- Chapter 683 683: Another Overconfident Fool

After a night of rest, Anke left the Gold Fortress early the next morning.
He believed that the sooner he eliminated Charles, the more important he would become in Everett’s eyes. So, he had to act quickly.
Half an hour after Anke left the Gold Fortress, Harbor also quietly slipped out.
Maxwell wanted to follow, but Harbor didn’t allow him to come along.
After all, Maxwell was still too weak. In the course of their mission, he would be easy to spot.
Although Maxwell was disappointed, he had no choice but to follow Harbor’s orders. In the end, he stayed behind at Gold Fortress to manage the other Ancient Academy members.
Having grown familiar with the Atacama Desert during the journey, Anke quickly found the nearest path to Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis.
By the afternoon, he had successfully reached the oasis.
“Are you planning to charge straight into Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis to challenge Charles? Isn’t that a bit too arrogant?” Harbor, who had been monitoring Anke from a distance, found Anke’s behavior strange.
It seemed like Anke was heading straight into the oasis to face Charles in a one-on-one battle.
But that approach was incredibly reckless.
There were many Serpents inside Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis.
Among them were some of the most powerful warriors.
Though Anke stood a good chance against these elite Serpent warriors individually, if they fought alongside Charles, Anke would be at a severe disadvantage.
Even Harbor wouldn’t dare to challenge Charles in that situation.
“Looks like you’re just another self-important, arrogant fool.”
Harbor’s judgment was clear.
He thought Anke had no real skills.
Just then, Anke suddenly vanished from Harbor’s line of sight.
Harbor was stunned.
He quickly scanned the area, trying to spot Anke’s whereabouts.
But there was no way he could find him—because Anke had already entered the underground area.
Anke had never intended to march directly into Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis to confront Charles.
The night before, he hadn’t simply been resting as Harbor had assumed.
While asleep, Anke used his mystical beast, the Rainbow Serpent, to enter the dreams of the Ancient Academy members.
In the dream world, Anke remained fully conscious, while those in the dream could only act on instinct. This allowed him to gather a wealth of information from the members of the Ancient Academy.
He realized that beneath Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis lay a complex underground network.
He also understood that he absolutely could not break into Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis from the surface.
So in the end, Anke decided to enter the oasis through the underground area. This way, he could catch Charles and the others completely off guard.
Anke had already traveled a long distance through the underground passages by the time Harbor finally reacted.
“Looks like I underestimated him a little. But he still won’t succeed.”
Although Harbor had figured out that Anke had most likely entered the underground area, he would never follow him down there.
From his previous battle, he already knew how dangerous the underground beneath Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis was.
And he had worked with Aldany for a period of time. Aldany had unintentionally revealed a great deal of information.
Even Aldany, a High Priest of the Serpent Empire, didn’t dare stay too long in the underground network. For anyone else to enter it meant facing even greater danger.
“I’ll just wait here and see what you can really do.”
A faint smile appeared on Harbor’s face.
He decided to stay near the edge of Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis and wait for the coming battle.
In his opinion, no matter what, the oasis would fall into chaos because of Anke’s actions.
And even though the ceasefire agreement with Charles prevented him from acting directly, that didn’t mean he couldn’t do a few other things to cause even more destruction to the oasis.
After about half an hour moving through the complex tunnels, Anke finally reached the area he knew best.
This section lay right below the residential zone of Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis.
Before officially entering the war between the Stellar Empire and the Serpent Empire, the Ancient Academy had once carried out large-scale exploration here.
Most members of the Ancient Academy had at least some knowledge of this place.
This was why Anke was so familiar with it.
“Charles must be in the core area of Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis. As long as I follow this underground river, I’ll reach the space beneath the Great Pyramid.”
Anke whispered to himself as he continued forward.
He believed his plan was going perfectly.
Up to this point, his presence had not been discovered.
This meant he could go straight into the very center of Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis—into the heart of the Serpent Empire.
Just as he was feeling confident that his plan was a huge success, a strange noise suddenly echoed through the underground river.
It was an odd sound.
Anke immediately stopped.
After listening carefully for a moment, he finally let out a sigh of relief.
“It’s just the Sandworms! I didn’t expect there to be Sandworms in the underground of Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis! And they’re swimming in the underground river too.”
Anke muttered to himself with a smile.
But the moment he finished speaking, the smile vanished from his face.
“That’s strange! How can Sandworms swim?!”
Just then, two Sandworms appeared at the end of the underground river.
As soon as they showed up, they let out a screech and charged at Anke.
Anke instinctively reacted.
He didn’t plan on summoning a mystical beast right away, as doing so would disrupt his next moves.
Instead, he decided to take them down with his own strength.
He had encountered Sandworms before.
Though their power was much greater than other desert creatures, Anke was confident he could quickly kill these two.
The battle between Anke and the Sandworms caused loud noises.
Not far from the battlefield, the group of Sandworms controlled by Chrono Rabbit began to act out of control.
The Sandworms were restlessly moving.
Despite Chrono Rabbit’s best efforts, it still couldn’t control all of them.
In the end, several Sandworms broke free and charged down the underground river.
With the situation spiraling out of control, Chrono Rabbit had no choice but to inform Charles of the unexpected turn of events.
At that moment, Charles was discussing with General Sost whether to destroy the other Stellar Empire fortresses outside of Gold Fortress.
“I don’t think we should do that. We should focus all our strength on Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis. Splitting our forces to take other actions could lead to unforeseen losses,” Sost said, ever the risk-taker, but even he felt that Charles’s suggestion was too dangerous.
He believed that the Serpent Empire’s remaining forces were already limited. They couldn’t afford to take such a huge risk by dividing their forces.
Charles sighed.
“You make a valid point, but if we only defend Serpent’s Eye Lake Oasis without weakening the enemy’s forces before the final battle, we’ll face even more pressure during the fight,” Charles voiced his concerns.
“You should know, the Stellar Empire’s army is growing in numbers. In the next few days, they will definitely send more reinforcements into the Atacama Desert.”
Although General Sost understood Charles’s worry, he still held to his own view.
Charles was about to continue persuading him when, suddenly, he received a message from Chrono Rabbit.
“The Sandworm group is in turmoil! How did this happen? Has the curse in the underground river spread?”
Charles was stunned. He had thought everything had been properly arranged. Normally, there shouldn’t have been any disturbances with the Sandworm group.
“The Sandworm group is causing problems. I need to go handle it right away!”
With the Sandworms in trouble, Charles had no choice but to stop arguing with General Sost.
He decided to make his way to the underground area as quickly as possible to resolve the issue with the Sandworms.
Sost nodded.
“Go quickly.”
Charles immediately sped off toward the underground area.
Before he even reached the area where the Sandworms were located, he sensed an intense battle taking place below.
“Could the Sandworms have broken free from Chrono Rabbit’s control and started fighting? But why does the battlefield seem so strange?”
Charles didn’t immediately realize that someone had invaded. He instinctively thought the battle was between Chrono Rabbit and the Sandworms.
In this situation, he grew even more anxious.
Moving at full speed, he reached the area where Chrono Rabbit and the Sandworms were within minutes.
Though the Sandworm group was still agitated, most of the Sandworms hadn’t lost control.
“Most of the Sandworms are still calm! That means something else has invaded the underground area!”
Charles figured it out the moment he saw the scene.
Without hesitation, he ran straight toward the battlefield.
