Chapter 490 Deck of Providence [3]
The moment Pale started, the game seemed to transform into something greater.
It no longer looked like a chess game with pawns, but instead like real living people fighting and parrying the attacks of others in a beautiful, lethal dance.
They looked like they had real feelings, and that was when Noah knew it was bad when Pale immediately tried to take down his Queen.
The Queen’s face shifted into a frightened look.
Having already acted, Noah could now play. And he did by making his Knight move, blocking the strike of Pale’s Herald.
She smiled sinisterly, using the Herald’s bloodlust nature to create true chaos, making Noah’s Knight struggle under the continuous pressure.
Realizing that at this rhythm he would soon lose his Knight and eventually his Queen, Noah used his Priest.
Instantly, a sound seemed to ripple through the chessboard, causing the Knight to be enhanced with sudden vigor. He managed to fend off the Herald, permitting the Queen to run toward the Priest.
Pale did the same with her Priest to counteract, but Noah had already acted again, using his own Herald to strike a decisive blow at Pale’s Herald.
The man visibly shrieked, and Noah smiled.
“Why are you smiling?”
Pale’s voice echoed coldly inside Noah’s head, and his eyes widened as he saw Pale’s Herald explode himself, bringing Noah’s Herald with him.
Both of them felt an immediate weakness.
<The Heralds of the two players are now dead.>
Yet it was not over.
“Wait-!”
Noah didn’t even have time to gather himself as Pale’s Knight ripped through the chessboard like a straight line, sword high in the sky before chopping down on his King.
Faster than he believed possible, Noah’s Knight left the side of the Queen and managed to deflect the attack just enough to save the King.
But in the process, the Knight was fatally wounded, causing him to fall to his knees, bleeding furiously.
Noah’s heart skipped a beat, and Pale’s grin widened as she used her Knight to behead the King.
The effect was like a hammer blow in Noah’s mind. His King died as easily as breathing, his Knight slowly dying too.
<The King of Player Noah is dead. Immediate weakness over all other pawns.>
Pale was already smiling, her eyes shining with confidence as her Knight turned to finish Noah’s Knight.
At that instant, Noah’s eyes snapped toward the rest of his pawns. All of them seemed on the verge of giving up, having lost their King.
And he knew that if even the Knight died, then he was doomed.
‘Fucking hell. Noah cursed, seeing the Queen about to fall beside the trembling Priest and the Soldier-!
Noah’s thoughts halted immediately as he finally noticed the Soldier. His face twisted as a ridiculous thought blossomed inside his mind. He acted immediately on it.
“Priest, the King is dead! A ruler is needed, marry the Queen and the Soldier together!” he ordered.
Pale cocked her head in confusion.
Noah’s Priest acted immediately while the two Knights were battling each other, his own Knight about to die.
All of a sudden, a brilliant crimson-gold light bloomed on Noah’s side, followed by Providence’s voice.
<The Queen and the Soldier of Noah are now married. The Soldier is now King, but not just any King. He has become the Warmonger King.>
Pale’s eyes widened, and Noah would have been a goddamn fool not to use the momentum he had just gained.
“My Warmonger, fucking go!”
The light disappeared, and in place of the Soldier stood a man in armor that shone like that of bloodthirsty warriors, with a scimitar worthy of a King.
The Queen stood beside him, renewed with energy, and the Priest was singing in joy, boosting the Warmonger’s power even further. He acted immediately, faster than anything, and killed Pale’s Knight. <The Knight of Player Pale is now dead.>
At the same time, he took Noah’s Knight and threw him toward the Priest to be healed.
Pale panicked instantly, seeing the Warmonger moving straight
toward her King.
Knowing the uselessness of protecting her King, she abandoned him shamelessly and moved the Queen toward the Priest.
“Wishing to do the same as me?” Noah snickered.
Instead of killing the King, his Warmonger instantly pivoted and ran
toward the Historian.
At the same time,
“Marry the Soldier and the Queen!” Pale bellowed at her Priest in
haste.
But nothing happened. The Queen refused to marry while the King was still alive, and the Priest and Soldier were too loyal.
<Conditions for marriage not fulfilled.>
By the time she realized her mistake, Noah’s Warmonger King was already upon the Historian.
“He is an Historian,” Noah said, his mind spinning fast. “Don’t kill him,
capture him!”
The Warmonger obeyed, capturing the scribbling Historian in haste
before returning to his territory.
Providence’s voice echoed once more.
<The Historian of Pale is abducted. Player Noah can now gain critical
information about the game.>
Pale’s face lost all color. She slowly lifted her head from the
chessboard, watching Noah’s grin with irritation.
The game paused, waiting for Noah to ask what kind of information
he wished to have.
But Pale knew that with the current situation, Noah was not foolish
enough not to ask the one question that would help him win easily.
That thought should have been depressing and stressful – and it was – but Pale refused to abandon hope.
“Don’t waste time, Son of Heretic,” she said, trying to keep her voice calm and steady. “Ask the question and let the game follow its course.”
“Then you will lose.”
“The game is not over yet,” she said, looking at him with her pale eyes. “I can still win.”
Noah fell silent, returning the stare unflinchingly. He knew it was still
possible, and that having information didn’t necessarily mean being able to act on it.
Still, Noah would not show his uncertainty openly. He smiled
confidently.
“You better think of what you will do when I win,” he said. “In contrast
to you, I will give you the right to choose your fate between three
choices.”
“One more choice than me,” Pale sneered. “How generous of you, Son
of Heretic.”
“I know. I’m called that a lot.”
“You’re getting rather talkative. Are you worried, perhaps?” Pale said
with a low, cold grin.
Noah shrugged, then immediately used his right to ask a critical piece
of information about the game.
The exchange was secret, making Pale shift on her feet, dying to
know what Noah had asked.
But it was impossible, and her heart sank at the sight of Noah’s grin.
“How sweet,” he whispered as the paused game resumed. “Let’s
continue.”
Pale didn’t answer, nor did she act, still staring at him. Then mechanically she lowered her head toward her remaining pawns. She clicked her tongue, seeing the tense atmosphere in her territory
after her failed attempt to marry the Soldier and the Queen while the King was still alive.
‘I need to make the situation better,’ she thought, then slowly…
“I use my Soldier to promote into a Knight,” she said, realizing it was
what she should have done instead of making him King.
At her words,
<Acknowledged.>
The Soldier’s appearance changed to that of a Knight, the protector
of the Queen.
Noah acted next, shouting with dramatic intensity.
“Priest, my Knight acted faithfully and protected the Queen and the
fallen King! He is worthy! Let the Light shine down and bless him!” <Conditions fulfilled. The Knight of Player Noah will be updated to Divine Knight.>
“What-!”
Light shone once more, and when it faded, Pale watched with dread
as the Warmonger King and the Divine Knight stood side by side.
Noah grinned. “I am not done yet!”
“The Priest has done worthy deeds by saving the Knight and marrying
the sad Queen! Let the Light shine and evolve him!” <Conditions sufficient. The Priest of Player Noah will now become a High Priest.>
Pale’s heart dropped, watching Noah’s lineup ripple with power. However,
“Tut, tut, tut. I am not done yet, my lady.”
Pale’s eyes widened, and she shouted at Providence, “No! This is
getting-!”
“I have two Historians!” Noah laughed. “Make my Historian learn
everything from the other and evolve him!”
<Conditions sufficient. The Historian of Player Noah will become Keeper of Records.>
Pale fell backward, staring listlessly at the sky.
Noah grinned.
“Ah, now this is better than your confident face. Let’s end this game,
darling, shall we?”
