Chapter 152: The Hidden Ancient Sect Young Master?
Amidst the chaos, slaughter, and confusion in the western desert, there was a peaceful corner of it. If…
If the distant sounds of explosions and clashing blades beneath the red night sky, with burning outposts in the distance like warm bonfires from some festival, could be called peaceful,
then yes… this place was peaceful.
Under the cover of night, a large white tent had been erected. Inside the tent, many cozy rugs and cloth cushions were arranged on elevated platforms, serving as both sleeping and sitting areas.
There was also a portable cooking stove inside, and it seemed to have been used recently. In the middle of the tent, two figures sat at a table, one small and one large.
It was Wei Chen and the little troublemaker Ningning. On the table was a small bowl of French fries. The two were playing a game of Uno, and the cards had, of course, been drawn by Wei Chen himself.
While the large one and the small one stared at each other, trying to guess the cards in the other’s hand, little Ningning spoke.
“By the way… why are these fried potatoes called French fries? Was French somebody you hated so much that you wanted to fry them? Just like youtiao?” the little girl asked.
(Author Note: Youtiao, the popular Chinese fried dough stick, traces its legendary origin to the Southern Song Dynasty (12th century).
According to Chinese folklore, outraged citizens created it as a symbolic protest against the corrupt chancellor Qin Hui (also known as Qin Kuai) and his wife, who were blamed for framing and causing the execution of the revered patriotic general Yue Fei.
A street vendor shaped dough into two joined pieces representing the treacherous couple, then deep-fried them in boiling oil, symbolizing their punishment in hell, while calling it “oil-fried Hui” (油炸檜, yóu zhá huì) or similar terms like “oil-fried ghosts/devils”.
Over time, this evolved into the modern paired, twisted youtiao enjoyed as a breakfast.)
Hearing this, Wei Chen smirked. “Even though there is a joke about them inventing perfume because they hate water, personality wise I think there are a lot of decent folks there, just like any other place.”
“Huh? Are they a country or a faction?” the little girl asked.
“They are people from my old home. It has been a long time… anyhow, it is just a name. I did not invent this dish, so I simply kept the name,” Wei Chen said as he fell into deep melancholy.
“Oh… You draw ten!” The little girl revealed a Draw Ten card with a smirk.
Wei Chen did not say anything. He calmly showed her a Reverse card.
“You! You cheat! You cheat! This is the second time already!” The little girl threw a tantrum and tossed her cards into the air.
Wei Chen still said nothing. He simply wore his ’signature look of superiority’.
“Gaaaah! I… I hate that look on your face! I…. I will fight you!” The little girl attacked Wei Chen with her short leg, but he quickly deflected it with a light slap, his ’signature look of superiority’ still firmly on his face, which only angered the girl even more.
The rowdy duo fought for a while before the little girl grew tired. Huffing, she sat down and started eating French fries as if there were no tomorrow.
At that moment, a graceful figure entered the tent. It was Yan Rongjun, the wild and well-endowed beauty.
The moment she saw the little girl, she rushed forward and hugged her tightly.
“Little Ningning! Waaaah! I thought I lost you!” Yan Rongjun bawled her eyes out without caring that Wei Chen, an outsider, was present.
“Ma… Mama, Second Mamaaa!” As if it were contagious, the little troublemaker also burst into tears.
Seeing this, Wei Chen decided to give them space. He walked out of the tent, leaving the two to spend some quality time together.
Wei Chen sat outside on a nearby rock. Beside him, Max lay on the ground, munching on a large honey-glazed drumstick from a fierce beast. It was, of course, cooked by Wei Chen. Otherwise, this gourmet-tongued dog would not have enjoyed it so much.
Wei Chen watched the stars, waiting for the mother and daughter to finish catching up.
After about twenty minutes, Yan Rongjun walked out of the tent, holding the little troublemaker Ningning in her arms.
“Thank you very much, Agent Wei, for rescuing little Ningning.” She then looked at her daughter, her eyes gentle and full of love. “If I were to lose her, I would not have the face to meet my husband.”
“It is all right, Second Madam. It is my duty to help,” Wei Chen replied with a standard answer. He was not familiar enough with her to joke around.
“Thank you again.” Yan Rongjun nodded.
Then she and little Ningning were covered by a shining white light. In the next moment, both of them vanished. They had been teleported back to the underworld.
Wei Chen watched with a smile. The two had already returned.
But somehow…
He felt like he had forgotten something. Wei Chen tried to recall what it was that he had forgotten, but in the end, he dismissed it.
Nah. If it were something important, he would have remembered it by now.
So he shrugged and pushed the gnawing feeling to the back of his mind.
— Meanwhile – Underworld —
Little Ningning had returned to the palace. She met her Fourth Mama, who had been devastated by her disappearance.
“F… Fourth Mama….” The little girl was afraid she would be spanked.
“Qiqi, please, this time do not scold her. She is…” Yan Rongjun tried to mediate. Youqi’s strictness toward little Ningning was well known. Even though she knew that Youqi loved little Ningning like her own blood, she was still the strictest among the four of them.
Without saying anything, Youqi lowered herself to the same height as little Ningning and immediately pulled her into a hug.
She did not say a word. She simply held her one and only daughter. Although not related by blood, she loved her deeply.
“Thank goodness you are safe….” Youqi muttered under her breath. The trembling in her voice reached the little troublemaker’s ears, causing her to cry once again.
Yan Rongjun smiled. It was good that her Fourth Sister had not scolded her beloved daughter.
…
After Youqi had let out her emotions, she gradually calmed down. Now she was ready to return to work.
That night, she let little Ningning sleep with her Second Sister, as she still had many documents and forms to inspect and approve. Since her husband was not present, most of the office work and approval forms had to be processed by her.
In her room, which also served as her bedroom, she checked a stack of files that had been sent by Wei Chen. She wondered what was inside. What had Wei Chen sent to her? What request did he have?
“Hmmm… a request for assistance with tools to search a vast area? He wants to search for the Life Devouring Hall?” she muttered to herself. “This should not be a problem, since Second Sister and her forces have already annihilated their sect.”
She slowly continued reviewing the remaining contents until her eyes fell upon the last page. There was an added paragraph.
“Little Ningning, your daughter, has come to the mortal realm to eat pizza and does not want to go back. Please come and bring her back soon.”
“Huh?”
Suspicion began to gnaw at Youqi. Finally, she used her authority to access the secret records that the broadcasting orb had captured.
Thus, the secret was no longer a secret.
“Ohhh? Interesting,” Youqi uttered with a cold smile, her hand itching to spank someone’s butt.
— Morning – Thousand Treasure City —
Mo Jue was still staying in the city to investigate the one who had tried to seize the treasure land that was Fatty Ding Lao’s ancestral home.
In the study, Mo Jue was looking over some of the information that the Hidden Cloud Division had brought to him. At that moment, his U Phone rang.
Mo Jue checked the caller ID and picked up the call. It was from the Hidden Cloud Division.
“Yes? What is the news about those assassins? Has Wei Chen found them?” he asked.
On the other side, a group of Hidden Cloud Division members stood among the ruins of the Life Devouring Hall. Some of the outposts were still burning.
“My lord… the Life Devouring Hall has been annihilated.”
The report from the Hidden Cloud Division personnel made Mo Jue’s ears perk up. He was in disbelief. The Life Devouring Hall had operated in the shadows for more than a century. How could they have been annihilated?
“Who destroyed them?” he asked, his eyes turning sharp. If this were true, it meant that a powerful faction had been meddling in his territory. And this faction had accomplished what he had failed to do for centuries, without him detecting anything until it was already finished.
“We suspect that it was the force under Lord Wei, my lord,” the Hidden Cloud Division personnel replied.
“What? That is impossible. He was just a vagabond!” Mo Jue retorted.
“But we only have his word that he was a vagabond, my lord. From all the clues we have gathered, the Life Devouring Hall was annihilated cleanly. None escaped. We suspect that Lord Son in Law Wei may be a young master of some Hidden Ancient Sect or clan,” the Hidden Cloud Division personnel report.
