Chapter 124: Murong Xuanji Trump Card
Rewatching the replay of Wei Chen’s preparations on the screen many times made Youqi notice her daughter’s confusion, but she decided to remain silent, letting little Ningning come up with her own explanation first. She would correct her later if there was anything wrong.
The little one, Ningning, tilted her head as a soft moan of confusion escaped her.
“Hmmmm… I don’t get it…” the child muttered as she scratched her head.
“Huh? Little Ningning, what don’t you understand? Can you tell Fourth Mama?” Youqi asked as she placed down the teacup in her hand.
“Ummmm… I watched this many times, Wei Chen’s preparations. He seems to want to ambush the Murong Clan army, but what I don’t understand is why he had to cut down the trees. If the trees were cut down, wouldn’t it be easier for the enemy to spot him?
“Also, why did he let his people fake their deaths? Why did he act like he just raised the dead? Isn’t that just… stupid?” The little one asked her mother, eager to hear the answer from her all knowing Fourth Mama.
Hearing the question, Youqi could not help but let her lips curl into a bitter smile.
She also did not understand why Wei Chen did this. If it was an ambush, the most logical thing would be to hide one’s forces. Yet Wei Chen had even cleared the trees to create an easily visible clearing and let his deathless legion fake their deaths.
If it was done to lure the Murong Clan closer, then it was somewhat understandable, even though she still thought clearing the trees was a stupid move.
But why did he have to declare “Arise” and let his deathless legion, who had faked their deaths, dramatically stand up again? He had even instructed them to release underworld qi to make it more… dramatic.
Yes, dramatic. That was the exact word she heard when Wei Chen briefed his deathless legion.
Why did it have to be dramatic? She did not understand that either.
Yes, if it was to lure the Murong Clan closer and then ambush them, she could somewhat understand, but that declaration destroyed every meaning of the word ambush.
The moment Wei Chen declared “Arise,” the enemies would immediately be on guard and the ambush would fail. To make it worse, he even instructed his own deathless legion to make the rise dramatic. The time wasted on that dramatic display threw the entire notion of ambush out the window.
This was not an ambush at all. This was a show off.
Then why did this guy show off in front of his enemy? He even made it so that others misunderstood it as some kind of demonic path technique that could raise the dead without earning the ire of heaven, creating even more enemies who would scheme behind his back to get their hands on it.
Why? Why though?
Youqi frowned, her eyes closing as her face tightened while she tried to find a reason.
“Mama… even you don’t know?” the little one asked, her large and curious eyes staring at her knowledgeable Fourth Mama.
Youqi searched hard for an answer until something struck her, deep within her memories of her lord. That memory held the answer to her daughter’s question.
She smiled and gently patted her little one’s head as she softly spoke the answer.
“Because he’s an idiot.”
The little one’s eyes sparkled as she accepted the answer as if it were a universal truth.
“Ooooooh— It’s because he’s an idiot. No wonder~”
Youqi nodded while patting her daughter’s head.
“Yes. As Papa once said, ’Question not the mind of idiots, lest their folly taint your own understanding.’” Youqi quoted her husband. It was not entirely made up. He had said something similar, but she made it sound more elegant.
“I understand!” The little one nodded. “’Question not the mind of idiots, lest their folly taint your own understanding.’ If Papa said it, it must be true!”
The little one nodded repeatedly in understanding before raising her head to ask again.
“Then… if he’s an idiot, isn’t that bad? Wasn’t he supposed to help Papa with his job? Papa also said not to let idiots touch his documents or something like that…”
“It’s because, despite the flaws that cause his idiocy to act up from time to time, he is still making things easier for Papa. Overall, it is better for him to help. Besides, he is not touching any documents,” Youqi explained.
“Ooooh— Then… then how did he do it? Can I do it too? Maybe… maybe if I do it, Papa will have less burden with his job?” the little one asked again.
Seeing her eager daughter, Youqi could not help but brace herself for the long session of questions that was about to follow.
In her mind, she resolved to write this into a report and send it to her husband later. This idiot, Wei Chen dared to make her lose sleep over this… nonsense.
— Meanwhile – Battlefield —
Wei Chen had already retreated far away and dispersed his qi along with the Avatar of Death construct. He was now sitting atop a nearby tree, watching the kaiju fight from a front row seat.
“Hmm… I really need popcorn for this… Next goal, let’s see if this world has corn that can be made into popcorn,” Wei Chen muttered as his thoughts wandered to the savory, buttery taste of popcorn from his previous life.
The fight continued as the two constructs clashed again and again. It was brutal, but the green Asura battle formation was steadily gaining the advantage over the red one.
This was because, in the first few minutes of the battle, Wei Chen had disabled the Murong Clan’s Asura battle construct’s right arm, causing it to lose a significant portion of its power. The people assigned to control that arm had already been killed by Wei Chen.
Furthermore, the deathless legion could never truly die. At most, their materialized bodies would be destroyed, after which they would return to the underworld, re-materialize, and come back again.
As a result, the backlash from the formation being attacked and the constant replenishment of the construct, which continuously drained energy, did not cost them their lives. At most, they would simply draw more underworld qi through Wei Chen.
And who was Wei Chen? He possessed dual black holes in his dantian, and the channel to the underworld that he had established through it was stable and indestructible. Even if the entire legion drew underworld qi through him around the clock, he would not feel any fatigue at all.
As for killing, Wei Chen had already torn up all of his killing licenses before this fight, so he did not need to deal with any point reductions.
He had prepared everything in advance.
The fight dragged on, and the Murong Clan continued to fall into disadvantage again and again. If not for Murong Xuanji personally controlling the core formation, the red Asura battle construct would have already been destroyed.
Murong Xuanji glared hatefully at Wei Chen, who was sitting atop the trees, watching the battle as if it had nothing to do with him.
He then looked down at his own formation and saw his warriors within it dying one by one due to the backlash from the formation and the overdrawing of spiritual qi.
If this continued, he would definitely lose. He needed to do something, something that could turn the tables.
As the punches from the green Asura battle avatar continued to pummel his own construct, Murong Xuanji could no longer wait. The backlash kept ravaging the formation, causing his people to die from qi overdrawing.
If this continued, all of his people would die.
Murong Xuanji gritted his teeth and said, “Rather than waiting for death, your lives should be sacrificed for the chance of Murong Clan victory!”
With those words, Murong Xuanji immediately used his authority as the formation controller to draw power from all of his people.
This technique, which sacrificed the lives and spiritual qi of everyone in the formation except the controller, was a demonic path method used only when there were no other options left.
The power gained would raise the cultivation of the formation controller by an entire realm. However, the cultivation obtained through this method was impure and evil, so the user could only reach a pseudo version of that realm.
The blood-colored qi from the entire formation coalesced into the chest of the red Asura construct. The formation slowly disappeared as the people controlling all the nodes had already died on the spot.
The blood qi that converged at the chest gathered into a crimson orb.
Slowly, the orb began to crack, and then—
Clank!
Murong Xuanji’s body was revealed as the shell of the blood orb shattered. His long hair had turned blood red, and his eyes shone with a bright crimson glow.
His gaze locked onto Wei Chen as if he were already a corpse. There was no trace of fear left, only the confidence brought by the overwhelming power that now resided within those crimson eyes.
