Chapter 488 – Deck of Providence [1]
“…I didn’t mean to kiss you.”
The Pale Lady’s eyes remained like those of death. She said nothing, only fixed her pale, cracking, veiny eyes on the smiling Noah.
Smiling, but only Noah knew the tremor rattling through his bones like a blade. It was becoming exceedingly difficult to keep his relaxed face in front of the Pale Lady.
And that difficulty increased the longer he looked at her, trying to examine the strange being in front of him.
The Pale Lady was tall and lithe, with no body fat on her, making a show of slithering veins marking her whole body.
Just as her name suggested, everything about her was immaculately white – from her eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and hair.
She wore a long, white-flowered regal robe that framed her body. It was annoyingly long, carpeting the ground beneath her into piled folds of silk-like canvas.
Her eyes slowly peeled away from Noah, looking at the space she found herself trapped in.
It was all crimson-gold, with nothing else except moving energy that held the very origin of a Reality.
She recognized the energy and its scent, making her connect the link between Noah and Gaia easily. Her brow furrowed, a trace of wrath and annoyance painting her face for a brief instant.
Calming herself, she turned her attention back to Noah.
He smiled, albeit in a strained manner.
“Are you ready to talk now?” He asked.
“Who are you?” She spoke, her voice deceptively sweet. She sounded like the girl next door you always wished to talk to.
However, the very sound of it made Noah almost forget the voices of any other beings or non-beings he might have heard since he was born.
Only his strong Will helped him block the power of the Pale Lady. He unconsciously staggered one step backward, looking at her with slightly widened eyes.
Noah saw nothing on her face, and chillingly realized that she didn’t even mean it as an attack. It was simply the effect of her talking, and him not being able to withstand the natural power hidden inside it.
He cursed internally, gathering himself back together.
“This is going to be bothersome! He whispered inwardly.
“Who am I?” He finally answered, not willing to let his smile wear off, “It’s a difficult question, and you might not want to hear me do my own biography. I can be very self-absorbed.”
“An offspring of Gaia.” The Pale Lady said matter-of-factly, causing Noah to stare at her in surprise.
“How do you know?”
“This question of yours not only confirms my thoughts but also indicates your ridiculous ignorance about her recent actions.” She said, seeming to grin coldly, “So you have been used. For what?”
She looked around her, sensing a kind of absolute power pressing on her from all sides like clothes. A power that she could not shrug off because of how premature the vessel of her Main Self was.
She had no choice but to accept it.
The more she thought about it, the more the Pale Lady imagined all kinds of atrocities she would deliver upon Gaia.
The Will Eternal thought herself safe.
‘Oh, foolish thing, too young to peer into me. I was there, conscious, when The Interpreters began to interpret. I was there, watching, when their comprehension condensed into Seed. I was there, lurking, when you came to be! I was there, laughing, when the Tree of Knowledge sprouted from His navel!’
Too young, Will Eternal. Too, too young.
It was one thing to fool her because of impatience and greed, and another to believe that Gaia could predict her actions in anger.
She would learn the price of going against her. A price steeper than she could afford. And the Pale Lady would begin with her son.
‘And oh… a son? Oh, how fabulously heretical!’
She focused back on Noah, then for the first time smiled. It was a cold, humorless smile.
“What are the conditions of this place, Son of Heretic?”
Noah cocked his head to the side, frowning not only at the way the
Pale Lady called him, but also at the fact that she knew.
It was true. His Last Blessing was a troublesome thing.
He was able to bring anyone inside his consciousness, and the only way for either one to exit this place was through a condition.
A condition that existed for both of them.
The Blessing came with its own set of rules, and Noah used to direct
the direction the condition would take.
He decided it would be a simple game. Just like how his mother Gaia
loved it.
So he raised his right hand, palm facing upward. Willing it, a black box appeared and fell onto his palm with a loud tak.
The surrounding primeval energy churned and formed a small table between them, and two zabuton – pale for the Pale Lady and crimson-gold for Noah – appeared at each side.
The box left Noah’s grasp and placed itself in the middle of the table. Wordlessly, Noah hunched himself over and sat on his zabuton.
The Pale Lady did the same, her eyes never leaving the box in the
process.
Once the two of them were settled, a small jar and two teacups appeared on the table, to the right side.
The jar opened, letting out a rich, sweet smell that made the Pale
Lady tear her eyes off the box and stare at it.
Noah seemed to see curiosity flash inside the Pale Lady’s eyes.
She regained herself and now looked at Noah.
“Will you explain, or will you just stare, Son of Heretic?”
“Why Son of Heretic?”
“You are Son of Heretic.”
“Will you not explain?”
“Will you explain or not?”
Noah shut his mouth, looking at the Pale Lady for a moment before
taking the box.
“I don’t know who you are or where you came from, my lady.” Noah
said, his smile returning to his lips, “But I do hope you know how to
play a game.”
The box opened, spilling out brilliant light.
“I present to you the Deck of Providence.” Noah whispered,
<So you didn’t forget about me.>
‘I would never, darling!
Noah’s smile deepened at the hmph of Providence echoing in his
mind, and he continued his words while looking at the Pale Lady. “The principle is simple. You win, you get out of here and take
everything from me. And if I win, I take everything from you.”
The Pale Lady laughed.
“Your level of ignorance is almost adorable. Everything from me?” Her
eyes grew colder, her face cracking as if something alien, horrific, and nightmarish was trying to claw out of her face.
Her voice shifted, becoming something that made all of Noah’s orifices bleed furiously.
“Are you aware of what you have in front of you?”
Noah grinned coldly through his bleeding face, eyes never leaving the
Pale Lady.
“I shall know soon.”
