- Chapter 318 - 318: Signs Of The End?

Kyle cleared the air with Calista, and this gave her reassurance, reminding her of her place by his side. But to him, she was also the perfect cover he needed at this time.
He knew he had to be careful, as things were taking a turn for the worse—there was no going back. Death could come for him at any moment, and the rebate system wouldn’t save him. That was why Kyle opened his phone, determined to digest anything on the internet that could potentially be of use.
Fighting techniques, shooting ranges, dexterity with all types of weapons—including kenjutsu. Kyle wasn’t taking any chances. There was nothing he couldn’t learn, so why not learn everything? He had to be ready for the worst-case scenario. Yet, there was one thing missing in all of this: the uncertainty of what kind of damage the families could inflict.
He had to prevent things from escalating, because it wasn’t the rich who would suffer the effects of this war—it would be the poor. And that was something Kyle wasn’t going to let happen. If anyone could do something about it, it was him.
However, his phone buzzed shortly after, and the message was from the same unknown number that had been watching him.
“Cleopatra?” Kyle muttered under his breath, though he had no reason to respond. He had to be careful. Cleopatra had been watching him for reasons he could only attribute to being used as a sword to cut down Marcello.
If that was the case, then replying might actually be in his best interest. But he didn’t have time to respond—or rather, he couldn’t. It was a private number. Yet, he didn’t need to. The phone buzzed again, and this time the message was brutally clear.
[[They know.]]
Kyle’s heart dropped the moment he read it. He understood exactly what that meant. He had seen how they dealt with betrayal before—dismembered bodies, body parts distributed across cities like they were cargo. If this was true, there was no telling what they’d do, even though Kyle had already moved Cassandra and Jane out of harm’s way.
He had to cut ties with everyone temporarily, because this was the worst-case scenario. And even then, there was no guarantee it would be enough. He had no idea how much these people knew about him, or how far their reach extended. Still, Kyle had already told Alfredo about the mole. That should buy him some time, because there was no way they wouldn’t want to know what he knew.
Kyle was certain of one thing—he was going to live. If they knew about his association with Cleopatra, it was only a matter of time before the noose tightened. Kyle thought about calling Priscilla, but it became painfully clear—he couldn’t do this alone.
He drove around the city to clear his head. There was one thing he couldn’t deny: he was scared out of his mind. Death had always been a theoretical possibility, something he toyed with in thought, but now… it suddenly became very real.
Kyle couldn’t afford to lose this fight. It wouldn’t just be him who suffered—it would ripple across everyone he cared about. His anchors to this wretched world could be dragged into danger, and that didn’t sit well with him. Still, his objective hadn’t changed. And there was one man who could help him.
Nakamura.
Kyle didn’t know much about him, but he did know one thing: there was no profit for Nakamura if a war broke out.
“They really tried to kill her?” Nakamura muttered under his breath, fingers tracing the rim of his glass. He was alone, but there was something different about him. The look on his face wasn’t serious at all—it was amused.
Cleopatra was not the kind of woman you failed to kill. If they wanted her dead, there would be no second chance. And yet, they had missed. A mistake they would pay for, because Cleopatra would bite back twice as hard.
Her reach extended both on the surface and in the underground, and the proof of that was obvious—the politician currently trying to butter her up, hoping she’d support his campaign.
Nakamura’s phone rang. An unsaved number flashed across the screen, but when he picked up, there was a flicker of familiarity in his gaze. He didn’t speak for a long while, listening intently to the person on the other end. Then, slowly, his lips curved into a smile.
“Is that so?” Nakamura asked, the words more rhetorical than genuine. Whoever was on the other end had just told him exactly what he wanted to hear. The conversation ended shortly after.
Yuki entered the room, catching the strange shift in Nakamura’s demeanor. She didn’t press him on it, instead coming forward to announce he had a visitor. Nakamura wasn’t expecting anyone, but the name she mentioned piqued his interest.
And in walked Kyle. One glance was enough for Nakamura to know something was wrong.
“Did something happen?” Nakamura asked, his sharp eyes narrowing.
Kyle’s gaze flickered briefly toward Yuki. She could tell instantly—this wasn’t the same man she had met before. The air around him was terrifying, oppressive. Nakamura gestured for her to leave, and Yuki complied.
He could feel it. Kyle was unsettled, desperate. Whatever brought him here had to be of utmost importance.
Kyle approached, standing before Nakamura. He knew he had to tell him everything—or at least enough. Kyle needed someone he could trust with this information, and the only person that came to mind was Nakamura.
But he didn’t tell the whole truth. Instead, Kyle delivered an edited version of events. The bottom line was simple: his life was in danger, and he needed Nakamura’s help.
“I have one condition…” Nakamura said at last. Kyle’s brow furrowed. This man in front of him was one of the most dangerous unknown variables he had ever dealt with.
“What is it?” Kyle asked.
But Nakamura only shook his head.
“I’ll tell you when the time comes. Just know—you’ll owe me one.”
Kyle hated to admit it, but he was desperate. He didn’t have much of a choice.
“You have a deal.” Kyle accepted his offer but something told him he just made a deal with the devil.
