“Okay… when did I get a stat buff!?”
Elion stared at the panel with a deadpan expression. He thought he had misread it at first, but after checking again, he realised he had not.
He hadn’t levelled up, and levelling up was usually the only way his individual stats grew.
Unless this had somehow been caused by the experience he had gained from slaying demons, which had somehow already amounted to twenty thousand, there was no obvious reason for the sudden jump.
He gave it some thought, and after a while, he remembered that moment he touched Kurogoroshi, that sudden surge of overflowing strength he had felt.
The power that had filled his body so intensely, yet had still not dissipated even now, which meant it was permanent.
Elion slowly raised a hand to his face and facepalmed. It was so obvious, and yet, here he was racking his mind over it.
There was also the fact that Kurogoroshi had been added to the list as a soulbound weapon. Other than that, nothing else had changed.
He had already taken note of his new skills earlier, so there was no need to dwell on them too much.
With 73,000 system points, he could raise his level twice at most.
’I should keep a few points just in case…’
Nodding to himself, he ran the command and converted the system points into experience points.
56,000 points were deducted.
[You have levelled up!]
[You have levelled up!]
A brief, minuscule rise in strength flowed through his body.
It was noticeable, but compared to what he had felt after claiming Kurogoroshi, it was barely anything.
After checking his stats again and confirming that each one had only risen by a range of fourteen to twenty points, Elion sighed deeply and closed the system panel.
After that, he lay silently on the bed thinking. A little over a month had passed since he woke up in this trial, more than two months, if he counted the head start the others had gotten before him.
That wasn’t what had him thinking, though. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t a little anxious about what might be happening back home.
He slowly stretched one hand into the air, staring at the back of it in silence.
“I wonder how the others are doing…”
…
Elion stepped forward into a large paved open court filled with the light but vibrant sounds of different cooing mounts.
The sun was only just peaking over the horizon in the east, near the place where the ocean and the land met.
He had already dressed for the journey, and after a messenger from Alexander had informed him that it was time, he had been led out of the palace, past the inner court, and here.
He spotted the prince a short distance away, standing with a few others in front of one of the caged shelters built into the side of the mountain, where hundreds of different mounts were kept.
Elion adjusted his steps in that direction, then nodded to his escort.
“I’ll be fine from here, thank you.”
He thanked the young boy who had been sent by the prince to call him and walked forward. The boy bowed to Elion with sparkling eyes before leaving.
Elion caught sight of a figure approaching hurriedly from the side, holding the hem of her dress in one hand.
“Elion!”
She shouted his name, thinking he had not noticed her. Elion paused and turned her way. Isla stopped in front of him, bending slightly as she held onto her knees, a little out of breath.
She looked ragged, like she hadn’t slept, and he could also see that even though it looked like she had tried to somewhat fix her appearance, she certainly hadn’t bathed this morning.
He gave her a moment to gather herself.
“Ahh… sorry to keep you,” she said quickly. “I must be wasting your time.”
She hurriedly pulled something out of her dress, balling it into her fist before presenting it to him.
“Here.”
Her voice trembled slightly.
“I’m… I’m sorry about yesterday. I-I panicked, and I didn’t know what to do… and… and it’s just all so new to me that I…I’m so stupid and immature, I…”
“Isla.”
Elion interrupted her gently as he opened her fist and took the item into his own hand.
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it,” he said with a soft smile, “We can take as much time as you need. It’s fine.”
Isla looked up at his handsome face, her eyes carrying a deeply lovestruck look. She suddenly leaped into his arms.
The movement caught Elion off guard, awkwardly pushing him off balance for a moment, but he managed to keep both of them standing.
“Careful there,” he said lightly as he wrapped one hand around her slim waist. She held onto him tightly for a long while without saying a word.
Elion could feel the softness of her breasts pressing onto his chest, and with it, he could also feel the rapid beating of her heart.
“Don’t die,” she whispered finally, shifting a bit and hiding her face against his chest.
Elion laughed softly, “That’s a red flag, you know.”
He gently rubbed her back.
“Hasn’t anyone ever told you not to say that to someone going to war?”
“Shut up,” she murmured quietly.
Then her grip tightened slightly.
“Just… come back to me when it’s all over…And.” She paused briefly, “A-And I will be ready for you.” She managed to get the words out.
“No doubt about it,” Elion said with a smile.
He pulled back slightly, pausing when he saw the flustered, fragile look on her face. He couldn’t help himself, so he leaned in and pulled her into a soft kiss.
It was brief and gentle. But when he pulled away, Isla was left completely dazed.
“I’ll see you soon,” Elion said softly.
[Love metre – 60% → 99%]
Then he turned and walked away. Only then did he finally look down at the small object she had handed him.
A necklace?
He thought so for a moment until he checked the item’s status.
[Name: Lover’s Pendant]
[Item Type: Enchanted Necklace]
[Grade: Epic Grade]
[Description: A simple necklace made by a princess for her love.]
[Enchantments x3]
[1. Lover’s Sanctuary — Upon receiving a fatal blow, the necklace automatically releases a powerful protective barrier around its wearer, capable of resisting a catastrophic attack far beyond the wielder’s level. The barrier manifests as translucent golden wings folding around the body for a brief moment before shattering into light. It can only activate once every several months.]
[2. Heartbound Resonance — As long as the one who forged the necklace still lives, the wearer’s vitality, mental clarity, and stamina recover at an accelerated rate during battle.]
[3. Promise Against the Dying Light — When the wearer stands at the edge of death, overwhelmed, cornered, or moments away from despair, the necklace ignites with the emotional imprint left behind by its creator, flooding the wearer’s body with overwhelming warmth, suppressing fear, dulling pain, and granting a temporary surge of strength powerful enough to defy certain death for a few final moments.]
Elion stopped walking.
The necklace itself was deceptively simple.
A silver-black chain carrying a deep sapphire crystal wrapped in delicate golden filigree shaped like intertwining wings.
However, he could almost feel the emotions it carried; just holding it made him feel a faint sheen of warmth wrap around his body. He looked back hurriedly, only to find that Isla was already gone.
He spotted her vanish behind a pillar in the distance. A quiet sigh escaped him; he couldn’t follow her, right?
His gaze returned to the gift resting in his palm.
’Did she spend all night making this?’
The thought came quietly. It would explain her exhaustion, the hurry, and her nervousness. The fact certainly warmed his heart. Before he even realised it, a smile had formed on his face.
Gently, he unclasped the little loop and placed the necklace around his neck. The sapphire crystal rested against his chest.
He turned it a few times in his hand, looking at it silently, before finally pushing it beneath his tunic. Only then did he continue walking toward the group waiting for him.
When he reached them, he was met with a wide range of differing expressions. The most obvious belonged to Alexander.
The prince wore brilliant silver armour and stood beside his mount, gripping the reins tightly while glaring at Elion as if he had just witnessed something unforgivable.
The other five people, all armoured as well, were staring at Elion with clear shock and awe. He could practically read their thoughts from their expressions alone.
’Did this guy just kiss the princess in broad daylight!?’
