubles weren’t caused by Charles—they were all Aldany’s schemes.
Sost and Kent said nothing. They too hoped Charles could work a miracle, but they both knew they had to prepare for the worst.
While the three in the Serpent Empire were worrying about the coming battle, Charles was only just breaking free from the stasis of time.
“Good thing you arrived when you did. If you’d been any later, I would’ve needed much longer to escape.”
Charles smiled as he reached out to pat his mystical beast’s head. He was more than satisfied with their performance.
At least when danger came, his beasts, led by Mousie, had acted right away.
“What a pity… I almost killed Julian. If I had finished him off, the threat from the Ancient Academy would be nothing to worry about.”
Charles muttered to himself with some regret.
Julian was the most gifted member of the Ancient Academy he had met in the Atacama Desert. If Julian hadn’t come after him, he never would’ve been defeated.
And if Julian had chosen to ambush him after a large-scale battle broke out, Charles could have easily been placed in real danger. After all, time-related abilities were truly terrifying.
Thinking of this, Charles turned his gaze toward the unmoving Chrono Rabbit.
“Your master has abandoned you. From now on, you can only serve under me. If you’re willing to submit, just blink once.”
Charles felt his words were already sincere enough. The Chrono Rabbit had attacked him several times before. For a mystical beast that had tried to take his life, allowing it to surrender was already more than merciful.
But to Charles’s surprise, the Chrono Rabbit didn’t move at all. That silence meant rejection.
“You still dare refuse me?! Then it seems I have no choice but to make you mine by force!”
Charles immediately ordered Mousie and Rainbow to attack the Chrono Rabbit.
Normally, forming a contract with a mystical beast required the beast’s approval. But in rare cases—like this one—when the beast absolutely refused, a Beast Master could beat it into weakness and then force a contract at its lowest point.
Mousie and Rainbow didn’t hesitate for a second. They launched their strongest skills directly at the Chrono Rabbit.
Yet none of their attacks worked. The Chrono Rabbit used a stream of chaotic time to build a barrier, and all strikes were nullified the moment they touched it.
“Looks like I’ll have to handle this myself.”
Charles’s voice turned cold as he struck at the Chrono Rabbit personally.
But even his attack failed to break through. The time currents that the Chrono Rabbit had summoned were too strong to pierce in such a short time.
Staring at the creature sealed away inside its swirl of time, Charles finally chose to leave it alone.
“It seems there’s no way to tame the Chrono Rabbit quickly,” he sighed.
Just then, a message came from Zara.
“The Stellar Empire is moving at last. The crown prince couldn’t hold his patience! Still, this is fine. It just means I can crush their army sooner.”
With that, Charles swiftly set off for Withered Tree Fortress, bringing along his mystical beasts and the sealed Chrono Rabbit.
At the same time, Julian finally reached a safe place. His condition was terrible. Without help, there was no way he could take part in the massive battle about to begin.
And after his fight with Charles, Julian had also come to a painful realization—there was a huge gap between them. Against someone like Charles, a true prodigy, there was no chance he could win through tricks or clever schemes alone.
“I was still too careless. I should have known long ago that a genius like Charles could never be defeated so easily. I should have stuck to the safest plan from the start.”
After his failure, Julian finally came to his senses.
With his own strength alone, victory was impossible. The only way was to return to the original plan—rely on the combined power of many Ancient Academy members to bring Charles down.
Once he understood this, he began contacting the others.
Although many members of the Ancient Academy had already been hunted by Charles, quite a few were still alive. Among the survivors were some who were still quite strong.
If he could gather these people together, Julian believed they could still pose a real threat to Charles.
The first to arrive was Andrew.
This shocked Julian, because he had clearly sent Andrew to make contact with the Stellar Empire.
“How did you get here so quickly? Weren’t you supposed to be with the Stellar Empire?”
Julian asked in surprise.
Andrew didn’t answer right away. He decided to change the subject. After all, he had no intention of letting Julian know that he had failed to gain the full trust of the Stellar Empire’s crown prince.
After a moment of thought, Andrew smiled and said,
“The Stellar Empire is already prepared. There was no need for me to stay there any longer. Their attack will begin in just a couple of days, so I came back to help you. You look rather miserable right now.
What happened? Couldn’t you find the one hunting our Ancient Academy members? Or did you find him, but fail to defeat him in battle?”
Hearing Andrew’s question, Julian gave a bitter smile.
“I found him. The one hunting us is Charles. But when I faced him, I was defeated.”
