GREED: ALL FOR WHAT? - Chapter 2223 - 2223: Defense Galore.

It was a good thing that Thieving went directly for the kill because Mirlo noticed it as soon as he began to fall through the air.
Mirlo’s raw physical power, including his Perception attribute, was very high. So he heard the sound of a large object falling from above his head and sensed the impending danger.
Mirlo rolled out of the way. It was a slight movement of his body, but his body burst with immense power and made him flash across the room.
But before he could go far, Black Hammer had used Mental Armament on him. Wisps of mental energy from Black Hammer’s mind tranformed into sharp needles and sailed towards Mirlo.
Sharp needle formed out of invisible mental power attacked him one after the other. They were invisible so he didn’t notice them.
Mirlo was far stronger than the two of them, but he still didn’t sense the attack and wasn’t able to defend against it at all. He might have died immediately if not for the fact that he had a divine artifact in his possession that protected his mind and was always activating it for moments like this.
This divine artifact was in the form of a ring. It was made from the body of a rank 4 telepath. So it only contained the first three divine flesh of the pathway of the telepath.
These three divine flesh didn’t have the power of the Mental Armament divine ability, so the best they could do was offer some sort of defense for Mirlo’s mind. They couldn’t block the attack completely.
The sharp mental needle pierced through the first, second, and third mental defenses. Apparently, Mirlo had three such mind-defending divine artifacts. Even so, his mind was still hit by the attack.
The defenses of the divine artifacts were as thin as gas, while the attack was as thick as water. No matter how many layers of gas he put up, water was far denser and so could overcome the gas three times in a row.
The three divine artifacts drained a lot of his spiritual energy but failed to stop the mental attack. However, they succeeded in diminishing the attack and preventing Mirlo from being killed instantly by a single attack.
Mirlo was only stunned briefly. He felt immense pain in his mind, but he could push past the pain and control his body to either counterattack or escape.
Unfortunately for him, there were two attackers, not one. While the mental attack had failed to kill him, it had made Mirlo pause in his actions. And since Legion had never been counting on the mental attack to kill Mirlo, this pause in Mirlo’s actions was an opportunity that they didn’t miss.
Mirlo paused slightly. He didn’t stop completely. Since he was running earlier, his body was still moving forward even though he was distracted. He was only using his inertia to continue moving.
This inertia wasn’t enough for him to evade the red and bloody tentacles rushing after him. The tentacles were bloody and red because they were made from Thieving Hammer’s blood. But their eerie nature became worse because their tips were glowing red.
The bloody tentacles sprouted from Thieving Hammer’s torso. But the reason why their tip was glowing was because Sever was being used through them.
Sever is a divine ability that can injure rank 9 godclads with a single contact. Yet, four tentacles were bringing it over to Mirlo from halfway across the room.
When Mirlo came to, he saw the tentacles approaching him. His eyes widened in horror because it was too late for him to dodge or escape.
The best that he could do was activate his last protective measure. A purple Aegis Shield appeared around him. Then his eyes froze in fright when the tentacle touched his body and entered it.
The tentacles were blindingly fast. They broke through the Aegis Shield created by the defensive divine artifact on his body and sank into his flesh like a hot knife cutting through butter.
One would expect such an injury to cause someone to scream. But that wasn’t what happened to Mirlo.
Mirlo had frozen because Stun was used on him. This ability made him incapable of moving to escape for his life. He just stood there as the bloody tentacles stirred his insides and turned his organs into slush.
Actually, it was more accurate to call the tentacles leeches because they were also capable of devouring the blood of whoever they touched. As the tentacles engorged themselves on Milor’s blood, they became bigger and more ruthless.
When the tentacles became bigger, their surface area increased, which increased the area of contact between Mirlo’s internal organs and the Sever divine ability used on the tentacles.
This change turned the tentacles from sharp blades into sharp clubs. Rather than cut Mirlo up, the tentacles were bludgeoning him to death from within.
While this was going on, Black Hammer stayed back to gauge the overall situation while Thieving Hammer moved closer to Mirlo to finish what he had started.
There was nothing Mirlo could do to stop what was going to happen. Things would have been different if he had a lot of spiritual energy to use the defensive divine artifacts made from the bodies of epic undying godclads.
Unfortunately, he didn’t have a lot of spiritual energy, so he only actively used the divine artifact to protect his mind instead of the Aegis Shield because it consumed less spiritual energy to maintain.
His usual plan was to switch to Aegis Shield when an attack does happen. But things happened too fast. By the time he switched to Aegis Shield, he had used up most of his spiritual energy to defend against the many mental attacks that Black Hammer sent his way.
Those mental attacks didn’t manage to kill him, but his safety from them came at a great cost. So when it was time for him to pay the cost to use the undying divine artifacts, he didn’t have the spiritual energy to do so.
