Chapter 139: Mission From The Lord of Death
The nearest assassin quickly retreated as the flames drew closer, but another line of fire burst from the ground, burning both of the assassin’s legs.
“Arrrggghh!”
That unlucky assassin fell to the ground, unable to move as his legs were burned into disintegration.
Seeing a fierce beast attacking them, the other assassins quickly attacked in formation, hoping to kill it and continue their mission.
But they had greatly underestimated the power of the flames from the Heavenly Fire Wolf. This was one of the reasons why the Heavenly Fire Wolf was feared throughout the lower realms. Its fire was fierce and scorching, capable of burning even immaterial entities.
Let alone a group of assassins skilled in spatial movement.
The moment a few assassins vanished, hoping to use their superior movement to strike, a scream was heard.
“Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhh!”
The agonized scream echoed before three charred corpses fell from the air within the flaming area. It was as if even spatial movement could not ignore the fire burning in the area.
They believed that fire in real space could not affect them while moving through space, but they forgot that the flames of the Heavenly Fire Wolf could affect the immaterial.
As a result, it was as though they had passed through a wall of heated plasma. The moment they crossed it, they were burned to a crisp.
When Wei Chen saw the three corpses fall to the ground, he could not help letting out a sigh. His points would surely be deducted. He quickly entered the redeem shop interface to check his points.
His points had returned to more than two million after two months, recovering from the time they had been in the red due to penalties. He checked again and found that no points had been deducted.
Wei Chen frowned and slowly thought about the reason. He remembered that the three unlucky bastards burned to a crisp had tried to cross the area where Max’s flames were raging.
It was like someone trying to walk through a burning zone. Those people could be considered committing suicide or inviting their own death. Maybe this would not be counted as killing.
Wei Chen considered this, but to be sure, he needed to ask Youqi for clarification in this case.
On the assassin side, seeing the Heavenly Fire Wolf, whose cultivation was far stronger than theirs, they exchanged glances before retreating quickly, but—
Bam! Boom!
Two punches sent two of them crashing onto the ground. Wei Chen moved to intercept the assassins because he wanted to know who had sent them.
The other assassins quickly used this opportunity to activate their spatial movement techniques and vanish into the shadows of the night. All of them retreated from Ding Lao’s estate.
Wei Chen walked toward the two assassins whom he had caught alive and handed them over to Yin Lan.
“Can you interrogate them and find out who they are? I still need to make another pizza. The last one was ruined by that damn dog,” Wei Chen said irritably, glaring at Max, who was acting innocent with wide doe eyes as it looked back and forth between Wei Chen and Yin Lan.
“Of course, Lord Son-in-law. We will take care of it.”
Hearing the words “son-in-law,” Wei Chen could not help but twitch his mouth. He supposed he might need some time to get used to that title.
Yin Lan then took the two assassins from him and dragged them to an abandoned courtyard within Ding Lao’s estate. Several members of the Sword Division followed behind her.
Wei Chen shrugged and looked at Max, who was pretending to be a normal dog, huffing and puffing with innocent eyes as if saying, Look, I did what you told me, right? Now give me the reward.
Wei Chen could only shake his head and return to the kitchen. He needed to make another pizza for the Mo family father and daughter, who were waiting in the guest room under Fatty Ding Lao’s reception.
— 30 Minutes later —
Wei Chen had finished making a new pizza to replace the one Max had ruined. He had now sealed Max’s cultivation, so the wolf was almost no different from a large husky, except for its red fur. It was currently being hugged by Mo Xingyao like a giant teddy bear, unable to steal anything anymore.
But before Wei Chen could bring the new pizza out, a beeping sound came from the broadcasting orb connected to his soul, indicating that someone was trying to contact him.
He paused what he was doing and opened the connection screen. It was Youqi.
“Ms. Youqi, is there anything you need?”
“There is. I received a report from the Immigrant Gate that we have two anomalous souls,” Youqi said.
“Anomalous souls? What’s that?” Wei Chen asked.
“It means souls with abnormal traits, whether in the form of a soul that is half dog-headed, a soul filled with excessive death energy, or even souls with strange memories. The category includes but is not limited to those cases,” Youqi explained and continued.
“The two anomalous souls we detected died today, but they contain an excessive amount of death energy, as if they had been dead for hundreds of years. Also, their last memories show that they were cultivating a mysterious technique. Then they appeared here as if they had died from cultivation backlash. But…” Youqi paused and turned toward the monitor in her office to check the information.
“But?” Wei Chen prompted.
“Their cause of death was suicide to protect a secret from their interrogators. The injuries that caused their deaths were the destruction of their hearts and brains through a secret technique they had learned, allowing them to commit suicide even when their cultivation was sealed. Don’t you think that’s strange?”
After hearing Youqi’s explanation, Wei Chen began to piece things together. Two people died to avoid revealing secrets to interrogators. He had captured two assassins. And now Youqi was contacting him.
“Oh… are you saying the two assassins I caught committed suicide, and they can’t remember anything except cultivating a mysterious technique?” Wei Chen clarified.
“Yes. And since you were the one who captured them, I thought you might know something. The strangest part is that their memories claim they were only Qi Refining Realm cultivators, but their actual cultivation before death was at the Nascent Soul Realm. This means whatever they cultivated either sealed their memories or allowed another soul to occupy their bodies. Does that sound familiar?” Youqi asked with a faint smile.
Wei Chen searched his memory and recalled that those bastards who cheated death in the Scam Realm often gave their hosts a cultivation method that allowed easier access and control over the host body.
“The cheated death souls? So that’s why they can’t remember. The other soul was controlling the body while the host soul was in a hibernation-like state,” Wei Chen concluded.
“You want me to investigate these people?” he asked.
“More than that,” Youqi said. “We want you to kill whoever is connected to these cheated death souls, whether they are mortal or cultivator. As long as the soul you send down is even slightly connected to this incident, we will void any penalty. If you send down a cheated death soul connected to this case, we will give you double the points. This is a direct order from the Lord of Death.”
Her tone turned cold. This was blatant disrespect toward the Underworld and her husband. If she were free, she would oversee this matter personally.
“You mean your husband,” Wei Chen said.
“Yes. It is a direct order from my husband. But I am working right now, so I do not address him that way during work hours,” Youqi replied in a professional tone.
“Since it’s a direct order and there’s even double the points involved, he must be pretty pissed, huh?” Wei Chen probed.
“Yes. As an agent of the Underworld at the Half Step Soul Transformation Realm, you could not detect the cheated death soul inside their bodies. That means their cultivation technique can mask the stench of death from an Underworld agent at the same major realm as the host. We need this cultivation method so we can develop a countermeasure,” Youqi explained.
“I see…” Wei Chen nodded. It was like someone had developed stealth technology that could bypass detection systems. Honestly, when he faced those assassins, he had not sensed anything unusual.
“Is that all?” he asked.
“Yes… wait…” Youqi suddenly paused and walked off screen, leaving Wei Chen waiting.
“What do you want, sweetie?” he heard Youqi’s gentle voice from a distance.
“I… I want pizza! A piece of Wei Chen’s pizza!” a familiar jubilant girl’s voice echoed through the connection.
“Fine… but you need to brush your teeth, alright?”
After speaking with the little one, Youqi returned to the screen.
“Can you give me three pieces of pizza?”
Wei Chen chuckled. He took three slices from the newly made pizza and sent them into the broadcasting orb’s space.
A moment later, they reappeared on Youqi’s side. She held one slice in her hand, while placing the other two onto a nearby plate.
“Thanks…” she said with a gentle smile before cutting the connection.
“Wait…” Wei Chen paused, staring at the pizza tray that had clearly not been visible on her screen before. “How did they know I made pizza?” he muttered to himself.
