Chapter 110: Deathless Legion Summoning Decree Epiphany
After Wei Chen told Jian Heng what he needed, he stood watch over the evacuation on the roof of the stadium along with Max.
He looked toward the clearing just outside the stadium and headed there with Max. After making sure no one was nearby, he took out the Myriad Realms Epiphany Pagoda, injected it with his spirit qi, and tossed it onto the clearing.
With a single spurt of expansion, the pagoda rapidly grew to its full size.
Its size brought both awe and curiosity to all the cultivators who saw it. Some of the wiser ones told the others who the pagoda belonged to, and they quickly retreated from the stadium. Those who did not know but still valued their lives also retreated without hesitation.
Only those who believed they had stumbled upon a once in a lifetime opportunity, and were too foolish to weigh the risks against their lives, stayed behind to see if they could seize the treasure or discover something within the pagoda.
Wei Chen looked up at the fully expanded pagoda with a wry smile. The last time, he had thought the pagoda would be a bit more low key. Who would have thought that something the size of a 1/60 gunpla would suddenly expand like that the moment he wanted to use it?
This time, he injected the spirit qi to signal its use before tossing it out, and it immediately expanded. This was better. At least now he knew what was coming and would not be blindsided like last time.
“Max, can you help me guard the front entrance for a day? Do not allow any idiots to attack my pagoda,” Wei Chen asked.
“Woof!” Max barked, which clearly meant, why should I do that?
“Aww, what a good boy. You are going to do it for me, right? Thanks. Come on, give me your paw,” Wei Chen said with a foolish smile as he extended his hand, blurting out his imagined answer from Max.
Max rolled its eyes in exasperation. This human cook of his was extremely narcissistic. Still, to thank the cook, this wolf king would humor him. With that thought, Max extended its paw to the human cook.
“Oooh, good boy. You are so nice. I will make lots and lots of delicious meals for you. How about German weisswurst and schweinswurst?” Wei Chen cooed as he ruffled Max’s crimson fur.
German weisswurst and schweinswurst? What were those? Some kind of new meat? A new species? Or a human invented dish? Max did not know what it was, but he wanted it. He really wanted it.
“Woof! Woof!” Max barked as his tail wagged excitedly at the mention of the two sausages.
“Alright, boy. Just guard the pagoda for a day and it is a deal. I will find some nice meat to make the sausages for you,” Wei Chen said with a smile before entering the pagoda.
After Wei Chen went inside, Max lay down, licking his lips and dreaming about the mysterious meat his human cook would offer. Would it be the meat of a sky fierce beast? Or the meat of an earth commanding bull?
Whatever the case, those kinds of meat were all top quality. Max had eaten them a few times before, as both beasts were strong and rare. But for his human cook to turn them into heavenly meat, it had to be extraordinary.
While Max was daydreaming, many cultivators blinded by greed and too foolish to discern the risks began gathering. Most of them were at the Foundation Establishment stage, while a few were at the Nascent Soul stage.
Max looked at the humans surrounding it with malicious intent. Its eyes sharpened as its fangs began to extend, and heavenly fire ignited from its fiery red fur.
Before eating that heavenly meat, perhaps a few bites out of these foolish humans flesh would serve as a good appetizer….
Max thought this as its eyes grew hazy with aggression.
…
Within the pagoda, Wei Chen returned to the same cottage atop the bamboo cliff. He sat on the stone platform, listening to the sound of the wind and the groaning of bamboo, while gazing at the horizon where a sea of forest met the distant mountains.
He slowly let out a long sigh as he took out a large scroll from the storage space within the broadcasting orb.
This scroll was the Deathless Legion Summoning Decree. It contained all of the cultivation methods and the know how of this technique.
Wei Chen opened the scroll and began to read, but a sheet of note paper fell out. It carried a familiar handwriting.
Wei Chen picked up the note that had fallen to the ground and read it. It explained the overall system of techniques in this world, serving as the foundation for Wei Chen to learn.
In this world, there are three main categories of techniques besides cultivation methods. If techniques were compared to a game, they would be like abilities that could be learned and trained, growing stronger as their level increased.
In this world, the main categories of techniques are as follows.
Combat techniques. This kind of technique functions as an attack ability and is the primary type most cultivators train for combat. Most are projectile or melee techniques that increase the cultivator’s power output when used. For example, the Underworld Bone Claw.
Defensive techniques are also included under combat techniques because of their nature. Some defensive techniques are difficult to distinguish clearly, such as techniques that absorb elemental attacks and convert the absorbed energy into the user’s spirit qi.
Movement techniques. These techniques are as popular as combat techniques and are mainly used for movement during battle or for escape when all hope is lost. Many of them are life saving techniques, such as those that sacrifice half of the user’s blood essence to destroy the physical body and teleport to another location, allowing escape of both body and soul.
Support techniques. These techniques are less common than the first two categories and are not as popular. This is mainly because most support techniques do not directly increase power output. Many techniques sold in markets or auction houses allow better control of artifacts but do not add anything in terms of raw strength.
Of course, there are rare exceptions such as healing techniques, soul binding techniques, corpse refining techniques, summoning techniques, and draining techniques. All of these niche techniques are also placed under the support category.
Naturally, the Deathless Legion Summoning Decree is categorized as a support technique.
After reading the note, Wei Chen began studying the scroll itself. He slowly closed his eyes and descended into an epiphany.
Within the epiphany, Wei Chen floated in the black river of the underworld. He felt no suffocation and had no difficulty breathing despite being submerged within the river.
The first step of the epiphany was to understand the cycle of the soul. The first thing he needed to know was how souls arrived in the underworld. They came from many places, either from the natural end of their lifespan or from lives cut short before their time.
As he observed, Wei Chen also noticed crystals forming. Green crystals fell from the souls that came with the flow of the black river. These crystals dropped from the souls and settled onto the river floor, the darkest and deepest part of the underworld.
Wei Chen followed the crystals and saw that the river floor looked like a road paved entirely with green crystal.
The vast size of the river was like a sea, and the mountains of crystal on the river floor resembled a sprawling crystal landscape. Countless souls dropped these crystals onto the riverbed, layer after layer, forming an endless expanse of green crystal.
He did not know what these crystals were, but from his senses, the senses of someone who could absorb underworld qi, they told him that these crystals must contain power within them. The larger the crystals were, the greater the power they held.
However, what kind of power it was, he still did not know.
The next scene in Wei Chen’s epiphany brought him to the shore, a place that looked like some kind of fishing village. The people in the village all possessed a strong death qi.
Were they the denizens of the underworld?
Watching them talk, walk, and interact with each other was like watching fishermen on Earth chatting about the weather and where a great catch could be found.
But then, Wei Chen’s gaze shifted to a small boat in the middle of the river. The fishermen lowered objects that looked like buckets made of obsidian into the river.
They were surrounded by many large boats and warriors waiting around the riverbank.
A moment later, the bucket was pulled out of the river, filled with green crystals. In the very next moment, a large monster surged out of the river and quickly attacked the fishermen. The warriors waiting nearby immediately launched their attacks against the monster.
