How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World - Chapter 140: Life Devouring Hall

Chapter 140: Life Devouring Hall
Wei Chen walked into the courtyard where Ding Lao lived, carrying a tray of pizza. Inside the room, he saw only Mo Xingyao waiting, along with Ah Hu, who was standing at the side as if he were a peasant awaiting a decree.
“Where’s your dad?” Wei Chen asked as he placed the pizza tray he was carrying in front of her.
“He went to interrogate those two assassins you caught,” Mo Xingyao replied as she took a piece of pizza. She noticed that three pieces were missing.
“Huh? You’ve eaten three pieces? Didn’t you say you would leave the entire tray for me?”
Wei Chen unconsciously averted his eyes from Mo Xingyao. “Yeah… I couldn’t help myself.”
Mo Xingyao looked at Wei Chen. She knew that he was lying to her, but she did not mind.
“Hmmm? If you wanted to keep some for that Butterfly, I don’t mind, you know? You should have already guessed that we have come to an agreement.” She said while pulling him to sit down opposite her.
The table was not big. It was just a common wooden table of modest size. The wood used to make it was simple elm wood that one could easily find just outside the city.
The size of the table made it easy for the two sitting opposite each other to hold hands. Wei Chen’s heart beat a little faster as he looked at Mo Xingyao with a blushing face while she still held his hand.
If Wei Chen felt his heart beating faster, then Mo Xingyao, who was not even officially in a relationship, felt her face burning as her heart pounded wildly.
“Say… Yaoyao. Can I ask you something?” Wei Chen began, pushing the tray of pizza aside and looking straight into Mo Xingyao’s eyes as if trying to pry the truth out of her.
“Hm? What… what do you want to ask?” she stuttered. Her face was red like a tomato as she tried to avert her gaze from him.
“Are we still pretending to be a couple? Or have you already fallen for my charm and want us to be a couple for real?” Wei Chen said with his signature smirk.
Mo Xingyao’s face turned even redder as she averted her eyes. “Who… who would want to…”
Before she could finish her answer, Wei Chen gently cut her off.
“Are you still going to play tsundere even now?”
“Huh? What’s tsundere?” she asked, quickly grabbing onto the chance to ease her nervousness.
“It means everything you say is the opposite of what your heart feels, especially in terms of love. That’s tsundere. Do I need to interpret everything you say about us that way?” Wei Chen asked directly.
After hearing the definition of the new word “tsundere,” Mo Xingyao’s blushing face twisted with embarrassment and fake anger.
“Who… who is tsundere? You’re tsundere! Your whole family is tsundere!” Mo Xingyao defended herself.
“If you’re not tsundere, then tell me. Are you serious about our relationship? Or was all of this just a farce that has gone too far?” Wei Chen asked gently, but his eyes and gestures showed that he was serious this time, not the usual goofy Wei Chen who always went along with her lead.
Mo Xingyao pressed her lips together. Her heart was beating wildly. In truth, she had not thought too deeply about it herself. She just knew that whenever she was with this goofy vagabond, he always made her smile, and she did not feel any pressure at all.
She did not need to act like a proper lady or the daughter of the all powerful chairman of the Thousand Treasure Pavilion. Besides, this guy was very good at cooking and always came up with strange dishes. She was never bored when she stayed with him.
She did not think their relationship was deep enough to be called love, but she was comfortable, very comfortable staying with him. She could be herself without needing to pretend.
Was that love? She did not know.
“Why…” Mo Xingyao began, her voice trembling. “Why are you trying to make me say it? Are you so dumb that you can’t tell?” She looked directly into his eyes.
“Yes, I’m dumb…” His answer made Mo Xingyao huff. This guy was talking nonsense again. “But…” he continued.
“I’m not that dumb, Yaoyao. I can sense it. But I want you to say it, so I don’t have to keep guessing anymore.”
“Why?” she asked, her eyes searching deeply into his for an answer.
Wei Chen placed both his hands over hers and gently lifted them.
Then he gently kissed the back of her hand.
That single move blew away all the questions, answers, and huffing acts Mo Xingyao had prepared in her mind. Her brain felt as if it had gone into hard reset mode.
“It’s about commitment.” Wei Chen’s gentle voice and solemn expression made Mo Xingyao feel as if her heart was about to burst.
“Schlop schlop… munch munch… GRrrrr… nom nom nom… smack smack.”
The sound of someone voraciously eating broke into the moment. Wei Chen looked toward the source and saw the culprit.
It was Max, voraciously devouring the pizza on the tray.
More than that, he saw Ding Lao covering his mouth with his hand as if watching a spicy show, and Ah Hu standing in the background like a prop.
Mo Xingyao quickly pulled her hand away and ran out of the courtyard, leaving Wei Chen stunned.
He wanted to follow her, but at that moment Mo Jue and Yin Lan entered the courtyard.
Yin Lan, true to her commitment to duty, quickly followed Mo Xingyao out to protect her young miss.
Mo Jue, on the other hand, was confused. He had just seen his daughter run away with her face red like a tomato.
He looked at Wei Chen. He wanted to ask what had happened, but after a second thought, he decided to ignore it. This was something a couple needed to resolve on their own.
He then got straight to the point. “Those two assassins you caught are already dead. They committed suicide. Typical of those from the Life Devouring Hall.”
“Huh? You know about them, Father-in-law?” Wei Chen asked.
“Yes. I recognized their technique.” Mo Jue nodded. “Even with their cultivation sealed, they were still able to commit suicide by using the spiritual qi outside their dantian to destroy both their brain and heart. That is something only the Life Devouring Hall can do.”
Wei Chen thought about the information Youqi had given him. It matched what Mo Jue had just said.
“Then, Father-in-law, do you know where they are?” he asked.
Mo Jue shook his head. “I do not know their exact location. Assassin sects like that never let their headquarters be known. It is far too risky. I only know that they are somewhere within our territory, namely the western desert, about five hundred thousand kilometers west of here.”
Wei Chen’s mouth twitched. For a world nearly as large as a solar system, he did not think he could easily find them in that vast desert. He did not even know whether they were hiding underground or inside some kind of illusion array.
“I see…” Wei Chen let out a tired sigh. Maybe this mission was not as easy as he had thought.
“Do you perhaps have a grudge with them?” Mo Jue asked curiously.
“A grudge? No. But deep irritation? Yes.” Wei Chen smirked.
He did not lie. He had never had a personal grudge with them before. Between him and them, it had only been a job and his assigned target.
But unknown to him, what he said made Mo Jue nod in approval. The assassins from the Life Devouring Hall were a ruthless sect that would always complete their mission by any means necessary or die trying.
The Life Devouring Hall had been founded less than two hundred years ago, but they were extremely active, and each of their assassins was fiercely loyal to the sect. It had taken Mo Jue fifty years just to uncover the name of their sect, and another hundred years to learn even the vague location of their base.
This sect had no qualms about attacking innocents. Wei Chen’s deep irritation toward them was understandable. If Mo Jue had known their exact location, he would have already brought a new warship and all four divisions of his sect to annihilate them.
Wei Chen cupped his fist and took his leave. He wanted to contact Youqi and inform her about the current situation so they could come up with a plan.
But before he could walk out, Ah Hu stopped him.
“Err… Lord Wei…” Ah Hu stuttered nervously. Then he took out the Money Exchange Note that Wei Chen had given him and handed it back to him.
“What’s this? Didn’t I say I would buy that guy’s debt? Why are you giving it back to me?” Wei Chen asked.
